That's cool you had the OB fixed. Is your set under a warranty? I agree with you on the bulb, they should cost around $100, anything half that price I wouldn't trust.

Jeffdi89:===>My original set was the KDS-60A2000, in answer to your question.

Right now, Amazon has the same set for $1,298, so not a huge discount, but the set is 6 years old. Lots of deals floating around for superbowl, so going to look around a bit before I accept.
In my case the discount was more towards $1000, which I thought was more than fair for a set over 6 years old. I would see if they'll sweeten the pot a bit.

Just want to ask a quick question before ordering a new bulb. Has anyone ordered a bare bulb and replaced it or are most ordering the bulb with the housing? BTW I do plan to order the OEM replacement. Thanks.
I ordered and replaced using a bare bulb - worked fine...

Time to beat a dead horse.

I own a dead (green blob) R50XBR1 and a 55A2000 with the same.

I Cannibalized the XBR1 for the SXRD GREEN panel and installed it into the A2000 for the BLUE panel. Aligned the set and nearly have it correct. The left side blue convergence is still off a bit but I'll correct that in short order.

? is.... is the projection lens (NOT the entire optical block) from the XBR1 an upgrade to the A2000 projection lens and are they interchangeable?

?... is there a way to "focus" these sets? I've noticed the final stage of the projection lens can rotate. Is that the focus fine adjustment?

I've searched and searched and I'm challenged to find a list of Service Menu code meanings.

I ordered the bulb with the housing. It wasn't much more and it avoids any problems of getting oil from your hands on the bulb.

Found this video on how to repair the OB and it also shows how to align(focus) the lens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=oP2nNPOjn_Y

This video is on how to repair the green - yellow picture on a SXRD display technology T.V. It involves replacing the SXRD (silicon crystal reflective display) Chip to restore missing blue. The SXRD IC is usually on eBay, just look for"SXRD" or "SXRD211" Used in consumer models: KDS-50A2000 KDS-60A2000 KDS-R50XBR1 KDS-R60XBR1 KDS-55A2000 KDS-55A2010 KDS-55A2020 KDS50A2000 KDS60A2000 KDSR50XBR1 KDSR60XBR1 KDS-50A2020 KDS-60A2020 KDS50A2020 KDS60A2020 KDS50A2010 KDS60A2010 KDS-50A2010 KDS-60A2010 With lamps XL5100 XL5200 XL 5100 5200 May be used in other commercial models also that I am not aware of.

-No difference in lenses that I am aware of.

-Yes, the main lenses turn on extremely fine threads. It's not a converging focus; once it is focused it will cast a sharp image no matter what the distance to the screen is. Generally it shouldn't have to be adjusted. There might be a lockscrew under there to keep it from turning, I can't remember. The trick is to get your hand up in there while the tv is assembled and operating to turn it without leaving fingerprints. It should never have to be turned more than +/-10 degrees or so.

-I've never found a Service Menu decoder. I wouldn't mess with any setting without knowing exactly what it is for and writing down the original setting. If you make a change that causes you to lose the picture you could be screwed.

Thank for all the help folks!

UPDATE: The A2000 is now dead. Boo. Everything was working and the unit worked great on the bench until I reassembled it. Now just a green blinking light, a couple of clicks, and the red light flashes. Its either three, four, or nine blinks depending on which time it powers on.

I've checked all the connectors and tried an alternate lamp as well as a different ballast. I tried known good fans in place of the existing ones. Replaced the thermal fuse and power supply fuse. Hard wired the lamp door. But nothing changes.

All this leads me to think the G board is fried.

Oh well on to better things. I've moved on to salvaging the XBR1 with the optics and pieces and parts from the A2000. I'm concerned about aligning the projector lens with that can tilt adjuster.

BTW, The projector lens for the A2000 is a MUCH larger diameter than the XBR SP1 lens. I dunno if bigger is better but we'll see

Thank again.

This is a follow up on my bulb replacement with the off brand lamp and housing. After over a year, it's still going strong. I have now moved the TV halfway across the country and back again ant it still works like new. I guess I am one of the fortunate ones wit this set. I don't have a strong desire to replace it just yet.
I know the feeling ee these are fine sets when working correctly. My old 50a2000 had one ob replacement early and has been going strong since.

I wonder my odds of getting Sony to pony up a replacement for the r50xbr1 or the 55a2000 at this point would be?

The only way to find out is to contact the Sony team. If you're on Facebook, try Sarah Kepler. Just PM her or leave a message on her page and she'll contact you pretty quickly. The only things you'll need is a picture of the TV showing the problem your having and the sticker from the rear of the TV showing the model #.

I have had the exact same experience with my 50A2000; one bulb replacement and no other issues despite moving in cross country twice. The OTA tuner also works very well.

Sony offered a 55ex640 for $850 for the 55a2000 and a 50ex645 for $550 for the r50xbr1. Do you think that's reasonable?

The lowest price I found online was$1298 for the 55EX640 here's the review from CNET: http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/sony-kdl-55ex640/4505-6482_7-35118063.html

and for the 55EX645 $948 http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/sony-kdl-50ex645/4505-6482_7-35432723.html

I would suggest checking Sony's website and picking out what models you really want and asking if they can give you a deal on those instead.

Update: Called Sony care at 239-245-6410 and got yet another rep.

Now its a NO DEAL because I can't produce a receipt from Circuit City (which no longer exists).

So I'm supposed to have a receipt for a TV bought 7 years ago from a company that no longer exists after getting divorced, married, and moving three times?

That's ridiculous.

So for anyone out there who bought your TV from Circuit City (I bought 3 SXRD's from them) you're SOL on the discounts from Sony if you didn't archive your receipts.
If you paid for this TV by credit card, I think that they would accept your credit card statement showing the purchase. You can obtain this from your credit card company.

Excuse me but the rep you spoke with doesn't know his/her you know what from a hole in the ground. Contact Sarah Kepler on Facebook or anyone from the Sony Team on Facebook. All Sony requires for their replacement program is a picture of your TV with the sticker taken off the back like in the attached picture. If you need a different Sony phone number PM me but I've had pretty good luck contacting them on FB. I've exchanged two TV's that way.

I agree. A receipt for ANYTHING that old is ridiculous. Contacting the bank I use to have (Five Years ago) accessing my bank records and sorting through hundreds of pages of Bank statements fairly negates the discount Sony would offer and exchanges it for my time.

The final offer they've presented is a KDL-55EX640 for $825. With Vizio, Sharp, or LG offering larger television with equivalent or better features, the offer doesn't seem very attractive. I'm not "allowed" to purchase a HX model or a 60" and an EX for the stated price is final. I was told there weren't any HX models available.

I am not on Facebook and would prefer to not be.

??... Any advice for a 55 or larger set currently for a reasonable cost?

The set that I got in exchange was a 55HX850 for $950. That was over a year ago now and newer models are coming out and that's probably why HX models are not in stock to exchange. Try these phone numbers: 239-245-6245(customer service) or 6407(exchange dept.) maybe you can get a better deal. As for the EX model they offered you, the lowest price I found was $1300, so you're saving at least $500.

I'm getting ready to replace my bulb. I'm trying to find the menu that will let me see how many bulb hours I have on this bulb. I have tried going into settings, and I don't see it there. I've tried going into dignostics, but it is telling me "diagnostics not available", so something must need to be set differently. I did this the last time and i remeber after getting to the right menu I had to push a button 19 times to scroll to the bulb hours. If anyone has that post tagged or can provide me that info, I'd sure appreciateit. Thanks.

I've got an update and a question regarding the bulbs everyone has been using lately for replacement. My question is for anyone who has bought an OEM Sony/Phillips bulb recently: has your bulb actually said Phillips on it anywhere? If you're certain you got an OEM replacement, please PM me as to where you ordered yours from and approx. how recently.

I believe (especially after reading quite a few posts here) in getting the real thing as far as bulb replacement goes. I ordered my OEM replacement from newegg recently for just under a 100.00, bucks, which is great. No problem. (Many of you probably remember estimates of 250.00 a bulb when we purchased sets back in the 2005-2006 era.)

Anyway I opened my new bulb package today after going through the approx 1 hour cool down period on my set. The box containing the bulb has a white sticker that does say "Phillips" and "Assemled in the USA". Funny thing is the white label is obviously been placed over another white label, which I have not been successful in peeling off and reading. Now, the brown box that the bulb and housing were packaged in says "Made in Mexico" on the end of the box. The same box as the white label is attached to. Hmmm... newegg also sells generic bulbs and it just has me wondering....

The last bulb I replaced in May 2009 was a Sony bulb, Sony box, and a message saying assembled in the USA with imported parts. I got 10065 hours from that one, and a little under 8000 hours out of the original bulb that came with my set. newegg says I can send it back for a replacement and i asked what made him think the replacement would be any different form this one. He did not have an answer for that one.

Anyway, what I'd really like is an original Sony(Phillips) bulb that says so. Any help appreciated!!!

My fan next to the lamp broke, I just ordered Sony MOTOR, DC FAN SFF21C-C-NP. Anyone know how to replace it, I opened the back and its in a very inconvenient spot. I appreciate the help!
My fan behind the bulb just went bad as well. I think there are 7 or 8 screws that hold the back on the TV. 1 of the screws is inside the bulb compartment. From there I removed the metal bracket (2screws) and unhooked 3 wired connections to the cage that hold the fan. I believe there are 2 screws holding the fan cage to the back of the bulb compartment. The cage will then slide out enough to unscrew the 2 screws holding the cage together. Now there are 3 clips on the cage you need to unhook and the 2 halves will pull apart. Take note of the orientation of the fan as I didn't and now I don't know if the new fan in facing the right way. I have mine sucking hot air out of the back of the tv pulling the heat away from the bulb. Pull the old fan out and take the 4 rubber pieces off the corners and snap them on the new fan. Install everything back..

Can anybody tell me which way the bulb fan should be blowing air? Should it be pulling air away from the bulb and out the back of the TV or should it be blowing air at the bulb and pulling in air from the back of the TV?

TIA to anybody that can check their KDS TV and let me know smile.gif

You might try checking out the photos or the video on these websites to see which way the fan should be facing.

Thanks aztony, I hit both of those links up yesterday during my google fest. The video shows the enclosure around the 3 and 5 minute mark but you can't see the fan and the other link doesn't show a picture of this enclosure at all (TV is a slightly different model) Thanks for trying to help me though smile.gif

I guess most people have moved on from this TV by now but mine still works great. Had the optical block changed out under warranty years ago, had the bulb fan go out a few days ago (easy fix) just not sure I have it blowing the right way and am only on my 3rd bulb. Still runs like a top!
