A2. There are at least two places you can send your optical block for rebuilding. See my web site (link in my signature) for details.

Thanks for the quick response. So it is indeed the OB? Do you happen to know what part # I need? I searched TSM's website but I didn't see anything specifically for the A2000.

It's listed on the TSM site as "in stock" for $341. A rebuild of your current optical block is listed at $299. John Breton also does rebuilds (I believe for $249 on that model).

So...from I have read it sounds like it's the optical block going out.
First Q - this just randomly went bad...any chance it randomly goes away? The set will be used for occasional use only.
Second Q - Where can I buy a new OB/send mine in to get fixed?

No, it won't go away, it will get worse.

You can get a rebuilt optical block, but IMO, spending more than $150 on this tv which has already proven unreliable as advertised is a gamble I am not willing to take.

I'm about to install a new Philips lamp in my 50A2000. This TV is on its third optical block, and has slight green blob issues on this OB as well. I understand heat is a major factor in development of green blob issues. Other than obvious settings like Cooling and Power Saving, are there any adjustments, such as iris or brightness, that can be turned down to reduce heat damage on the OB from the fresh lamp?
I don't think settings like iris, brightness, and other electronic settings, like "Vivid" have any effect on the amount of light/heat that hits the optical filters or liquid crystal panel, so, no, there is not much you can do. The new lamp is also likely to accelerate the degradation process, as the intensity of the light/heat may be up to 2x or more an old lamp.

Unless you already purchsed the bulb, don't waste your money. Once the degradation begiss and the coatings on the OB lens start deteriorating, it's a slippery slope into junks ville.

Well, that's bad news indeed. The greenish tint is on a couple of the screen edges, and while it was bad enough to qualify for the replacement program, it's not so bad that its objectionable on most material. The set resides in a spare room now, so I was hoping I could nurse it through one final lamp change.

The longer you wait, the less Sony will probably offer you for a replacement. Seems people aren't as good as an offer as Sony used too give. The green tint is only going to get worse, believe me, I had the green tint on my set. If you can afford it, I suggest you get in on a replacement set ASAP. Even if you don't want the set, you can always sell it.

Better hit them up now. Pressure and copies if bills will help.

When I said "qualified I meant I already have a replacement, a 60EX700 that ran me like $400 (for the larger screen) almost two years ago. I am lucky enough that this, my 3rd green-hazed OB, has such a slight problem that its entirely watchable. Still quite a beautiful set, actually.

I've turned on Power Saving and the high speed fan setting. I'll leave it that way for a few months. Hopefully that will be sufficient to avoid new green haze.

I think that is about all you can do.

Keep us posted on how long it lasts.

My 60" SXRD has a terrible yellowing now. Seems like it's a common issue. I got this thing 6 years ago now, I've got to imagine it's too late to get anything out of Sony for the difficulties?

I've been going through this thread since I posted my issue. I've sent a message to the sony cares email I found on the defective sony tv FB page, so I'll try and keep you guys updated on what I hear. That should give everyone a good idea of what they are currently offering.

Keep emailing them back with "I bought Sony for quality, longevity, etc'. The more you reply with you are a long time sony customer, etc. the better deal you will get. I just got a 55EX640 for $730. The lowest I could find the TV online was $1200. So you may get something off, but don't look to get a free tv.

I'm not looking for a free TV, but I've been considering replacing my SXRD with a newer flat screen. The screen is so yellow it really bothers me when I'm watching it. If Sony is going to offer me a decent deal on one of their TVs, I'd consider going with them. Some people on here have received pretty good offers on nice TVs.

When I spent close to $3k on this TV I was doing so with the understanding that I was buying a long lasting high quality TV.
Yeah.l that's what I kept telling them.

The days of TVs lasting 10 years are over.

The only offer I received was for the KDL60EX645 for $965 + local taxes. Is this a good replacement or should I push for a higher quality model?

The lowest price I found on the 60HX645 was $1498 (Dell.com), so it's not a bad offer. It has 4.5 stars out of 5 on Amazon with 38 reviews. Here's the CNET review: http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/sony-kdl-60ex645/4505-6482_7-35432724.html

There's no harm in asking for the price on a higher quality model. Give it a try.

Yea I checked out the cnet review, seems like a pretty good TV and at pretty nice discount.

As far as higher quality, it seems like the HX850 is going to be the alternative, but it's not available in 60", which is what I'd like to stay with. Am I missing any TVs in Sony's 60" offerings which might be higher end instead of mid level.

Decent price. Next up 60" model is close to $5k. Many 55" but only 1 60" I could find.

Purchased my 60A2000 in Dec 2006. Color has always looked great to me. Has very slight green tint on black & white programming, but has been like that since it was new. Cannot see the green at all on color programming. Have been getting the bulb warning on and off for the last couple of years. But I have been afraid to replace because that seems to trigger a lot of problems on sets that previously looked fine.

I finally checked my bulb hours tonight and I am at 15,470. I consider myself lucky, but I have also always been very careful about not cycling the TV on and off frequently. I have also had it in power saving mode since day one.

When I get a new bulb, I will probably use the high altitude setting so the fan cools the bulb more. I am thinking I will need to get a new bulb soon.

Anyone know what happens when the bulb finally blows? Any risk of damage to the TV? I would rather have the spare bulb and wait until the original bulb blows instead of replacing bulb now and risk that the new bulb will cause color problems. But if a blown bulb will damage the TV, I will have to make a decision of which chance I want to take.

Thanks

When my bulb went out, the TV just didn't have a picture. It was a black screen. It wasn't like there was a "pop" or a small explosion or a fire. It just stopped working. I got the warning like two weeks before the bulb actually went out. I ordered the bulb from Ebay right after I got the warning so I had it on hand when the bulb went out.
It's not typical for the bulb to blow. They slowly loose there brightness.
Cool, thanks for the info. I think I'll buy a new bulb and wait until the old one goes out before replacing. I'd rather not tempt fate at this point. I think 15k+ hours is pretty good for one of these bulbs. I am sure the picture is dimmer than before, but the change is gradual enough that it still looks pretty good to me. I'm sure when I finally change the bulb I will realize how dim the old one is.
That was my experience as well. I had the warning awhile before, so I ordered a replacement, and eventually the TV powered up the bulb no longer worked.

Once you change the bulb you'll probably notice a pretty significant difference in picture quality.

Hi,
First of all must thank all of you for your collective knowledge. Been lurking since early December when I first started experiencing the green "blob". Thanks to the information I gained here, just finished the "Sony Renewal Process", with a quite satisfactory result.

Details in a nutshell: Orig purch Dec 2006, been through 4 bulbs, the last of which seemed to kick off the problem, did my research here & elsewhere, began the process & was offered a KDL55hx850 for $970 + tax. Best price I could find online was over twice that amount. To be credited over $1000 for a tv over 6 years old was more than fair in my opinion.

I've had the unit for for less than a week now, but so far I am very happy. For that matter, so is my nephew who just received a 60" tv for his college dorm to watch the Patriots win this weekend to go to another Super Bowl (even if everything looks a little green!). Now i just have to figure out why I'm going away to ski country this long w/end to watch the game on a smallish SD tv??????rolleyes.gif

I am in a similar situation with my KDS-60a2000. Just e-mailed Sarah this morning to start the process to see what (if anything) they can do for me. What was your original model? Thanks.

Ok, Sarah responded back (:very quickly - same day), with an offer of KDL-60EX645 for $975+tax. I am considering that. Right now, Amazon has the same set for $1,298, so not a huge discount, but the set is 6 years old. Lots of deals floating around for superbowl, so going to look around a bit before I accept.

I suggest shopping Sony's website and picking out 2 or 3 models that you would be interested in buying and then submitting those models to Sarah. Ask if she can give you a better offer. Also, if the model(s) you really want aren't in stock, tell her you're willing to wait a week or two or more if needed. I would also let her know that they're not giving you a good enough discount, you found Amazon selling it for $1300, that's only a saving of $300.
Here's a CNET review for that model: http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/sony-kdl-60ex645/4505-6482_7-35432724.html Good luck.
Fortunately for me Sony tech replacement of the optical block fixed the green blob problem for me ... remaining nusiance problem is need to replace the bulb to maintain reasonable brightness of the screen ... the first replacement bulb found on line in the $40 range lasted less than a year before screen got dim again ... found a higher tier bulb in the $100 range that so far seems working ... so be careful if you are replacing bulb to fix a brighness issue to buy the higher price one ... the lower price one burns out quickly
