howdy all! still in the set up stage. sort of! on the issue of stand height, the 14" stand puts you right in eyeball center of the screen. however, i am starting to notice it seems as if the TV "deserves" to be higher off the ground! like it is "too good a TV" to be so low. as well, i seem to focus more on the center of the image and less on the overall image, and on very little of the bottom of the image. and i am starting to think if it were up a higher, i would maybe look up at it from the bottom of the image up and see more of what is happening in total. any ideas or thoughts on this? i guess it's perspective mostly.
also, i noticed that when rearranging my parlor to accommodate the 71, i moved my 23"LCD down which once sat up higher to a similar level coffee table to match the height of the new 71 stand as they oppose each other on opposite walls. one for solo TV and one for family TV. yet now that too, seems too low, as when it was higher, it seemed like it was much bigger than only 23", and now appears to be 10"! is it an optical illusion? height versus size, times TV dementia!
anyway, starting to think of a higher stand for the 71, as i have a 50/50 on the current stand. the men who see it love it, and the women who see it, hate it and say the TV should be higher. perplexed to say the least, but i am sure that the samsung 23" LCD looked much bigger in the corner unit at 34" high than it does now at 17" high. and now the 71 appears to be shrinking as well. any thoughts on this? do all monster TV's shrink as you get use to them, or do i need to buy a bigger stand?
on another issue, here's a question for roller11, what is it you were saying about the 71 upconverting naturally to 1080P?
can you shed some insight into that? as i have gone the extra mile on all the extras possible which i hadn't planned to, but have, and my first impression of the upconversion issue is confused to say the least. i was told at BB that the Samsung Blu Ray was the way to go, and that it would unconvert and play "all" discs as well. and i bought in. but upon opening it up, there is a label right on the top of it saying, "will NOT" play HD-DVD's. so, much for it playing "all" as they said. now i am contemplating what next? is it the best buy? or was it excess? has anyone done side to side comparisons? i tried a few, but i simply forget which was best as i seem to get caught up in the movie everytime i switch back and forth and by movie's end, i forget! i do not plan on owning a large collection of Blu Ray discs and will most likely continue to rent movies as i do, but what about HD-DVD's? will i miss out without those via the Blu Ray? i already bypassed my built in DVD player in my Onkyo Surround system that i once loved with a fiber optic cable direct to the BR. So, that DVD player is now an ornament. and yet, when i went out to CC the other night, the guy there tells me the opposite of BB, and says that HD-DVD is superior to Blu Ray and the future of HD? and then i see DVD players there that say they upconvert to 1080P? and they only run about 150. So, what is what? any ideas on where my money is best kept other than my pocket when it comes to getting 1080P? By the way, BB has a deal on all older model Samsung Blu Ray player's right now, if you they have any left in stock. app. 450. factory sealed.
and as for the stand issue, anyone got there's at around 21"? As that is the stand i'm thinking of switching to, altho, the 14" stand is eye center. so, how is looking up a bit on viewing? the Samsung official 71 stand is 19.something"'s.
and for anyone interested in a solid 14" stand, the one i used, is the Ikea LACK series Mocha, or Brown/Black. and this was after reviewing about 30 different stands, looking for a simplistic yet stylish and affordable stand that didn't look so much like a traditional TV stand. my price range was between 199. to 399. and i ended up with 69. a Ikea.
it measures app. 59"wide and 14" high, and looks quite sleek under the 71 if you keep the base on so the slight overhang looks natural. about 3-4" on each side, but the dark color of the stand subdues that nicely. Anyway, it was only 69. bucks! draw back to this point, only space for 3.5 components beneath! so, another reason i am looking at a different stand, altho, i could end up keeping this one depending on feedback here on going higher?
If anyone can tell me how to post a pic here, i can put one up with the LACK under the 71. ???
p.s. and last, anyone know about Direct Tv dishes interfering with over the air HD signals? my neighbor gets great HD across the hall, and i can't get one channel here. there is DT Dish within 7 feet of my antenna and TV on the downstairs apt. balcony ceiling. we tried my new amplified HD antenna in my neighbors apt across the hall and it works there, but nothing in my apt. any insight into this issue? geekers my posts are long...
