I haven't heard anyone comment on viewing height

For the first 2 months I used the TR71B. So viewing from the seating area was pretty much eye level, looked great. Once I finished my entertainment unit, suddenly the platform it was sitting on starts at 35". Hoy CR#P, I was really concerned at first but this set is so bright and large it has been no problem at all. Looks fantastic. I would not worry too much about how high it sits, it will look great.....

This is the company that delivered my set from NY, to Ventura .CA. They were used by the company I purchased from, and did a good job and were on top of things. I checked their site and it may work for you......Yeah...2500 for the 7178???? killer deal......

Sorry for not responding earlier. You'll definitely need something besides the stock stand for your center speaker. I have the Yamaha SoundBar (about 7"), and it just fits on the bottom shelf - not the top.

Re the TV height on the stand --- I find it perfect (the base is still on) when sitting in normal sized furniture. My husband wants it about 3 inches higher (he's 6'5", and tall from the waist up).

2500 for the 7178 brand new? Jump on that right now.

I can't believe that my local BB wants 3799 for their last floor model that's been on the floor since September: they won't budge on the price, either.

what a bunch of cheapos they are at that store. i went to three in my area and only one had a new on which is getting delivered tomorrow. at least the other stores offered me a $500 giftcard for their floor model which was on the floor "for anywhere from five to seven months"

Just wanted to share on my excitement. I called Avical and set up an appointment with David to come by and calibrate my 7178 this Friday. Luckily I live only 40 miles north of LA ( the west coast base ) and he had an opening on friday. Along with disabling overscan I have only tweaked some basic settings, ( with DVE ) Contrast/Brightness/ Sharpness...too chicken to delve deep into color settings and the service menu so even though it looks good to me I'm sure it will be a big improvement. I'll be sure to give a review of the experience afterwards....

My 7178 will be arriving this Saturday. Can someone give me pros and cons on the compatibility on the above models. TIA

Tell David I said Hi. (He could not make it to me, so he refered me to Gregg Loewen)

compatibility on the above models

That is the exact blend I am using right now. The 970 does a great job with the 7178, I have not used any other Oppo but I can tell you there are no macroblocking issues with the 970. ( some folks report some macroblocking with other Oppos's, I think Oppo reccomends the 970 with DLP's ) I think once I go HDDVD I will keep theOppo in-line as it is a great universal player...plays everything and does DVDA and SACD as well...Can't think of any cons with this combo... The price is right....Every type of audio output you will ever need..It's not HD but pretty darn close in some situations. ( good HD transfer/ Pixar stuff/ ect..) )

Help please...

I am trying to calibrate my new 7178. I have found the settings I want and made the adjustments but every time I turn the TV off all the settings revert to default. I have tried this on broadcast TV, S-Video and HDMI. I have tried using the menu button to exit after making the changes and using the exit button. No matter what I do all the picture settings revert to default when i turn the tv off and back on. I called Samsung when I first tried this and was only trying to adjust the settings for the HDMI. They said the tv wouldn't remember settings for HDMI because the source signal was correct and the tv was just passing through the signal the way it was being sent. This sounded fishy to me but I tried the broadcast and s-video to see if it would make a difference. But of course it didn't.

I'm sure I am missing something simple. But after reading the manual, searching on-line help, calling tech support and searching here I can't figure out what it is.

Please help me,
Thanks

Which settings are you changing?

Check the starting settings in the Eliab link at the bottom of my post.

You might be in "shop mode". Here is a link to instructions.

Get your HL-S TV out of "shop mode".

The Samsung HL-S DLP sets have "shop mode" to force the set back to Dynamic Mode when they are being used in showrooms. If some customer changes the menu settings, 30 minutes later those settings revert back to Samsung's desired showroom settings (Dynamic mode with DNIe ON, etc.).

Solution:

1. Power ON with the set displaying a normal image.

2. Press and hold the MENU button for five seconds. Use the Menu button on the TV's front panel, not the remote control.

The TV will blank for one second, and now be out of "shop mode". This mode can be toggled ON or OFF by repeating the steps. If you are out of "shop mode" the TV will "hold" it's video settings without automatically resetting every 30 minutes.

That was it. Thanks very much!

You're welcome. You've also made a contribution to the ways to detect "Shop Mode". It seems to be both time related and power cycle related. That's a new one for me.

Enjoy.

best buy and directv convinced me that the hr20 is the only way to have an hd dvr. my question on the hr20 is the hdmi connection. read earlier in this thread about some troubles and no troubles. it worked at first for the setup, but once it completed the setup, i got the weak or no signal error when trying to tune an hd channel. installer switched me to component cables, but i'd prefer hdmi. now i believe it's connected using the cable that came with the hr20 so i'm gonna try to use one of my monster cables to see if that's the problem. anything else to check?

now i prefer the tivo interface and willing to ebay an hr10. any issues with hdmi connections there? anything else i should consider in using an hr10 instead of the hr20?
in to read this thread in a bit. I found interest in this tv and need to research it.

Bobcel-
Thanks again for your quick respond to my question. How about the music quality? I will be playing with my SACD collections, I plan to disconnect my SACD Sony player and use OPPO with my set up along with my high end Stereo systems. (Mark Levinson Amp 3.4 and pre amp with Montana speakers) TIA..
I've got the Oppo 981 and have had no macroblocking issues with either the Sammy 7178, nor with a Sony 40V2500 LCD.

The 970 is a bit less, and seems to work great for folks - that's probably what I'd do if I had it to do over, but no complaints with the 981.

Well this is very subjective. I think the Oppo does a fairly good job with Sacd and DVDA's, ( good reviews too for the audio output ) High end audio........well........I don't think you could expect real audiophile performance from a universal player in general, especially at the price. I do use it through my Adcom gear and Energy Speakers.... it does sound great(to me).........but for critical listening...( if that's your actual question )...maybe not......hope this helps...

Straight to the point, all is it worth waiting for the HL-T7288W or should I just drop the ball on the HL-S7178?

The light engine/tunnel problems shake me up but was that fixed in the newer HL-S7178 models?

The price of the 7178 right now is really nice due to the "closeout" sales.

Has anyone heard what the price of the HL-T model will be when it gets released? Only found one website with a price.
My new HL-S7178W was just delivered today, and it's stunning. I went with Eliab's "suggested starter settings", and things are looking quite good out of the box. Next step: an Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive, and HD Video Essentials (once the Xbox dashboard update hits).

For anyone on the fence, I can definitely recommend this model. Based on the price I got mine (at a B&M store, no less), you should be able to get one for at least a thousand clams less than the new HL-T7288W will be when it streets. That will buy a LOT of HD disc titles to enjoy.
Believe it or not, after my HL-R7178 failed for the second time, I called Samsung about two weeks after the warranty had expired. Because the first repair had taken several weeks, they extended the warranty by two months, and put in the service request.

It needs a new digital board ---- and after waiting 2 weeks, I called back, escalated to the "Executive Customer Satisfaction Department", and spoke with Gwen, who determined that not only were there no digital boards available at the moment, they also had no ETA for them at all.

So Samsung is going to send me an HL-S7178, and take away the dead HL-R7178.

Goodbye horribly glossy screen! Goodbye 1080i HDMI!

I even have a tracking number for the new set (although they haven't got it to the shipper just yet).

==================================================
Update: It's on the truck, and will be in the neighborhood on the 15th!
==================================================

Now to see if they can do anything about the ridiculous overscan on my HL-R4667. Will I get lucky again?????

My Avical review
Greetings everyone. I had the pleasure to have David Abrams from Avical out to calibrate my 7178 approx a week ago. I wanted to acclimate myself a few days to get a real feel for the benefits.
Like many others, PQ is greatly improved( I thought it looked good before ) the detail in the blacks is outstanding, colors and flesh tones are spot onacross the board. With a good HD source broadcast, the PQ is 3D like. Usual artifacts I frequently saw are minimized or gone completely. SD, which of course pales in comparison, is definitely acceptable now. Another thing is that in my area, PBS had always looked soft in comparison to other HD broadcasts, now 90% of the time it is crystal clear. (other 10% is just bad footage )
Dave calibrated and set up scan rates for all my inputs, and although I do not use all of them currently, I am really pleased they are ready to go when I am. Dave is a very nice guy, an experienced, total professional, informative and a pleasure to converse with whether it be technology or just movie talk, you will feel right at home and comfortable with your choice of having your set ISF calibrated. In my case, that may apply to others, I have not purchased an HD DVD or BR player as of yet (which was a concern for me at first) but Dave said when I do it would not be a problem as my 7178 is ready to go and he would assist me on setting the player up. Not only will you have absolutely knock out PQ, but a valuable resource if you have further questions or issues with your set. I do own an Oppo player which is now set up properly and the PQ is really outstanding.
In summary, if you buy a Baby Grand, it is a beautiful thing.have it tuned properlyand your taken to a whole new level. .If you are considering a calibration save your shekels and just do it, and by all means.have Avical do the jobThanks again Dave

Bobcel,

Thank you for your kind words and hospitality! I actually just got back late last night from a Denver/Salt Lake City calibration tour and am currently gearing up for a tour to Northern California taking place shortly, perhaps I'll stop by and say high to my friends at Oppo and DVDO.

Anyhow, I'm thrilled to hear that you are enjoying the benefits of a properly calibrated display!

Good Pictures!

Dave
