Picked up a VSX-84TXSi today - Page 6

Let me make sure I understand what has been said.

On the 84TXSi there is no zoom function available for any HDMI input at any resolution.

If I want to zoom an HDTivo output with 4 sided letter box or a non-anamorphic wide screen DVD using the 84TXSi, I have the video be coming through an analog input of some type (component, S-video, etc.).

Is all that correct?

I haven't tested it, but I'd bet that is true. "Zoom" is not even listed as an AV Parameter on the display for HDMI sources. If no one else confirms it first, I'll check it tonight with my cable STB connected via component.

I guess we shouldn't expect the video processing of a $1.5k receiver to be on a level with separate video processors costing twice as much

I haven't tried it yet but does anybody know if you can use different resolution options for different inputs or are the scaling options global?

Way to pin it down! Nice post.

I think I can live with the lack of down conversion. The only scenarios I can think of where that might be needed by anyone are pretty contrived (say you had a tv with a 720 native resolution and a source putting out 1080i - what are the odds the source couldn't just give you the 720 you want to start with). In our 1080 world now, most devices either do or will support that resolution, so the scaler should become less and less of an issue over time.

I concur with Monty's findings. The AV Parameter options are considerably less on the HDMI inputs. The one component hook up I have does have the "zoom" parameter as an option.

Yes, as far as I can tell the AV Parameters including resolution are set on a per input basis.

True, but a guy can hope. I fully expected more out of this receiver but in retrospect you're right.

Yes that is correct. The Zoom function is not available while connected via HDMI and is only enabled on analog connections. I didn't specifically test with s-video or composite, but I imagine it work with those inputs too.

With 1080i and 720p it comes down to what's the better de-interlacer, the source, the receiver, or the display. The chip in the receiver is capable of some pretty darn good de-interlacing.

...but ultimately you're right. The lack of down conversion is of little importance.

I had some time to play with the 84, and I'm quite impressed overall. However, I had a couple of problems. I actually find the deinterlacing capabilities of this receiver to be quite poor. When deinterlacing and upscaling 480i Gamecube and PS2 games to either 480p or 720p, there is a tremendous amount of artifacts, much more than usual. When I scale to 1080i and let the display handle the deinterlacing, things are much better. Another issue that I have and has been mentioned by forum member sage with his 82, is that quickly raising the volume of HD-DVD movies in a PCM stream can, not always, lead to significant hissing noise. This was pretty much only a problem under the specific circumstance of quickly raising the volume in two situations. All in all, I'm impressed with this receiver's capabilities. It was easy to correctly setup and the sound quality is excellent.

So, I see a few entries about the quality of the video processor.

In order to use the scaler on the 84TXSi for non-anamorphic wide screen DVDs, I need to use componnent analog inputs. This means I'm not going to be using the scaler on my 79AVi. How does the video processing on the 84TXSi compare to the 79AVi?

Pretty much the same question for the HDTivo. Which has the best video processor to output 720p, the 84TXSi or the HDTivo?

Any help here would be appretiated...
This is what I am thinking;

Samsung HLS-7178w
Pioneer Elite VSX-84-TXSi
HD-DVR HR10-250
Toshiba HD-DVD HDA1
Running Polk Speakers set up for 7.1 surround.

I wouldlike to run all HDMI cables??
Is this possible with this set up??
How would you set it up??

Thanks in advance.

So I have a projector (with DCDi) hat can't do 480i and the single connection from that projector to the media closet is HDMI (fiber). Am I screwed if I go with 84Txsi?

What aboue OSD in 84TXSi? Is it 480p? If not, that's a real turn-off for someone with projector that can't do 480i in HDMI and another fishing 50' cable for 480i isn't an option. Adding another TV just for OSD in the media room with projector screen isn't an option either

Buying scaler like VP20 just to cover OSD isn't an option either.

OSD must be 480p because my display won't do 480i either but the OSD from the 84 via HDMI comes in fine.

I just picked up my VSX-84TXSi today...and so far so good.

I am running into a brick wall in regards to video.

I have connected my 65" Mitu Rear Projection TV to the Component Out (no dvi on tv) to the Component inputs on the tv.

I have gone into the AV menu and selected 1080i as the out put resolution. I have plugged in my DVD player via component and all I can get my TV to display (according to the OSD) is 480P!!

What am I doing wrong????? I have also tried to get the AVR to upconvert to 720P and my TV still shows 480I!!!

I have tried moving the other video adjustment from THROUGH to 4:3 and still no luck.

Any ideas? I was told this AVR would upscale both component and HDMI...was I misled?

KidSquid, I believe that the Pioneers only upconvert composite, S-Video and component video sources through the HDMI output. I haven't tried it with the component video out, but I thought that's what I heard. This makes sense because the upconverted resolution selection disappears when disabling video conversion/transcoding, which I believe is a feature only given to the HDMI output.

An update to my workings with the receiver: The deinterlacer for some reason looks to produce something akin to chroma upsampling error produced by some DVD players. Has anyone else noticed this? It's particularly noticeable on certain red colors. The receiver definitely handles some sources or games much better than others. Some of my 480i games look bad when deinterlaced and scaled to 720p, yet some other 480i games look similar to when I had a DVDO scaler/processor connected to the consoles.

For all that care, I have the discrete IR codes for the 84TXSi for the Pronto series remotes. I would consider what I have the difference file, as you can get the rest of the codes directly from Pioneer on the 74TXVi.

Here are the codes not in that file, and work with the 84...

Here are the codes not in that file, and work with the 84...

Just now need to translate all those to my JP1 remote. Actually that's the project I'm working on right now. Reprogramming my JP1 remote to handle the new 84.

So does anyone know where I can get a definitive answer on what inputs this receiver upconverts?

I'm really going to be frustrated if the scaler works on HDMI but not component.

Here's the deal. It looks as if only composite and S-Video sources can be upconverted when using component video out, much like how HDMI sources for the most part cannot be upconverted when using HDMI out. Therefore, your component video sources are just passed through.

The scaler works on component. You can take a 480p or 720p input an upscale it to 1080i, and it does make a noticeable difference.

If you're talking about "upconverting" (transcoding) composite, s-video, or component to HDMI, it does that too.

Wait a min. I thought 480i will come out as 480i via HDMI no matter how you configure it. Or this only applies to 480i HDMI input. How did you get 480i deinterlaced/scaled to 720p?

480i via component will upscale to 480p, 720p, 1080i on the HDMI output. The chart that Monty posted is only for signals input via HDMI and output via HDMI.

Question, looking into getting the 84TSI, but currently have the Denon 2807, not all that happy with it, menu is a tad confusing and I don't think the sound quality is as good as my older 525 HK I sold a few months ago. How is the sound quality with this unit, will be using some nice Amps with it also. Thanks,,

For what it's worth, I prefer the SQ of my 84 to the 4306 it replaced.
Probably because I prefer MCACC room EQ over Audyssey.

DreamCatcher: Thanks for the info, my problem is no matter how I tweek the Denon my Center channel sounds flat. It never has before, and I took another receiver out of another room, smaller HK unit and it sounded fine again. So I might be replacing this unit sooner than later. I did use the Audyssey to calibrate but it didn't do much.

You might try turning Audyssey off, if you haven't already or use the Front mode.
I found the 4306 sounded better with Audyssey defeated
I think Audioholics came to the same conclusion during their review of the 4306.

RE: Anyone else found any other differences?

Yes, the Digital to Analog converter is different. I think. The 72 and 74 use a Burr Brown DAC. The new 82 and 84 just use an unnamed brand DAC. I haven't bought one yet. I would like to go ahead with an 84, but would like to try to find out first if there may have been a compromise in audio quality due to the change in DACs. Burr Brown has been a gold standard for a long time in the DAC field. Pioneer doesn't say much about their new DAC. So with all the added features in the new receivers (the Faroudja scaler and so-on) is the DAC change a cost cutting move to compensate so they can still sell em for the same price? Anybody have any comments on this?

Good Question...........
I've actually done a few comparsions,
1 - SqueezeBox via analog (BurrBrown DACs), via digital (84s DACs)
No Preference
2 - 79AVi via analog 2/ch (stereo direct mode on 84), 79AVi via iLink (stereo direct mode on 84)
Preferred iLink SQ slightly

So whatever Pioneer is using for DACs in the 84, sounds good to me.

Oh one more thing,

The 84 will be released (according to Pioneer via email) in the gorgeous silver finish shortly,
for those with a silver finish preference.
