I'm having this issue with my 50a2000. Here are some screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/aLeaF

That is of Sin City, Blu-Ray, running on a PS3, via HDMI. As you can see, what should be in greyscale, actually has an unmistakable green tint. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for everyone who contributed information about the replacement program. I would have never known about it without y'all.

Here is the offer I just received:

KDL46EX500 No charge
KDL55EX500 $200 + local sales tax

I asked about other 55" or 60" sets. Will update when I hear from them.

I have a GTX260 video card, and a KDS60A2000. I would like to know if i bought a DVI to HDMI cable if i could get a 1080 resolution on my videos and games. If so, is this the cable that i would need?

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

Thank you for any help you can give.

Yes it would work with that cable, I've been using my 60a2000 hooked up to a PC with a similar cable. But most likely you will get quiet a bit of overscan and would need to set a custom resolution through the nvidia configuration utility.

hey thanks, im trying to dig up an old adapter i bought which is this one

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

do you think that would work if i can find it? I dont have an HDMI cable long enough to work with it but at least i can test the quality of the overscanning by moving my computer close to my tv and hooking it up before i purchase the cable i linked in previous post. How is the quality of your vidoes after you set up your custom res? Is it on par with bluray?

Yes the adapter should work with an HDMI cable. The picture quality is pretty good I would say, can't compare it with bluray mostly because I don't have a BDRom drive on my PC and I haven't tried many HQ rips, I mostly use it for Hulu, YouTube etc.

Thread a little to long to read all the way through. I had the green/yellow tint and got the OB replaced last year. The past few months I've noticed the screen going solid magenta/purple when changing channels. Also putting TV on Vivid the tv is not what I would call Vivid.

Anyone else with this magenta issue? I can live with it because I can change the settings in custom, but it is irritating and a further disappointment in Sony quality that they can't fix the original problem correctly for the $1800 I spent on their TV.

I have a KDS60A2000 that is giving me trouble AGAIN. I have had a light unit replaced for green screen, 3 bulb replacements, one HDMI port failure and I had noticed the screen was not looking normal. Today, while watching the news the screen went blank but sound was OK. I switched channels and the TV showed a red picture then went blank.

I turned off the set and after a couple of minutes turned it on again and got a blinking green light then the light changed to a slow red steady blink.

I am thoroughly disgusted with this set. I thought maybe it is ANOTHER bulb but when I called I was told this bulb cost $250. plus tax plus $95 for a technician. I do see on line a lamp for $125. but don't know if it is worth trying to fix. I can't see spending any more money on this piece of junk.

Before the screen went blank I had contacted Sony and they asked me to send thim a picture of the screen. Now I can't even do that.

Disgusted.

Replacing a lamp should take maybe 5-10 mins and is easy for anyone to do. No use paying someone $95 for that easy fix.

@generallee Buy the bulb from EB, it's an easy install to do yourself. Sony will reimburse you for the bulb if they deem you eligible for the replacement program. At least with the bulb you'll be able to send them the picture.

I suggest you both contact Mike at the email he provides or contact Sarah Kepler on Facebook.

Thanks for the Tip. Sony said to buy the bulb from them and if I qualify they would reimburse me. Sony charges 250 for the bulb which I can not afford for diagnostics so I Ordered the bulb ....a Philips XL5200 through Amazon for half that.

Possibly the abnormality was the bulb (my 4th) burning out. Sony already replaced the light engine about 2 years ago.

So if I don't qualify for a new set at discount then I won't be out double. If I do qualify, maybe I can sell the KDS60A2000.

Sony said their offer would be for only 1 week because of canging models available. They did offer me a 60ex720 for 1075 and a kdl55ex500 for 200. I know nothing about these tv's and would appreciate advice.

I have had so much bad luck....I almost hope the lamp will not fix the KDS60A2000 as it has been several years of grief.

When reading the feedback on Amazon to the bulb seller, I did note that one buyer complained that their replacement bulb did not fix their green screen. This does not speak well of Sony in not letting their customers know that they are recalling these TV's as being inferior.

The new bulb won't fix the green tint problem. You're OB is going bad and the problem will get worse. You'll love the new Sony and you can't beat the price. I paid $650 for my the 55" , so $200 is a steal. If you want to learn more about the problem, https://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/

I recently had the "4 red power LED blinks" situation come up on my 55A2000. I took the bulb fan out and cleaned it. TV is working fine again. I made the monumental mistake of not taking a picture or paying attention to how the fan was in originally. Yes, the TV is working and the fan is in, but I have no idea if it is correct. I put it back in the way it felt it should go back in. When you pull the fan out it seems like it can only go back in one way..but I dunno.

Can somebody please provide me with a definitive answer? The fan itself has a side with blue Sony and model number lettering and a side that is all black. When you look into the back of your TV at the fan (near the bulb) do you see all black or do you see some blue lettering? Thanks for your help.

I know...green screen means optical block has gone bad. What I had noticed just before bulb failed was discoloration (The blacks were blue faded black, Green grass was more green...reds and blue were good) I had the TV on vivid. Since the optical block was replaced by Sony a couple of years ago, it may be in the early stages of failure.
When I bought this set which had a mfg list price of 4500 I was very critical and wanted a superior picture. The show room display TV was the best that I had seen so I splurged and bought one like the display.
Even if the new bulb restores the TV to workable order, I do not want to be saddled with a TV that is noted as having very poor performance and I am not sure if a photograph submitted to Sony will be sufficient to make the Sony replacement offer to kick in.
As I mentioned in a previous post, 50% (1vs2) hdmi ports do not work.

A simple replacement of a new 60 still creates problems because the KDS60A2000 that I have was purchased with a optional stand shaped to fit the A2000. That stand will not be appropriate for the new Sony so I will have to find another stand that is more appropriate to hold D*, Blu Ray, Denon AVR, HDDVD. Can any one suggest a appropriate stand? Also I have a stand that is shaped to fit the present TV that holds my surround speaker. With a new flat panel TV, is it best to wall mount? If so, some type of cabinet below the TV needs to be incorporated to hold the other toys...suggestions please.
Thanks

I had 4 blinks that was covered by my extended warrrantee. The technician took apart a whole bunch of stuff including the whole back of the set so I am unsure of what he did.....but it was more than pulling out the fan.

There's a section on how to repair the OB and it gives instructions on how to take apart the TV with pictures provided. It might show you how the fan is supposed to be installed.

I've got the Sony SXRD KDS60A2000, and the bulb just went out... It's been 4 years and 7 months (7 months outside of my 4 year extended warranty)

Trying to figure out what to do...

1) Buy a bulb? If I decide to do this, where's the best place to buy, and what brand should I be buying (Osram, Philips, Aftermarket, etc...). Also, do I go bare bulb and install it in the housing myself, or go with the preinstalled in the housing?

2) Get a new television set? Is there such a thing as a "good" SXRD, or are all of the units a ticking time bomb for optical block and/or green blob type issues? If it's an eventuality, then perhaps I should just suck it up and get a new set.

3) A question really... How does this Sony trade-in program work for people experiencing the Optical Block issue? What are the eligibility requirements? How do they recover your old set (or do they)? Is there anyway I can make this program work for me?

Thanks everyone!
Just my humble opinion, but if you are not experiencing the green blob yet, take a chance on a 125.00 bulb. My optical block did go out and was replaced under warranty a little over a year ago. I had already replaced the bulb, and , oh i hate to say this... (crossing my fingers.....), it is still working very well.....How long will it work...I don't know. Somebody posted just a few posts back about getting a 125.00 bulb. When I replaced mine, (with a Sony FWIW) it was in the housing and was, very easy to do. One tip the optical block tech guy gave me was to keep the back of the set clean and as dust free as possible, so every couple of months, I unplug the set for about 20-30 mins, then using a combo of the vacuum and some compressed gas duster, i give it a thorough dusting/vacuuming. I do not remove the bulb for this but I do open the bulb compartment, and dust it with the gas duster. This is the reason I unplug the set, to cool off the bulb, so the cold gas doesn't crack it. Anyway, some may disagree, if their situation is different, but I say keep it running as long as its working. Soon enough I'll have to plunk down some more cash for an up to date flat screen.

Just checked on Amazon and see the sony bulb and housing for about 65.00!!

1) I would go with what mahdlokg advised. Buy the bulb and replace it. I bought mine off of EB and it came with the housing. For roughly $100 you'll have a brand new set. As long as you are still happy with the picture it puts out then I wouldn't worry about a new set. If and when the OB does start to go then that's the time to start thinking of a new set.

2)The OB problem was with the old Sony sets, not the new ones. Especially since they discontinued those types of sets and went with LCD.

3) It seems in a lot of cases, replacing the bulb can cause the OB problem. I know after I replaced the bulb, in about six or seven months I started to get the green tint. Whether it was caused by the new bulb or not, who knows, but it is quite a coincidence. To get in on the replacement program you have to start having a problem with the tinting or a color blob. I had a green tint throughout the picture that I could not get remove. All you have to do is contact the Sony team, either by email or on Facebook(Sarah Kepler) or by phone. They will request a picture of the problem along with some other information. You get to keep the old set and do with it what you wish. The whole process takes less than a month to get your new set.

Thanks for your replies... Yes, I ended up pulling the trigger on a new bulb from Amazon (thanks for the link mahdlokg)...

How long is Sony's program for replacing devices with the OB problem? I assume it won't be indefinitely...

Again, I am not sure I am getting the sense of whether this OB problem is an eventuality (i.e., a ticking time bomb that will happen eventually, it's just a matter of when it happens...not if it happens), or if it is possible to have a "good" unit...

I appreciate the replies. However, I have searched through repair manuals and guides and there are no pictures on which way the lamp fan is installed.

How about this? Can somebody that still owns this style/model set please look in the back for me and just tell me? With the television off, get behind it on the corner with the lamp and have a flashlight in hand. Shine the flashlight in on that corner and you will see the lamp fan behind all the plastic of the back of the TV and the shroud that holds the fan. The fan itself is about 6" in diameter. Looking at the fan, what do you see? You will most likely be able to about half of it. Is it all black - fan blades and center? Do you see any blue lettering on the center of the fan? This will determine which way the fan goes back in.

If you search on amazon.com for "sony 883586031" you will see a picture of the replacement fan and see why I am asking about the blue lettering.

Thank you for your help.

Two options for replacement...

KDL-55EX500 for $200.00
KDL-60EX720 for 1,075.00

How close are they in picture quality?
Which one should I choose if I don't care about 3D?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

As far as I know there is no time given for when Sony's program will end. I'm assuming it will end when they stop receiving calls on these sets. It is possible that you won't have the OB problem at all.

The ex500 is ccfl lcd and is a great set.

The ex720 is led great @ 2d but too much crosstalk for an entry level 3d.

Other than that both are good solid 2d sets.

Is the 60EX720 worth the extra money for the 5" difference?

I would really hate to lose those 5" after having a 60" for so long.

Thanks for your help.

oops...Linky would be nice. Should be 4 images. Anyway...infamous yellow stain? I notice how more people in the picture on my set are now yellowish/orange. Especially in the top 1/3 of my screen. Thoughts? Take it up with Sony? It is a KDS-55A2000. This forum has been such a godsend with regard to this set..Thanks.

Bulb came packaged in formed styrofoam with what looked like generic bulb installation instructions... No glossy retail box... Just a bulb in a box (though certainly well protected)...

I was concerned with the make of the bulb... There were no "in your face" markings indicating the brand, but the connector did have the Sony logo stamped on it... So it may in fact be a Sony OEM'ed bulb (or at least a Sony connector!)...

Installation was easy and flawless... TV display was nice and bright... The bulb lasted all night (4-5 hours of viewing)... While lasting "all night" is short of impressive...at least I did not get a bulb that blew out in the first hour as some have reported...

I am optimistic that this bulb will last a while...but only time will tell...
