Does this include Canadians? I called a local service center and they simply told me to take some pics of the problem, give the HDTV's model #, serial # and send it to them.

The lady on the line made it sound like a known problem. Hopefully this will be resolved quickly.

After thinking about this i sent a small letter to sony with my own proposal and to my surprise they offered me the same tv for $50 as their final offer.Needless to say i accepted.

Had my 2nd OB replaced yesterday. All was well until today when I turned it on. Now I have a black bar about 1 inch running across the top part of the screen. And the remote doesn't work now either. Time for another call to the repair center.

Hi,

I have an KDS-60A2000 with an optical block issue.. I like the "Green Screen of Death" monikor where gray scale is now green scale. (It sits above my XBOX that was recently repaired for the "3 Red Rings of Death" issue.)

I've contacted Sony here in Canada, and they've made a couple of offers..

Behind door #1...
A KDL-55V5100 LCD for $600 CDN (retails at Canadian Sony stores for $2999 CDN)

door #2...
A 52" XBR 10 for $1950 CDN (Retails for $4999)

or door #3...
Or a free repair of my KDS-60A2000 optical block with a 90 day warranty.

So, what is the best deal, and why?

had the ob replaced again a couple weeks ago

that evening and the day after i noticed some issues:

geometry problems (picture of center, to the left) never had this issue before or had to use the 'horizontal' adj

the pc input -- the left side of the screen is blurred and the viewable area is not centered (once again, never had this before, th viewable area was always centered) the 'horizonatal adj' only works within the iewable area

also there is a phantom light on the right hand side of the screen that appears after the tv has been on a few hours, if you turn the set off or turn off the dvd or the bluray the screen will go black, and you will seee like a string of light on the right hand side tht looks like the backlight is leaking through for 30 secs to 1 min

also there is a yellow./greeen tinge that i'm seeing in the lower left corner and along the top of the screen

--

so basically i called sony the next day and they seet up another appointment

dude came out and bsically spent 2 hours twiddling his thumbs ignoring what i'm telling him and saying he can't find a problem

saying i'm seeing reflections and that my computer has the problem...ignoring the obvious geometry issue and instead he is messing with my settings. and then he admits he never worked with pc input issues and said he would call tech support

i told him the phantom light issue is noticible t night and the tv had to be on for some hours before it started happening

i told him that i never had these issues before the OB was replaced the last time and he refused to chnge it out

more time was passing and he basically is saying there was nothing he could do and mumbling some nonsense about dust getting on the bulb and was just sitting on hold and so i got tired and sent him on his way

i had decided i have to wait for the problems to get worst, now my lamp decided to die on me, i i don't even think it's worth buying new lamp

really pissed off

set has gone through 4 lamps in just under 3 years

i guess i'll need to get a new bulb and wait for the set to turn to bright green before i call sony again

Door #1 - you get a size close to what you have
- price of original tv plus 600 = price of new tv
- OB replacements don't seem to work out

well my OB was replaced for the second time on 09/18 so that's three counting the original and what do you know the TV is Blue again! When its started cold the picture has hardly any color other than Blue for about 3 minutes then returns to almost normal until you get a dark scene. And night or evening scene the black is not black but blue. It look like every movie is shot using indoor florescent lights! So I called ABT again and told them I don't want another repair and they are finally getting off their ass and contacting Sony directly on my behalf so we will see. I bet I get another Sony card in the mail asking to rate their service again I just love sending those in!
Well ABT called back and said that they don't know why but Sony refuses to do anything but replace the OB again and will keep doing so. So it looks like I am in the 3rd party extended warrantee black hole. Would this be like a car where after multiple fixes for the same problem it would be considered a lemon and replaced?

I'll be picking up my court papers on Monday for my a3000.

I am on my 5th OB replacement in 2 years and I am convinced that sony has the worst customer service that I have ever encountered.

Then again, you know what they say, when you have good service from a company you tell a few people. When you have bad service you go out of your way to tell everyone and it gets worse with each telling...
I'm having a tech come Friday (11/13) to come replace my OB (2nd time now). First replacement was back in April or May of this year. Since I'm convinced that this replacement isn't actually going to fix the problem, I'm hoping that they'll offer me some sort of credit next time around.
Got Service Net involved in the fray....Sony has referred my case to the engineering /technical section to see why my last OB made it only 6 days before turning green. Ready...They think something else may be wrong with the tv...well no s**t, Captain Obvious. I expect nothing but continued denial by sony but wtf, i have lots of rollover minutes and drive alot.
I was talking to the dumb s**ts in CS, I asked if they were willing to replace the OB 17 more times (OB warranty extended to 6/30/11). Their answer, "yes".
If I can only get them to remove the set from my house to a bench for testing...
Never in my life...........

I do not seem to be experiencing any picture problems on my KDS-60A2000...at least none that I can see that relate to many of the pictures posted in the class action suit documentation. I did call Sony and then was refered to a local Sony Service Center. Apparently, they have approved a replacement and the OB is being ordered. Would you suggest having the OB replaced to prolong the life and function of the set...or could this just lead to additional problems if I don't currently have one. My inital feel was that I should replace the OB to avoid problems down the road...but now I am getting the jitters. The local shop will pick up the set, have it for 3 days to do the replacement and then return within that period. Would appreciate input. Thanks!

Simple...If it aint broke, don't fix it.

The "fix" could be much worse as these blocks are being refurbed...maybe...or maybe just shuffled to the next unlucky customer.

They aren't manufacturing new parts anymore. Leave it be!

your kidding, right?
cancel the service call.
i agree with if it ain't broke don't fix it.
look through this thread and you'll see many with multi OB replacements.
mine is fine and i would never entertain the thought.

Well ABT called on Sunday and said that they want to help out with this problem. So I went in today and I could have replaced my set with the XBR9 LCD for about $800 but I really didn't want another Sony. So they told me to pick out what I wanted and they would make an offer. It came down to the Sharp LC60E77UN for $1170 or the Samsung UN55B6000 for $1000 so the Samsung will be delivered on Friday and they are taking the Sony back. Still its another $1100 with tax out of my pocket but at least the set will be replaced. I just hope I made the right choice for the 55" Samsung vs. the 60" Sharp.

My 2020 is a little over 2 years old (just past Costco 2yr warranty) and has been great. Still on original bulb. The other day I was watching Fox News HD on my FIOS service when Yellow blotches appeard all over the screen. I changed channels and it was still there. I shut the TV off for about a minute and turned it back on and they were gone and have not appeared again. I came on here and reviewed the OB problem posts and thought that might be the problem but it only occurred once. If an OB is damaged it would always be there correct?? I know about the extended warr. until 6-10 and am wondering if I should go ahead and have it replaced? Or would I be asking for trouble? Has anyone out there had the OB replaced and not had anymore troubles?
Would welcome any advice??
BTW - I have always run it on power saving mode and it is plugged into an "Ultimate Outlet" which filters the power and isolate the tv from my electrical. I'm convinced it has a tighter, sharper and deeper color pic.

Just had my OB replaced for the first time and hopefully the last time (knock on wood). Holy crap I knew the picture was going green but WOW didn't realize how bad it really was. I now know why I fell in love w/ this TV to begin with. I just hope I am lucky and got a good replacement OB. But, I wont be holding my breathe.
I have a 60" A2020 and I need some advice. I can see that the picture is blue and I have changed settings to compensate for that. Despite that, the picture looks a little too blue and does not compare to the picture on the bedroom LCD.

I would happily take the discount Sony is offering some on the purchase of a new TV in exchange for the current set. But at the same time, I am seeing some others stuck in a never ending OB-replacement-loop-from-h3ll. I would rather live with the current blue-picture than end up there.

So, I am in a dilemma and don't know what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.

Everything I read seams to indicate that if it turns yellow then it stays that way. Mine only looked awful that one time and hasn't since. Guess I'll leave it alone for now and re-evaluate next spring. Weird.

i have read here a few times of people complaining that their set showed blobs until power cycled and then it never happened again

My 55A2020 has done that once in 2.5 years. I've read of a few other people that it also happened to once. If it keeps happening I would look into a new OB, otherwise stay with what you've got. Bteer the devil you know.

Seems to be a trend. I have replaced my bulb twice now, I know watch a lot of TV

Anyways, after the most recent, there seems to be yellow streaking on the screen. Its not the entire screen but seems streaked in various spots. This last bulb replacement, the guy at the tv shop swapped a new bulb into my housing for me.

Is it possible its either a bad bulb or there is something on the bulb or housing that needs to be cleaned?

Driving me nuts since it was fine until the bulb exploded! I really don't want to buy a new TV but the perfectionist in me can not live with this!

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

2mm sounds pretty large, so, maybe the SM adjustment will help you.

Go to the Service Menu / Panel Menu / 1 TG submenu
Items 1, 2, 3 are the Horizontal Convergence Adjustments for R, G, B
(HSIFTR, HSFTG, HSFTB)
Items 25, 26, 27 are the Vertical Convergence Adjustments for R, G, B
(VSFT_R, VSFT_G, VSFT_B)

To get into the SM, turn power off, press Display, Vol +, then Power on
Use 'Jump' to get to the Panel Menu
Use 2/5 to navigate to the group/submenu
Use 1/4 to navigate to the item
Use 3,6 to change settings
Press Muting then Enter to save settings

I just had my optical block changed. It looks amazing! blacks are back! screen uniformity is awesome and so is the geometry. The convergence WAY was off. But i found this! Tech was able to get it perfect. You gotta love AVS.
yea even though they already agreed to replace my set ABT still had someone come out and replace the OB again and the TV looks the best it ever has. But I just don’t trust that the new one will last so my new set is still coming on Friday. Hope yours lasts a long time!

Hmmm....the more research I do the more it seems like I may have a bad optical block as well. The only color staining is yellow and it just appears in various streaks across the screen.

Wish it could be something as simple as the new bulb that was just installed, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

I guess I'll check the bulb and housing and go from there. If I call Sony, do you think I'm better off pushing for a hella discount on a new TV or just let them replace the OB and wait for it to fail again. I'm not in the best financial position to make a purchase, but for the right price I'd make it happen!

Any way of ruling out the bulb? I hate to have them come out and tell me its not the OB and have to pay for the service call.
Bummer....just called them and asked to even speak to a higher level of support, and they were insistent that a replacement of the optical block is the only offer they're willing to make. I was willing to buy a new TV for 1/3 the price!

So looks like I'm going to be calling one of the techs they gave me to have them come out and fix.

The first guy tried to tell me the new parts have higher quality materials. I told him and his supervisor I saw no evidence of that being the case. He also tried to tell me that they have received no calls about people needing it replaced again after the first time!

Ummm....can we say BS!

The basic answer I got was that if it fails again after June 2010 when the extension runs out, well my luck runs out as well. If that's the case, this will be the last Sony TV I ever buy.

Wish me luck on the repair! Hope it goes smoothly the first time and lasts more than a few weeks.

-----snip-------

That is very odd. My 60A2000 started developing a very slight muudy green discolouration at the extreme top right corner about a month after the warranty expired - really sucked because I didn't get an extended warranty - figured "No moving parts besides the fans, what could go wrong?"

I put up with it because you really couldn't notice it unless you had a very bright screen and were looking for it. Finally changed the bulb out about 2 months ago. It was not blown but 7000+ hours on it so I figured change it out and keep the original as an emergency backup. Regained a lot of brightness (yaaaay) but within a few days the picture went to absolute hell!
From what I read in the last few pages of this thread it is indeed the blue polarizer that is failed, the new bulb was the straw that broke the camels back. Found out about the extension of the ob warranty, called sony, e-mailed pictures, waited.
Within a week they sent me an offer - they would give me a new 55V5100 for $600, delivered to my home. No mention of even attempting a repair.

After thinking about it for about 10 minutes (and a trip to the Sony Store to look at one in person) I decided to go for it - little smaller but 120hz and 4 hdmi inputs, and it fits into my future media room plans better as I won't end up with a projection screen 3 feet from the wall like I would have with the SXRD. Should be here next week

I really don't know why they seem to be so inconsistent - some people are getting multiple repairs, some are getting bought out on the first go around.
