The HD cable box will not increase the quality of the HD channels - at least if you use a digital (HDMI) connection for it. It WILL increase the number of HD channels that you can receive, however.

I just acquired a 50 A2000, and am very impressed. I am watching 12 monkeys in HD now, off a XBOX360 with the HD DVD Player.
I have Component connectors as my only source. The Receiver hosts the Component Switching from my HD PVR and my XBOX 360 HD. That is all I use, so the one TV connection works for me.
I see no issues with the quality at all. There is NO GREEN, as I have been reading about. I set it up for night time viewing with the CNET recomendations - thanks for that post! I use the Normal during the day - and will program a macro for my Harmony XBOX360 Remote Controller to do this for me...hopefully!
-- I haven't programmed my remote, but I will post if the new release supports the 50 natively, or if I have to use the 60 version for my remote device setup.--
I have installed all kinds of HDTV's for friends and family - and this is by far the best for fixed viewing I have seen - Ever! I like Plasmas for multidirectional viewing, and am excited about the new backlit LCDs soon to come - but for now, this is the best TV for the price on the market. Especially if you get a real good deal - -

The other is that when the TV is off and the lights are on in the room, there seems to be a glare/spot in the middle of the TV as if it's collecting the light at that area. It's not a huge concern since the TV's not on, but I was wondering if it might be a screen anomaly.

I see the same thing on my 50A2000. Although I am curious as to the cause, it is totally invisible when the set it in use, so it does not bother me. I suspect these sets use some sort of treatment or diffraction grating on the screen to even out the brightness across the screen (so you don't see the bright spot in the middle like some older sets), and I assume the spot in the middle is an artifact of that treatment.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who has noticed it I did the no-source input test mainly because I'd heard that's how you can pick up the clouding image on the LCD screens, and low and behold, there seems to be some minor discoloration around the edges and in the center of the screen. It's not noticeable at this point when I actually have a source running, but I am going to test that a bit more in the future.

I programmed my set to skip over the empty inputs, and my Harmony remote is programmed to go directly to the appropriate input, so between the two, I never even see a blank screen with no input. I don't really consider it relevant to any normal usage scenario, so I'm not really worried.

If you adjust the white balance in the User Menu, yes, it would only apply to the DVD input. You could then apply the same settings to each of your other inputs. Alternatively, you could do the adjustment in the Service Menu / Panel / White Balance (setting the R, G, B; Gain and Bias which are items 3 to 8 respectively) and these settings would apply to all inputs.

Thanks for the tip! The other day I input the CNET settings for normal TV, but I did not realize that these settings do not apply to my DVD or HDMI (HTPC with BeyondTV PVR software) inputs. Not I know how I can adjust them all together.

12 Monkeys was one of the worst HD DVD's I've seen (not that its terrible, just relatively speaking). If you like that one, you will be blown away watching titles like Poseidon or Ant Bully. World Trade Center and Serenity were pretty good as well.

I watched POTC Dead Mans Chest last night through normal 480p and was blown away! I almost can't imagine a better picture, so i'm very anxious to get a blue ray player and some great transfered blue ray dvd's.

not at all...i realize that Sony recommends an 18.5" stand height (their stands are this height) and that they recommend that you sit with your eyes in the middle of the screen...but, remember, not all couches/chairs are the same height either...i have no issues at all with this height...i sit approx 13 feet from my kds-60a2000...one of the great things of Lcos technology versus dlp is that i see little difference up/down or side to side...i did the up/down look before i bought the stand and there's no difference in a couple inches...matter of fact, what sold me on the Sony and Lcos is that when kids lay on the floor and/or play video games from the floor looking up -- there's no difference in picture...

and with 24.5" height, you have plenty of room for your components in the below shelving...

enjoy...

I custom built a tv stand for my 60A2000 and it is 28 inches high. I sit about 12 feet from my set and it looks perfectly fine. I wanted mine a little higher to both get it up away from small children and dogs and to keep light glare from my windows to a minimum. Moving my head up or down, sitting or standing, I notice no loss in pq or brightness.

I agree. I have a Wood Technology MGV-63 stand (in order to fit a large center speaker on the middle shelf) that is 23.5 " high. I have the 55" and watch from a conventional couch about 10-11 feet away and it works great. I have found that this tv is more sensitive to a high angle - standing and looking DOWN on the tv. It is much less sensitive to looking UP ( or from the sides) at the screen

I made a similar comment a few months ago...it is by far the highest quality SD DVD I've seen and looked fabulous on my 50A2000. It was better quality than several HD DVD's I've viewed. In fact, I would guesstimate that 25-50% of the HD DVD's I've viewed were not as good as POTC DMC. That's OK, because the technology is still fairly young.

Don't get your hopes up too high about BR or HD DVD using POTC as a reference; its really all about the transfer and the master. Some are great, but some will make you wonder if you accidentally slipped a SD DVD in your player (and a poor one at that).

Here's a decent site for reviews of Blu-Ray and HD DVD's:

Sorry; off topic.

First time posting...
Okay, I've tried to read through this thread but it is just too much...I have a question. I know (or at least think I know) that the a2000's only officially support htpc through a VGA port, but I was reading earlier that people thought you might be able to use the HDMI port on the tv to go DVI from pc to HDMI on tv. Has anything more been tested/found on this? Is there another way to hook up a pc other than the VGA? If not, how is the performance through the VGA? Lastly, I will be playing games (xbox, wii, ps3, and computer) and was wondering how game play was on these. Any lag? I apologize because I know that these questions have been answered plenty of times throughout the thread but I can't find them. Thanks in advance!

Ryan

I have my mac hooked up using a DVI > HDMI cable, I haven't noticed any problems yet.
Awesome! I have a macbook too and that is what I was planning on hooking up.

Thanks!
Ryan,

I have found the best solution for my macbook pro is to use it with the lid closed. In order to do this, you will need an external keyboard AND mouse so that you can wake it from sleep with the lid closed. I also use a little app called smc fan control that allows me to increase the speed of the fans so that i don't have to worry about it over heating with the lid closed:

make sure you turn "Overscan" off in the display preferences.

Got the 55A2000 last night and stayed up until 11pm watching various DVDs on it. OMG, this set is amazing, and I don't even have HD on it yet!

SD looks pretty tolerable... not too bad. DVDs look awesome, even on my 8-year-old 480i Pioneer DVD player using a composite video cable!

I can't wait to get HD hooked up and spend some time tweaking it to my taste.

I'm pretty glad that getting a Samsung DLP from Amazon didn't work out (twice)... I would have never got the Sony.

Congrats taco lover! I can't (okay i can) imagine having the 55" let alone the 60". I got the 50" and the wife said "It's too big" when she got home from work...sorry about her luck, i'm keeping it!

Throw in POTC Dead Mans Chest if you want some real WOW factor. I used a 480p dvd player through component video and it was amazing!

Vassillios,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Your help will be appreciated when my tv comes in. Anyone care to chime in as to how gaming is on this thing?

I have a PS3 connected to my 50" A2000. Gran Turismo HD looks amazing! I have no problems gaming on the SXRD.

We've actually been holding off watching Dead Man's Chest until we got the TV, so I can't wait any longer!

Maybe I'm reading too much into your note, but, you say you get this message when you select DTS on the PS3. Do you not get it if you play the HD-DVD and select a different audio format? If so, isn't it pretty obvious that your PS3 is sending an audio signal over the HDMI when you switch it to DTS?

First off, this only happens when I select DTS. When I go with Dolby Digital I get no message.

The thing is, it does indeed seem obvious to me that the PS3 is sending an audio signal, but if so, why does no sound come out of the A2000 speakers? Even when I have the sound set to Dolby Digital (or whatever) I get no sound. So this brings me back to my question I guess: Why is the tv giving me this message? The PS3 is not sending audio to the tv speakers, yet the tv THINKS it is being sent a signal. I think I only found this out because the tv cannot decode DTS.

Weird.

Sony is coming out with new special SXRD cushions that you sit on, to compensate for higher stands.

amiles46, jimmyv:

Thanks for the feedback, I think this was a lot easier of a reply than what john18 posted.....

Glad to hear that you guys are enjoying your A2000, if I do get one, which I can't seem to wait any longer, I would have to install it above a fireplace, I think the distance would be around 36 to 40" to the center of the screen, would this be any problem from like 9 feet away from sitting in the couch in height? ( Looking up at the screen ).
jimmyv: Do you use digital or hd cable on your a2000? Thanks!

I have been playing my PS3 on this tv for a month or so. It is fantastic. I agree that Gran Turismo HD looks great. Some of the other games are also pretty amazing. Those of you who own a PS3 can download previews and playable demos of new games. I suggest you do this because some of the new games in HD actually seem to show off this tv in a whole new way.

I agree - the look down when you are standing up close is different than when you look at the mid-line or from below...but as you move closer away from the set, this goes away...standing at a distance - across the room or farther has limited impact on the height - either eye level or mid-line...(i'm 6' tall for reference)...

i have a Dell 8400 media center pc connected via dvi to hdmi on input 6...it attaches to an nvidia geforce 6800 256mb video card...on this card i use the nvidia control panel tools to set the signal input of the display - 480p, 720p, 1080p, etc...and then i use the display size settings to set the resolution to fit the screen...in my case, i make the setting 1080p and reduce the screen size from 1920X1240 to something under that to fit the screen...but you need to check on your video card, it's toolsets and play around...it definitely works great on dvd to hdmi...a lot of folks rationalize that the reason SONY states to use the vgi input is because they don't want to have to deal with customer support issues related to all the variations of video card settings, etc...

The TV was delivered about three hours ago and it was 15 degrees outside. How much longer do I have to wait before I can turn it on?

I'm glad I only got the 50 because it looks huge in my tiny living room.

As with most electronics, you should probably wait an hour or so to avoid condensation issues.

Also, don't worry about it being too big, tv's shrink the longer you own them !
