I bought a stand yesterday from Best Buy. Its a Bush metal and glass stand.

I attached a close-up pic of the base. Hopefully you can make it out okay. If not, PM me and I'll email you the full sized images.

Thanks again, that helps a lot!

I searched and could not find anything on this topic so I am hoping someone can help. I have a 7178 which I have connected to my Denon A/V receiver via optical cable so that I can get Dolby Digital playback for OTA via the built in tuner. That connection works great so I assumed (my first mistake?) that all audio sources connected directly to the 7178 would use that optical connection, particularly my new HD camcorder I have connected via Firewire (Canon HV10 - awesome little HD camcorder). The video via the Firewire hookup looks incredible but I get no audio through my A/V sound system. I can hear audio from the camcorder through the TV speakers so I know the audio is being sent to the 7178 via Firewire, but I really do not want to use the TV speakers if I do not have to. Is this set not capable of passing audio via optical out from other inputs besides the built in tuner?

Joe

It can, but im not surprised it is having a problem.

I had my Tivo series 3 connected to the hdmi input on the tv and was letting the optical out from the tv go to the receiver for sound.

Sometimes I would get no sound. Turning the set or tivo on/off wouldnt work neither would cycling the input on the receiver. After some time (10-15 minutes) it would finally work.

So, I just connected the Tivo directly to the receiver via optical to avoid this problem.

Hi all...

I'm about a month away from placing my order for the 7178. I have been visiting Magnolia about once a week for the last 2 months comparing it to the Mitz 73"...and this in my opinion is a clear winner.

Currently looking for a stand. Want furniture (wood), and not metal and glass. This is going in our living room, and so my wife and I are wanting a nice furniture grade stand for it.

I found this which we both like:

http://www.potterybarn.com/products/...key=cfurabstvs

Its 65" wide, so there will be a little less than half inch over-hang on each side. My main concern is height. The stand is 27" tall, which is a little taller than I would like. However, the main seating area is around 15 to 18 feet away (its a big room - hence the need for a BIG TV! )

Using orange electrical tape, I have taped markings on the wall for top of stand (bottom of TV) and top of TV. Sitting on the couch and looking at that area...it doesn't look too bad in regards to screen height....just not sure. One thing is for sure...this TV must be HUGE!!!

Anyhow, wanted to see about getting some owner opinions. Anyone have theirs on a stand of this height (i.e. between 25 and 30 inches)? Thoughts?

Thanks in advance! Oh, and I have loved reading this thread...great info!

funny...I'm also waffling between the 7178 and Mits 73" (...732). Planning to finalize a purchase this week. arggghhhh.. this is tougher than buying a car!

I just received my TR71B stand so now I am looking to remove the plastic support base that came on the bottom of my 7178. I found and removed the two screws in the back then tried wiggling pushing and pulling the two tabs but the base seems to be secured through some other way that I am completely missing. If anyone could drop me a few pointers it would be much appreciated!

I also scoured the owner's manual and the forums here and it seems like no one else is having the same problem as me so its probably something really obvious....

Yay! Just got my 7178 a few days ago.

Could someone PM me instructions on how to get into the service menu and disable CCA? I promise to be careful.

Thanks!

mine does this as well.... only happens about 30 min after the TV was turned off....

This has been happening ever since I got the TV and I thought that maybe the plastic is expanding from the heat produced from the bulb and it will eventually settle. Two months have passed...No change.

I tried loosening the screws for the pack panel, thinking that maybe the panel needs more freedom to expand, but still no change.

I removed the small plastic stand on the bottom of the set when I first got the TV. Is it possible that this caused it? Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks guys. Appreciate all the help and info I got from this thread.

Just ordered my 7178...so I'm almost "officially" allowed to post in this thread. Now trying to figure out which stand to get.

Waited for CES announcements before ordering, but don't see anything in the 70" range that rocks my boat so far (well, Sony came out with the 70" LCD, but I can buy 10 Sammy 7178s for their MSRP).
Just ordered mine too!.....They say delivery is the 15th.....gonna be a longgggg weeeeeek. I bought the matching stand, until I have a custom cabinet built...by far the least expensive option, for stands. I just could not stand having this beauty on some coffee table or the floor that long....... I'm sure I'll be posting some nube questions soon, I apologize in advance...
First nube question... I was sifting through the owners manual (pdf) and did not see any instructions for changing out the lamp, however the 6767 manual does. Sinces the TV's are virtually identical is the process the same on the 7178? Just curious for when the inevitable time comes...

There is a guide on the Samsung website. It is very easy - just make sure the set has cooled down.

Page 156: Appendix, Replacing the lamp (with picts on the adjoining page) of the "Owner's Instruction" manual has all you need. The manual covers HL-S5088 thru HL-S7178 I have not seen the PDF ver. of the manual.

The pdf I downloaded from Samsung did not include the procedure in the appendix, thank you guys for the info, I'm sure it will be in the manual when I take delivery.

Thanks letsjet, I did see that link on their site. Anyone in So Cal with Time Warner have issues getting the HDMI top box? I ordered Digital Cable and HD but the only available set at this time is a Moxy, so I'll have to settle for component until they get in the new boxes, they say at the end of the month..........he hopes.. Does HDtv look pretty decent over component? I'll still be using HDMI from my OPPO for DVD's

I desperately need to know how this thing works as a monitor on a PC. I am trying to decide between this or the smaller LCD. I will be showing still photographs.
I am running a pc behind my hl-s7178 thru the VGA connector. I am running at 1920x1080. I was able to get a nearly 1:1 pixel mapping by going into the menu and first auto adjusting the picture. Then I used the remote (blue button) to center and adjust the height and width almost perfectly! The secret is to have the tv auto-adjust itself first using the menu. The quality of the picture is stunning. I also am running Vista with aero glass effects and vista allows scaling of fonts perfectly. So I can actually read a website from 9-10 feet away using the 1920x1080 resolution.
I sometime will put the pc in 1280x720 which is also awesome. No difference in quality between the 2 resolutions. of course other resolutions work, but circles are oval!

Defintely works!!
By the way, I forgot. This TV will read JPG's from a USB thumb drive directly!! The pictures are stunning! You use the menu to get to the USB port reading.

There is also a button on your remote.

Does anyone have this 7178 Samsung paired with DirecTV? I found the HR20 box (DirecTV HD DVR unit) at my local Best Buy. They have been out of stock for forever, so I picked it up (because was worried about them going out of stock again). I won't place the order for the 7178 for another 2 weeks, so curious if anyone has the DirecTV HR20 hooked up to the 7178. And....does HDMI work ok?

Thanks so much!

I got involved in a scenario somewhat like yours. My former TV (a HL-P6163, that I had for two years) went to my ex-wife. They (her and her husband) live in the shadow of a mountain range that block OTA reception. So what they get is "big snow". Me being a nice guy, and having a BB gift card went there and purchased a HR20. (on back order) I then tried to set up service with D*TV. I found, even with the sale @ BB, it was going to cost me more ($100) than if I made the purchase direct from D*TV. (they were also offering discounts for new subscribers and had the PVR in stock) So back I went to BB and now I still have money on the card!

Had our 7178 delivered tuesday the 9th ( One day late to watch my beloved Buckeyes get their.........oh thats another story!)

Replaced a Panasonic CRT PT-51HX41E 1080i HDTV ready with a DishN 811 HD STB that I moved to the kids room for gaming, this was not a bad TV by any means, all the years I have had it I had not one minutes problem with it. None.

But we replaced the 811 with the Vip 622 DVR, it and the 71 arrived literally at the same time, Both the delivery guy for TV and the Dish guy were here at the same time! Pretty convenient eh? Am still running sound through my Panasonic SA-HT900 home theater system. Its not the worlds best, but I'm done spending money right now!

Anyways I am in HDTV HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!

Even though my TV doesn't work right!

After setting the set up, and delivery guy gone. The dish guy and I were like hum? No sound? None. We had hooked the DVR up through the HDMI and the picture is aw inspiring! I mean it , well, its, almost undescribably good! I have watched a few basketball games through OTA that I hooked up to the back of the DVR. And its just stunning, I felt like I was in the game! I was able to get sound from the DVR via optical cable to the Pana 900 system.

But here is my concern, after checking out the rest of the TV. I found that the Component videos don't work as well. I'm thinking oh great here we go. I call Samsung support. Have me check to see if the chime, which I didn't even know exsisted, was turned on. It was, still no sound. So I was told that with no sound and no Component inputs working they would send out service. But was told they couldn't schedule any one right then. their locating system was down. Was told to call next morning (Wensday) before 10:00 and would schedule then. Called before 10:00, system still down, but they would call me back. Well they did call, mind you we are very rural part of Ohio. Somewhere close to the middle of no where. Told me Friday between 4:00 and 6:00. Actually I was kind of impressed given how far off the beaten path we live. A very nice younger guy (that seemed to know what he was doing!) and his father, true father son deal I guess showed up almost exactly at 4. Young guy pulls the back off set and walla, the sound was just not plugged in correctly. Bingo 1st problem solved. But he checked all the inputs and sure enough the Component Inputs are not working. Was told he needs to replace a board that has these components on it. But here is my fear. Will this change all my setting for the PQ. Through reading these threads I have already entered the service mode for this TV and took Digital pics of every screen I could find. So if I have to renter the setting I can. Does anyone know if replacing this board is going to change my setting so I can warn him before he screws my New Love up! ( Um worse then it is)

Thank you in advance for your response.

Its funny you would think I'd be less then happy with a problem like this. But if they fix it? And as good as this PQ is! I'll be just Tickled Pink I bought this Monster!

Thanks Letsjet. I heard on the set-top-box side of this forum that Samsung has an issue with HDMI and the DirecTV boxes. Glad to hear it does work.

For cables, I think I have a good HDMI on order:

http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/D...s.html#hdmi-r2

It seems to be the best HDMI RAM cables has to offer, and looks like a chunky cable. I got two of these in 6 foot lengths. Hopefully my setup works too!

Been watching through HDMI for months with no problem. I think the problem people are having is poor cables. The cable is thick and doesn't bend much.

Good luck

If he only replaces the "analog" board nothing changes with your picture. If he replaces the Digital Board, then he will have to copy cca data from the DMD board to the new Digital board. A command in your service menu called DMD>Digital. If he changes the digital board make a note to record the current firmware version on your set. Then you will be able to determine if a new digital board has any updated firmware on it. It sounds like a minor connection problem to me. Also, you might ask him to check your ring focus before he puts the chassis back in. Sometimes the optical focus is slightly off. good luck.
