Who cares of these companies use other speaker manufacture drives...do yourself a favor and go to madisound.com and buy one of those Scan Speak kits and you can call them what ever you want. You will have one of the best speaker systems made. Look at Willson Audio...over $100,000 speakers and they uses Scan Speak drivers. And many many other manufactures use Scan Speak, Seas, Eton, Hi-Vi drivers......and they are among the most expensive speakers in the world.

I'm sorry ... but i had the europa max and the other speakers in their lineup in mind. The europas are great ... i had them for over a year before giving in to audiophilia nervosa.

For smaller companies, they simply don't manufacture enough speakers to afford to make their own drivers. How many pairs of any Wilson model do they make in a year? Yeah, they're going to buy all the manufacturing gear to make 8 dozen pair.

For what Wilson charges, they should be making their own drivers but it's much better business sense to buy outsourced drivers, slap'em in double-secret X cabinets with a shiny finish and jack the living sh!t out of the price.

I've heard from a high-end retailer that some linn speakers need proper room tempeture. I this true or just a bluff to make the speaker more "interesting"

That I know:

Crystal acoustic: THX speakers
Pioneer: EX series
yamaha : high performance NS series
Acoustic Research: Phantom series

The "good" speakers statement is based on reviews and audition with reference speakers like JBL, Definitives,B&W, Polk,Klipsch,infinity....and so on

Active speakers/monitors are often overlooked:

ATC
Genelec
Mackie
(DIY) Linkwitzlab designs

...and many more...

Funny ... but i wudn't dismiss it off hand.

The dealer that I went to look at SlimDevices SB-3 told me that Linn speakers' sound gets affected if there are other speakers in the room. Even if those speakers are not plugged in/turned on. Apparently linn can make the other speaker's woofer move in-turn coloring the sound it produces

The dealer said all of the above with a straight face ... even after i started howling!

Linn makes a big deal about single-speaker dem rooms but the truth is that all speakers are resonant devices. Thus, the presence of any in the room will affect the performance of the one under demo. Is this significant? Dunno but when I have an extra pair of speakers in the room, I always short their input terminals to minimize the effect.

So, keep a straight face.

Kal,
That may be true on paper ... but to expect the silent woofers to resonate and color the sound while Linn speakers are playing at normal volumes is kinda far stretched. I am a skeptic by nature ... so to swallow something like that takes a whole of effort on my part.

Has anyone done any testing to see if these claims are valid?

Castle becasue not many people have actually heard them, and Magnapan, becasue even though they get lots of steller reviews etc, not many people actually buy them.

Yeah, I also like to remove myself from the room while listening to music or watching a movie because that spare tire around my belly resonates and colors the bass. Oh and my eardrums also resonate to the sound and impact the performance of the speaker.

Just kidding. You guys are too serious about this stuff!

Tell you what. All you have to do is to put your hand on the woofer cone of an unconnected speaker while another set is wailing and you will find out if it makes a difference. It may not in some cases but the acoustics of an unshorted driver in a box is not that different from that of resonant traps used for acoustic treatments. YMMV.

LMAO! Agreed; Wilson is a joke! Even if they did sound good (which they don't), I can't believe people pay for that crap!

I ONCE HAD A CUSTOMER WHO CAME IN WITH HIS "EXPERT" FRIEND . I don't remeber what specifically I had told him but his friend started laughing at me and they left. Days later the customer came back and apologized for his friend , and explained that they had discovered I was right. Three months and $42,000 later he has a great system, and his friend actually bought a smaller system from me too.

Kal,

How do you short the terminals?

FINALLY, someone on here who has actually heard these speakers!!! I feel like I'm just suggesting them in vain cause nobody ever responds when I throw them out there, lol.

As you pointed out, these are some serious speakers.....IMO, one of the best speakers that nobody has ever heard of. Well, nobody outside of the audio shows, that is, cause people who have heard them at the shows are the ones who end up raving about them.

I can promise you you're making a great decision to go with the Super 8s.....that's the model I own and I've been in audio Heaven since deciding on them. I absolutely LOVE Maggies....I honestly thought I'd own them for the forseeable future, but I wanted to do my due diligence before settling on the larger ones. I listened to speaker after speaker - GOOD stuff - and kept coming back to the Maggies. When I heard the DeVores, it was all over.....they were exactly what I wanted. These things do it all, IMO.....they are very well-balanced tonally, they have a nice transparency about them, they are pretty easy to place, they are relatively small in size, and they are great for both HT and music.

You have excellent taste in speakers, my friend
