I can't wait until November.

You're very welcome. And thanks for your kind words as well!

Looks like the 2nd gen hd players have been announced (a week ago) and will have 1080p playback with hdmi 1.3 (but costs ~$1000).

I haven't had any luck with mine... Seems to work about about 10% of the time and usually without audio. Dish likes to blame the HDMI issues on issues with the standard or the various TV manufacturers, blah, blah, blah... But in reality, the ViP HD receivers don't have a proper HDMI port. They're using some generic chipset that skirts the HDMI licensing (notice no mention or proper logo referencing HDMI on these units). It's an "HDTV" port. FWIW, the component output from my 622 looks great and is really indistingquishable from an HDMI connection from this unit. I don't know if it's true, but I've seen from multiple sources that the faux-HDMI connection on these boxes actually just digitally encodes the component video signal anyway. Dish will eventually have to fix these units, which is not likely so they will ultimately just replace with a newer model. And this will have to happen at some point before they can start enforcing the DVI/HDMI with HDCP output for HD content...

Or for true 1080p support, all us Xbox 360 owners will be able to add the HD-DVD upgrade for about $180 sometime in the next few months. Microsoft is releasing it first in Japan to combat initial PS3 sales... They will be providing a free firmware update to enable 1080p on the xbox 360. Now all we need is an HDMI or DVI cable for the thing...

Can the overscan be permanently disabled on the HL-S7178W?

I have seen where it can be permanently disabled on the xx88 models, only temporarily disabled on xx878 models. Because there is only one model of the 71" which catagory does it fall under?

I am looking a hooking a HTPC to the tv, and would like to have as litte overscan as possible. Is it better to use the vga or HDMI connector for a pc?

Also will the set accept 1080p 24fps on any of the inputs?

Yes, setting overscan to off sticks on these sets.

The 7178 is in the exact same category as the xx88s. In fact, the manual that ships with the 7178 is the same one that ships with all xx88 sets.

Watched the "Chronicles of Narnia" last night on StarzHD and I think it's the best picture I've seen thus far on the TV. I'll try and get some pics...

Heya all,

I just thought I would share with you my successes on finding the tv and matching stand at the cheapest prices I could find. I found the TV for $3300 and $129 shipping thru crazy4digital and the stand(TR71B) for $270 plus $83 shipping(to east coast) from sensibleaudio. The cheapest I could find the Toshiba HD DVD player for was the special they are running from this site for $399 plus a free movie and $15 ship. Now we all know there is some RISK involved going through these cheap online dealers, so I'll update this later if my backside gets sizzled (I picked up the 5 year extended warranty from the TV dealer as well for only around $550 and they threw in 3 day air shipping with it)

Yeah, its definately a risk buying from that retailer, but it might just turn out to be a good savings. I spent a couple hundered more, but got it from tva....it hasnt shipped yet (I just ordered at the end of last week).

As far as the extended warranty, I think you might have spent too much (depending on what it covers). I got a 5 year repairmaster warranty, for under $200. If you can still make changes, pm me and ill send you the details.

What's the repairmaster warranty? Still haven't got an extended yet....

These prices are for the 7178? Seems to have come down quite a bit if in the 3.4 range

I went to samsungparts.com to order a replacement lamp today. I figured it's good to have one on standby if the lamp goes. I expected one part number, but it came up with four.

Anyone know what's the correct one to have handy? I guess the K220?

Model No. : HLS7178W

[previous 10] [ 1 ] [next 10]
Part Number Description Specification Price Add to cart
BP47-00029A LAMP-BALLAST PT VIP 3AC/380,150W,15KV $135.54
BP47-00033A LAMP-BALLAST EUC 132D P/41,160 MM CABLE, $172.30
BP96-01472A ASSY LAMP P K2,PHILIPS 132W,HD5 $198.06
BP96-01600A ASSY LAMP P K220,PHILIPS 150W,E22,SVC $199.99

Good pricing?

Tomorrow I'm getting my stand. After it's installed I'll take some pix and post them. Mind you, I'm no photographer and I'm not sure how to attach to a post. I'll do my best. Tonight I gotta get everything cleared out, take my components apart, (hate it when I have to do that) label the connections, and clear out my room so they can assemble and install everything. Finally will be here and I'm psyched to get everything finally done.

What stand did you get? My tv just shipped but I still need to get a stand.

Ya, the $3300 I spent was for the 7178, I figured if I waited another 3-5 months, someone would sell it for under 3k, but I CANT WAIT THAT LONG! I need my fix

Thx Rock for the repairmaster tip, I googled it and it seems like a good deal, do you know if the "repairmaster" plans have been around for a while? I bought a car warranty like that once and the company craped out and I lost my money.

Only the HD-XA2 will output @ 1080p. The HD-A2 will still only output @ 1080i.

Good question. I'm not 100% sure but I believe that both will render about 1-1.5% cropping.

No.

If you purchased your display with a credit card, check with your CC company to see if they automatically extend the warranty. Many will double it for a period of up to a year beginning after the original warranty expires.

They have been around a while. I had a repairmaster warranty on my last tv (had it about 3 years I guess), but never had to use it.

Supposedly, if repairmaster gets bought out or whatever, it will transfer. You can read about it in the info.

Justinrx let me know when you get your tv. I was going to purchase one from them also.

Thanks.

This is my new custom stand. The only thing that I would have liked to do different is the height, but with all of the components plus what I plan to add on later, this was the way to go.

I'll post other pictures with the rest of my gear pictured.

Ahh, very nice. I would recommend removing the base to lower the TV about an inch.
Have you seen the pics of my setup? I'm very pleased as well.
By removing the base it would set the cabinets against the floor, so that is not an option. I do know what you mean though because as he was intalling, he took the top off the base and I kind of liked it, but this is it. I did see your setup. NICE.

My camera is charging. I'll take more pictures later on so you can get a look at what's inside.
Oh, you mean the base of the set. Sorry. Misunderstood you. I'll attempt to do that this weekend when the guys are over to watch the game. They can help me lift the t.v.

I'm not sure what you mean about setting the cabinets against the floor? We're both talking about removing the base of the TV right?
You are correct. I was thinking the base of the stand at the bottom and my brain isn't working too swiftly today.
