Velodyne's 5 Mic SMS-1 Kit is out!

But does it work with the SMS-it doesn't mention that just the Digital Drive and SPL Series subs? Edit-Just verified that it did. Man, Velodyne gives quick service-email sent and answered in like 5 minutes-kudos to Velodyne.

Just to weigh in on this one. The Mic-5 can use 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 mics in different locations. A switch on the hub indicates how many mics are to be used. The hub does a simple average of the different locations. The kit is 5 of the DD style beringer-type mics with cabling and works with DD, SMS, and SPL (via a mini-jack cable).

We targeted it for installers who will do multiple installs with it. Don't see it as practical for individual users, really!

I think this is a great item based on measurements from multiple positions I've done at home. The idea seems to be the next logical step for EQ work, the R+D software (was ETF) is designed around the idea of doing multiple measurements in different positions to identify room modes. I'm just waiting for home theater seating that comes with the mics built-in to each head rest.

We should get a bunch of SMS-1 owners to pitch in and buy one, then rotate it among the group so everyone can EQ their sub(s) with it. Or someone buy it, then rent it out...

It actually does sound like a great idea--to get as equal of response at muliple locations as possible. i think you would still have to do the individual location tests for each spot to see where your highs and lows are and determine which spot is best. But I like the idea of tuning your sub system for a whole area/multiple seats/rows than just one listening position. You might have great response in one seat and then terrible elsewhere--this system averagesthe response from mulitple locations to make sure every area gets as good of response as possible. There are definately some theaters in here that are large enought to take advantage of this new approach.

A little pricy but worth it to the professional. Nice concept. I like it!

It's the response in my room measured at one foot increments along the sofa. The numbers on the right are the different levels at 49Hz - the frequency showing the biggest range.

I've got three extra mics/cables, so if someone wants to borrow them you could have a "quad" mic array - not the full five, but it would be interesting.

Aren't these mics ECM-8000's?

They are, but I don't know if Velo mods them in any way.

The Velodyne mics appear identical to the ECM-8000, however, there was a brief discussion in another thread indicating they were not interchangeable....this was several months ago.

I heard a rumour that Velo might have switched the pin assignments on the mic, can anyone confirm this?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.

It would be great if it were possible to get the MIC-5 without the microphones, and then allow users to buy microphones individually. That should drop the price for a lot of do it yourselfers. I certainly don't need 6 microphones (1 that came with the SMS-1 plus 5 more with the MIC-5) microphones in my home. 4 total microphones would be what I need.
