Does anyone else notice this problem? I press mute and it shows the "mute" display for a few seconds in the bottom left corner and then it disappears. I use the TV speaker for regular cable and have optical out to my receiver for HDTV (digital cable tuner) channels. I only have to press mute and turn on the receiver - works fine!

I am also thinking of purchasing one of these sets and i want to be able to take full advantage of the 1080p. I'm getting an hd-dvd player capable of 1080p. Here is my noob question. Are all hd-dvd's 1080p? If not, how do I tell the difference?

So far as I know, they all are. There might be some obscure titles that are 720p, but everything I've bought or rented is 1080p and it says on the case..

I dialed the color down to zero...no pink or green haze. Black looked BLACK on an unused input. I asked them if they would trade me..of course they said NO. They said keep the heat on Sony and eventually they will cave in, and swap my set out. The hoops we have to jump though to get this done is ridiculous though. I called the office of my servicer today. He said 'call Sony'. Sony told me to call him. He said my set is not really 'defective' since I can watch it. It just has 'picture quality issues'. When black is glowing navy blue, and black and white picture is green and pink hazed I call that defective. He did say he will contact, Sony and they will probably demand he swap the OB again. Oh and get this..he offered to put my original OB back in since it's not as bad as new one! GEEZE.

I'm sorry that your OB switch didn't go well, but I can't say that I'm surprised. I don't know if I have heard of anyone on this forum having long term success after an OB replacement. Now that the weather has gotten warmer, my green and pink issues have faded to the point that the nonuniformity does not show up in normal viewing material. Based on your experience, it seems that it would be best for me to stick with this OB unless it noticeably degrades.

That's weird. Mine says "Muting" and never disappears.

Well Sony finally came through for me. As I feared, they first offered me a refubished A-2000. I said that was not acceptable. She said they could give me an A-2020 if I faxed my receipt to them. I was expecting they would want extra cash, since they usually use the price you paid originally, vs. the Sonystyle price today. The price I paid in September was 200 less than the Sonystyle price on the A-2020 today. I told the lady I have bought about 11 grand of Sony products since 1999, which is the truth. She then told me they would go ahead and send me a new 2020 at no extra charge. That is fair, and after all is said and done I think Sony treated me right. Now I will be moving to the A-2020 thread. Fingers crossed that I get a set that works right this time.

Congratulations Alan! Way to go! Do you have to ship your A2000 back to them or is your dealer taking care of things?

Hi,
I have October 2006 built model, connected to Denon 1930CI and Yamaha RX-V1700 (all HDMI connections). I am pretty happy with the PQ with the exception of greenish skin tones, especially in the darker scenes. In bright scenes it's usually not an issue. The problem is more pronounced with DVD content. In addition, gray-toned objects become greenish in darker scenes. Grass color is also off sometimes, becoming yellowish-green. Several members reported that this issue has been successfully resolved with professional calibration. I realize limitations of DIY, but any suggestions how to tweak this problem without a professional?

The trucking company that brings the new tv takes the old one away. Supposed to happen in about 7-10 days.

What color temp are you using now? I have noticed that WARM 2 seems to aggravate the greenish issues. You could try playing with your white balance controls in the Custom Mode. Once you set them for a given color temp, they transfer to that color temp in all picture modes. You should get the AVIA dvd, or similar to best adjust this. If still not happy, I would see if UMR, the calibrator on here, comes to your area. It seems he is top notch at getting these sets tweaked to their maximum potential.

I apologize if this has been covered, but SEARCH isn't turning anything up for me....

I have a 60A2000 connected via HDMI to an SA8300 HD-DVR. The box is obviously set to pass-through the native resolution of the broadcast. More than half the time now, when I switch channels between a 1080i source or a 720p source, there will be some brief blinking (re-scaling) which I'm assuming is normal, but then the screen will go to white snow, or noise.

I thought it must be the 8300 at first, but when I turn the power off and back on, the white snow remains. To get the picture back, I'm forced to either turn the TV off and on, or switch inputs.

Does anyone have experience with this phenomenon? Ideas?

Thanks.

I would set the SA8300 to output 1080 only, this will eliminate all the above behavior.

I also observed the blinking when changing from different sources. My problem was the sometimes the receiver would never adjust and screen would remain blank. Solution was to set the box to 1080i. Cable company said this wouldnt impact picture of SD. Did fix the problem, arent sure if they are correct re not affecting the quality of the SD channels.

This is a known problem (search through the High-Def recorders forum). It started for me the last time they updated the software. For now I just cycle through the inputs.

The software in the 8300 is total garbage. Lots a problems and every time they update the software only a few are fixed and new ones are added. FIOS just started offering service in my area, I think my long term fix is just to dump Cablevision and their 8300 and switch to FIOS.

As a note, you do not want to force the 8300 to 1080i. This DOES impact how 720p channels and standard def channel look.

I force my 8300 to 1080i and it is fine!

Thanks for the tip, I'll check out that thread as well!

I'm actually on my 3rd 8300 box already, due to issues with picture drop-out and loss of sound output through the optical out. Quite a pain....I'm of the same opinion that I don't want to force the 8300 to 1080i because I think the scaler in the A2000 would do a better job with the 720p feed. However, I'll give it a shot tonight just to see how big the difference is, because I'm already tired of switching inputs every time I switch between Discovery HD & ESPN!!

You could also consider using component cables. I'd rather do that than run 1080i.

Well, I've got in forcing 1080i now, and it's really not as bad as I remembered. I'll wait to pass judgment until a sporting event is on, as that's supposedly where the biggest difference will be.

I'm just biding my time until FIOS arrives

FIOS shows to be in Florida. Are they just not available in your area?

Just a caution about FiOS roll-out. There have been lots of areas (Buffalo, NY is one example) where they have rolled it out as a Internet/Phone technology but aren't (yet) offering TV. So FiOS TV may not be as near as you may think!

If you consider "fine" the result of having the 8300 upscale and interlace a 720p feed and having the TV then have to deinterlace it. You also lose the A2000 processing of 480i feeds, which definitely affects quality of a standard def channel.

It's not fine. The 8300 doesn't work right, keep complaining until they fix it.

What do you mean:
1) My cable company does not know to manage software upgrades for the 8300.
2) My cable company's signal quality is so marginal, that my 8300 is constantly malfunctoning.
3) I want my 8300 to do more than it, or it's operating software (SARA/Passport) was designed to do.

If it is 1) or 2), you are right. Complain.

If it is 3): change your expectations or your TV service provider.

I posted this in the A2020 thread, but it's also relevant here. Hope nobody minds.

How are the vertical viewing angles on the A2000?

I'm STRONGLY considering getting one, but I'd have to raise it up so that the center of the screen (not the entire TV, just the screen) is about 8-10" above eye level. Is that okay?

I only sit about 7' away from the TV, so 8-10" is significant (in terms of what direction I'm looking).

Yeah, they're in select parts of the Tampa Bay area right now, such as Temple Terrace....but not yet where I am. Neighboring counties (Pasco & Pinellas) have also gotten a pretty extensive FIOS roll-out, which does include the TV service. Hopefully within a year or two, my area will be covered.

BHN where I am only recently picked up ESPN2HD and still has no deal with NFL Network! I'm a football nut and this is most frustrating.

Sounds like this may have been discussed recently regarding the SA8300 but I have frequently noticed problems with sound fading in and out in addition to having the audio seem out of sync with the video. I noticed it more frequently on my Toshiba LCD but have also seen it on my A2000. I have the SA8300 from Cablevision (world's most useless cable company) connected via HDMI. Is there anything that can be done for this or is it just one of the many flaws have I have read about regarding the SA8300?
