You can use database entries for the HL-Sxx88 sets for sure. Probably you can use any 1080p HLS model to get the right commands.

Unfortunately, there aren't any HL-Sxx88 tvs in the URC database. The only HL-S sets are HL-S5087W, S5687W, and S6187W. There is an option for "Discrete Functions 2006" so I'm hoping those will work.

Meanwhile, I'll repeat my request. If anyone has a CCF (Pronto) file with working discrete codes, I would appreciate it if you could email me the file (cwhite@msu.edu).

One of them should work. In fact, they should be identical, but in reality they may not be due to errors in the database.

If you ask in the main "87"/"88" owner's thread, I'm sure you can find out which one is the most accurate.

The only report so far is that the firmware change started with December builds.

Well, since I've just got mine, and everything seems to be working fine, guess I won't miss something I don't know about

Well, today I made the purchase! Bought the 7178 through Magnolia, and it will be delivered next Saturday morning! I can't wait!

Since my old non-HD 4:3 53" died on us 2 weeks ago, we have been using a 27" in the living room. The room is about 18" by 20", so in a room this size the 27" looks incredibly small. Especially considering it is sitting on a small stand inside a 75" wide media niche in that room. So, looking forward to the upgrade in size, but more importantly, that awesome video quality and HD (which up until now, has only existed in the media room up-stairs).

I got the 4 year service plan too, which covered 1 bulb. With the amount of TV time in the living room, we are sure to blow through a bulb in that 4 year period.

I'm going to use the Samsung stand until a better wooden stand can be found. I have the DirecTV HR20 ready to go, along with an HD antenna mounted to the roof. I also have a monster power center ready to go. Will get another X360 and HD-DVD add-on in time. I'm afraid the TV might arrive before the cables I ordered...oh well.

Anyhow, I'm excited, and will continue to watch this link for tips and tricks, thanks for all those you all have already provided!

So, I'll report back when it arrives!

Congrats, cip4465. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Have fun putting that stand together!
interesting thing is, the stand is unavailable regionally through Magnolia. Because I didn't want to deal with getting through some interent dealer, I decided to buy their floor model. It looked perfectly fine, and because its really a temporary thing, I figured it wouldn't be much of an issue. Plus, they gave me 10% off.

So, the stand will already be assembled! One less thing to deal with I guess! Can't wait for the new TV! Until then, I'll enjoy reading this thread and picking up tips and tricks.

I have been reading these post for a long time and it has convinced me to buy the Samsung over the 70 XBR2. This is replacing a Toshiba 62" 1080i set and I really upgraded for the 1080p functions on my PS3. I have 2 questions that I am sure are here somewhere but were unable to find.
1. Is there a way for the Samsung to do a passthrough 5.1 as apposed to just passing 2 Channel infromation from my HD sources.
2. Is there a setting that I am missing? We were playing a game last night and I am getting "screen door" affect on alot of the detail sceens that I did not have with my toshiba. Or is this something that will improve over time with "burn in"?

One more thing just to confirm does this set "upconvert" all inputs to the 1920x1080? When I press the info button it only is shown 1280x720.

Thank you to everyone how takes time to post to these fourms have been a great help to me!

At this time, no TV will do that.

Maybe you are seeing something else. Screen Door Effect (SDE) is not an issue with any 1080p DLP sets.

The "info" button reports the resolution of the input. All microdisplays are fixed and can display only one "native" resolution. Therefore all inputs are converted to the sets "native" resolution before they are displayed. In your case that is 1920x1080 or 1080p.

"Maybe you are seeing something else. Screen Door Effect (SDE) is not an issue with any 1080p DLP sets."

You may be right I just never noticed the SDE before and only reason I thought it may be that on the guys I was with said "that funny on this new TV it looks like you are looking the a screen door at some spots." and he knows nothing about any of this stuff.

We sit around and drink beer and play Tiger Woods Golf on the PS3 for something to do on the weekends after the kids go to bed and that is were it is really noticed. On my Thosiba it was really clear and detialed now looks like you are looking through a screen door and it is distored.

I will play aound with the setting once I get more hours on the set.

Thanks for you help.

Try describing exactly what you are seeing and under what conditions. That's the best way to get help here at AVS.

I have a question regarding the TR-71B stand. Does someone know the weight limitations of the shelves? I have not been able to find any literature in that regard.....and also someone with one......what is the clearance of the shelves....I believe the top one is 7 inches high.....how about the bottom....thanks
post #1034 of 1718
Just wanted to say, received my 7178 this evening, got the stand set up ( had missing bolts ) a quick trip to the local Depot, set up all my equipment and throughly enjoyed tonights episode of HD 24. All I can say is WOW. This monitor looks so amazing I'm speechless. Used Eliab's recommended starting settings and the set looks incredible. After a proper break in and the ultimate purchase of a HD Player/ Blu Ray ( not sure yet which one ) I'll be getting a proper calibration done... Surely one of the best purchases I have ever made....
Glad you're all set up, Bobcel. It is an amazing picture. Just saw your question on the stand. Obviously, you can check the measurements now. Regarding weight, I do know the Yamaha Soundbar I've got on the bottome shelf weighs in at about 40 lbs ... then the top shelf is holding the 360, PS3, and a DVD player.

Regarding weight

I have a Energy AC300 on the bottom shelf with a receiver and Preamp....I was worried about t he weight so I put a peice of styrofoam under the glass below the center channel, no bowing of the glass at all now.... I checked out the service menu for turning off overscan ( found that ) but did not proceed as I could not locate the vert and horz adjustment.... scary place, so many adjustments to screw up! I definately want to turn that off so I'll investigate further... If anyone has specific info on the 7178 please let me know......thanks. Lovin this TV.....

Hey again.
I have yet another question to throw out. I tried to remove the base from my 7178 before I placed it on the stand. There were 4 screws on the rear portion of the base and two flanges that bend inward on the bottom ( I suppose to release the base ). I had two people support the TV on a pair of step stools while I went below to try this. After removing the screws I pressed in the "flanges" but I could not slide the base forward or backwards. Anyone remove their base?, sure would set more secure on the stand without it... Being in CA... and not having a "shaker" for quite a while makes me nervous! Thanks for any info in advance....

"The Bottom has a base that can be removed so the TV is lays flat. As someone posted earlier, you remove two screws in the back and press down on the two tabs. While the tabs are held down, pull the base to the rear and it will slide off."

Hello all - I had my 7178 calibrated by Eliab a few months ago - spectacular reults. Beginning a couple weeks ago, the pic quality has really deteriorated. At best, it looks like it did OTB. has anyone had this happen where the pic quickly went down the crapper? It resembles "torch mode".

Was it a sudden onset or a gradual deterioration? Perhaps your calibration settings (SM) got reverted. Happened to RockStrongo after a calibration, but I think it was from a power outage or something.......

Hey Stixx, that doesn't sound right or normal. Unless you tapped into the SM, which resets everything to factory settings. Eliab is pretty good with his email replys and I'm sure he wouldn't mind trying to help you find out what the problem may have been. Good luck, and keep us posted.

These sets have a "demo/shop" mode. It's used in show rooms to reset to "torch" if a customer changes any of the settings.

I don't recall the method for turning "demo/shop" mode on and off but it's easy enough to do by accident. It's something like "hold the menu button down for five seconds". You can check with Eliab or look in the main owner's thread for the "87"/"88" models for better information.

Found it -- menu button for over five seconds.

Yes, my set had an issue with reverting to factory service menu settings. It was VERY frustrating. Luckily, we found this out before David had left town.

My set reverts to factory service menu settings (not just user settings mind you) when the set loses power OR you go back into the service menu.

VERY VERY ODD

David from avical had never seen this happen. Now, I have a power supply for the tv AND a spreadsheet of the service menu settings just in case.

I've also been enjoying ur 7178 since Saturday morning.....I spent more than six hours in front of the set on Saturday, watching three movies off of HDNet. I watched both football playoff games on Sunday, and 24 on Monday.

Eliab's settings make this set look terrific!

Also, I noticed my set is a December build. Hopefully, I have the supposedly "improved" light engine and will be able to count on a problem-free set for some time (although I bout the EW) .

I am not familiar with the "improved" LE. Were there modifications made to prolong the life of it in the latest models? I purchased a warranty on my lamp as well, only 99.00, so I'm covered up to 4 years for a replacement.... Thought it was too good a deal to pass up. Along with Eliab's settings I also turned off overscan ( figured it out finally ) and noticed an additional improvement in PQ. I finally got DVE so I'll do a calibration tonight and see how that looks...don't know how much better it can get though! This set rocks.

I'm with you, Bocel. I don't know how much better this set can get. Absolutely loving it. Just got HD cable hooked up today ... fantastic!

Hope I'm not overdoing it, but just wanted to post more good news. Just got my HD cable stuff setup today. Absoutely awesome. I do really love my 7178W !!!!
