Just like sex. Often the build-up to the climax is more fun and exciting than the end results (i.e. a smeared image all over the TV screen)!

Yes, 4:3 with two black bars on either side -- completely useless and unnatural for a 16:9 1080p lcd. Who would watch anything from a pc/laptop at that resolution? The only purpose it'd serve would be to foment disgust (sony: we have a racehorse here almost as good as our top racehorse... what to do??? I know... let's hobblie it!!). You'd be better off w/ full 16:9 720p and pretend that resolution didn't exist.

Hopefully, I can get dvi from my laptop; and hopefully, game mode is either there or there are comparable settings or isn't needed. I'm speculating that the Bravia engine in these v2500's may be upgraded s2000 engines and not Bravia Pro's without drc 2.5. Do the s2000's (and xbr1's) have game mode? Has anyone gamed on these? Perhaps the vga 1080p is missing because they just upgraded the Bravia engine and didn't bother tweaking that part. I'm going to download an s2000 manual out of curiousity...

Let us know what you find out! I'm also very curious about the game mode

The S2000 manual: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/fil...KDL46S2000.pdf

The XBR1 manual: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/fil...-32-40XBR1.pdf

The XBR1 has Game Mode; the S2000 does not. On a quick skim, the V2500's appear to be upgraded S2000's (even the functionality in the manuals seem similar) with the XBR2/3's as upgraded XBR1's. So, the suspicion that the Bravia engine in the V2500's is an upgraded S2000 engine, and that the Bravia Pro is wholly different, is strengthened... but still just idle speculation.

I have no idea why Game Mode doesn't come with the S2000's, if it's not needed on those, or if it's just something that would be good but is saved for the top-of-the line XBR1. Does anyone have any gaming experience with these or know? Same question of course applies to the V2500's vs the XBR2/3's. In any case, it does appear that Sony is positioning the V2500's as their 2nd string LCD's. What'll be interesting though, is if the engine in the V2500's is entirely different than the XBR2/3's... will that be a bad or good thing? Outside of basic panel capablities, we may have to wait till we can really test these models firshand.

Here's a link to the new Euro 1080p W2000 series to be released in October, and which I think is comparable to our V2500's: http://www.sonycenter.lu/news/bravia-full-hd.php. I couldn't find a manual for it though. They also have an X2000 series which is comprable to our XBR2/3's and was out some time before them.

So I decided to go straight to the source and find out when these damn TVs were shipping. I hit the Sony site for a little online chat with a robot. Here's what I learned....

Quote:
Alvin_ > Hi Admiral. Welcome to Sony Online Support. I'm Alvin. I'll be glad to assist you with the shipping information of KDL40V2500 TV.

AdmiralAwesome1 > Hi Alvin. Thanks for your help. When can I expect to see the KDL 40V2500 in stores?

Alvin_ > Admiral, it is expected to be shipped on/available at September 2006.

AdmiralAwesome1 > Do you know when in September? Tomorrow is September 1.

Alvin_ > Admiral, I'm sorry; I do not have exact information about shipping the TV. You can contact the SonyStyle at 1-877-865-7669 for assistance. They'll be able to assist you better.

Alvin_ >
Hours of operation:
8:00AM to Midnight (ET), Monday - Friday
10:00AM to 7:00 PM (ET), Saturday - Sunday

AdmiralAwesome1 > Ok. Thank you.

Basically, I learned nothing. I'm at work, so I haven't had a chance to call SonyStyle, but I imagine their answer would be the same as the one you get on the website---September 30. Ugh. Maybe they'll show in retail stores sooner. Hopefully...

BB should have them around sept. 17th so some stores might have them earlier or later

Mid Spetember seems to be the consistant theory... BTW has anyone checked out the specs on the new 46" & 52" Sharp? Curious to see how it stacks up to the 2500. And would be interesting if we could find the manual to really compare....

The sony USA website lists the color as "Black" although all of the pictures on it's website show it as a grey / silvery colour. If this TV looks the same as the UK 40V2000 they are going to sell like hot cakes. Selling them in grey would be a huge mistake on Sony's part.

I was in Video Only the other day and a salesman told me that they were not going to carry the v2500, but they would be carrying the v2010, which is the black version of the v series. Take it for what it's worth. Just a salesman on the floor.

Interesting, PDX. I, personally, would prefer the Silver model. rconn, i believe, is holding out for a black version.

how big a chain is Video Only? I know there's one in SF where I am.

Jersey--where did you hear Sept. 17 for BB?

Not very big, but they consistently offer the best brick and mortar prices here in portland. The also claim to be a "specialty store." Same salesman told me they weren't carrying the xbr2, only the xbr3, which they weren't stocking yet. I'd never heard of a 2010. Closer to European model numbers. I like the black a lot better too, but not a piano black.
i noticed the same thing with my Video Only. The store itself was pretty beat up, but it's literally across the street from Circuit City and is usually a few hundred dollars less expensive. They also offer rather inexpensive warranties.

I'll definitely head over there today and see what they say.

And this information is credible?
while checking the sony site on the 462500 series, as of today 08/31/06 they took off the manual which was posted yesterday. Woot !!!!! also they took it off on the 40" version.

All signs point to mistakes in manual... ( so I hope ) regarding the vga lack of 1920 resolution.

http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTE...me=specs&var2=

there is still hope for this set.
The guy from sony said that the 2500 was bumped back 2 weeks to the 15th of Oct., he didn't know why.
Turock as in Oct 15 ?? are u serious. well so far on site it's listed as september. if October, possible manaul had error. hehehe. although it would suck to wait till october.

No... I like our model too... dark gray... but a little darker would be ideal. The Euro W2000 really does hit it just right: http://www.sonycenter.lu/news/bravia-full-hd.php

It's confusing, but in Euroland, the X2000 is comparable to our XBR2/3's; the W2000 (due out in Oct.) to our V2500's; and their upcoming V2500 is a 720p set... if it'll even be released... they also have a fairly new V2000 that's also 720p.

I'll be interesting to compare our V2500 to their W2000. lyris, who comes around this thread from time to time is well known on the euro avforums.com... he knows about this stuff.
1080 I was just noting how it's not there at the specs page. while xbr2/3 all have manuals there. It was also there yesterday. again. odd.
lcd1080: no change. Still 1400 x 1050 for top vga resolution. I doubt it's a misprint.

On the minor plus side though (for me), I ordered an advanced port replicator for my inspiron that provides a dvi output. I never knew that (or had a use anyway). So if I can get 1080p from dvi->hdmi in 1:1 (as we certainly still expect!), then I'm still actively interested.

The thing is that we should probably consider this a whole new 1080p set w/ different processing altogether from the xbr2/3's. I think the S2000 threads may give us a better sense of the processing for this set... I'm going to check them out. The different processing _may_ be a good thing. It better not be weak or have any more significant gotcha's because this set is minimally meeting the criteria which made me interested in the first place.

Only a beuracratic corporation would take the ball to first and inches from the goal line and... what... not even kick a field goal but punt? It always astonishes... we'd do a far better job directing these products.
would the processing be in line say with the xbr1 models or s2000. I know the xbr1 was awesome on SD as well pretty decent on games and HD. this lack of info is getting on my nerves.

Oh I see. The thing I'm not getting is why Sony would put the V2500 manual on-line more than a month before the ship date. I'm still thinking that the 40" will ship next week or the week after.

Shinraven: with the S2000. Check the links to the XBR1 and S2000 manuals I posted... the V2500's functionality (and manual) resembles the S2000 (which also uses the Bravia engine). The XBR1 has game mode, drc etc. (even if it had some wega or whatever engine); the S2000 doesn't. But this isn't necc. bad... I think we'll have to treat the V2500's as a whole new model and not assume anything based on the xbr2/3's.

lcd1080: I was also told by a b&m (belmont tv in md) October for the 40 and 46. The guy seemed to know what he was talking about too (he knew what a V2500 was). But the pattern for the xbr2's has been pre-order shows up and then the sets a couple weeks later.
October? October?? That's more than a full month of football season and a few weeks of the fall TV season. Oh the humanity!
the more i hear ..the more attractive samsung 4695 is sounding. dont think i can wait a month plus for this 2500 that may not give me what i want

Right so if the pattern for the V2500 mirrors the XBR2 then at least some retailers should have them within the next 2 weeks. Hopefully some of the on-line retailers have agreements for the initial supply well in advance of the B&M stores. Otherwise it's hurry up and wait I guess. There's really no other LCD-TV on the horizon that looks better to me at the moment.
