What's Better? NEC 50XR5 vs. Panny 50PHD8UK?

Hi,

I live in an area where I can see either the NEC 50XR5 or Panny 50PHD8UK. So I'm going to just take the plunge and order one via one of the recommended e-tailers.

Before I do, I was hoping to get some feedback on which panel everyone thought was best. Any feedback you might have would be appreciated!

As someone who has actually owned BOTH sets, my personal perference is for the 8UK overall. However, the video processor on the XR5 may be better and some may prefer it for colorful HD content over the 8UK.

The reasons I feel the 8UK is better is:

1. No image retention
2. very accurate colors
3. Superb blacks
4. Superb details in dark areas (especially for movies)
5. The optional hdmi board is excellent (I am using it with my HD DVD player with zero synch problems)
6. Excellent aesthetics (IMHO)
7. Price-performance

The reasons I feel the XR5 may be better:

1. Includes hdmi inputs
2. Bright colors
3. Superior warranty
4. Better inbuilt processor for 480i

Panny's connectivity sucks.

Extra $$ for blades !!

True. But those boards rock! Plus, it makes your display future proof. The 8 series hdmi board on my 8UK synchs with my HD DVD player like a champ :D

The Panny 8UK is the best plasma I have owned - or experienced yet :D

Anyway, the XR5 has better connectivity options out of the box.

You think those NEC inputs come free? :rolleyes: The NEC blades are built-in, non-configurable, and paid for up front -- even if you don't need them.

Thanks for all of the bulleted details Plazman. Very helpful.

One of the concerns I have is how standard def (480i?) looks on the big screen. I'll have lots of hi-def channels, but the reality is standard def and DVD are going to be the most popular things watched on whatever I decide upon for some time. That could make me lean towards the NEC in this case.

Powerbuy offered by a forum vendor for NEC is also quite compelling. But price along is not the most important factor, of course. Living with and enjoying a fine piece of equipment is! :-)
