As expected, the XBR2/3 will not accept 1080p Component from the Xbox 360.

In most cases you are correct. However, according to the evaluation performed by Home Theater Magazine, the XBR2/3 fails the 2:3 cadence recognition test at 1080i, so it will not de-interlace 24fps native material correctly. This is the reason that I, for one, had high hopes for the Xbox 360 update.

Those failures were with drc on though, with it off I thought it passed everything. If that is also true I am going to throw the tv into the doorway of BestBuy and pull off

Chase - I've read the same about the 2:3 issue. However, at a retail store, I saw the Toshiba HD-A1 player playing Corpse Bride on an XBR3. This is an HD DVD player that outputs 1080i. The connection was via HDMI and it looked phenominal. Is it possible that the coversion of the 24fps source material to HD DVD makes the 2:3 problem a non-issue? Am I missing something (learning a lot here as I await delivery of my XBR3)

My recollection is that turning DRC off enabled the XBR2/3 to pass the 1080i weave de-interlacing test and the 1080p bandwidth test, but it still failed 2:3 cadence recognition for 1080i.

I'm skeptical that MS would gimp the 1080p output just to help Samsung sell TVs. Seems to me that there's a lot more to gain, PR-wise, by having 1080p work on TVs manufactured by the maker of the PS3, don't you think?
well I know for a fact Sony supports Blu-Ray, and I want to say Samsung supports HD-DVD. So it is my believe Microsoft did it because Samsung is a supporter, and also because it can do 1080p over component (supposedly)
I hate speculating stuff like that - "MS gimped it on purpose so people wouldn't use Sony TVs," but I certainly wouldn't put it past them. I'm hoping we get SOMETHING out of MS here, even if it's just a "we are aware it does not work."
The sammy can do 1080p over component and someone already mentioned with the new update their sammy recognizes both vga and component show up fine on the tv as 1080p sources. I do know for a fact that microsoft/bestbuy/samsung have deals in place where all 360s have to be hooked up to samsungs displays at all times. Every tourney I have been to have samsung displays hooked up to every 360, so of course the Microsoft team tested and made sure all the sammys had no issues waht so ever with the 360.
I will be going back to bestbuy tomorrow to check out the samsung tvs and if they are remotely close in features and picture quality I am taking my xbr2 back.

If you do not currently see any of the artifacts associated with failed 2:3 Pulldown Reversal, then I suggest you simply enjoy your XBR2/3 and do not go looking for problems. The XBR2/3 still produces a stunning picture.

No. However, frame cadence tends to vary during actual program material, so 2:3 recognition isn't the only thing that affects how well a display de-interlaces.

Samsung has a contract with MS that their tv's are the official tv for the
XBOX 360.

Samsung is a BluRay supporter and currently has a BluRay player on the
market.

Can someone correct me if i'm wrong.

I wondered if there were any of you that have moved from the back projection sets of the xbr1 to these Direct LCD screens.
Could you comment on what you see as improvements of one over the other?
Any problems to note?

I am thinking of going from my XBR1 50 inch to the 52 inch LCD screen that is scheduled to be this month.

Thanks

You are correct. I never even thought about that!

Anyways, this is such distraught information. I'm trying to study for my graduate course but this damn forum has me heated! My XBR3 was PURELY for PS3 1080p over HDMI, and 360 1080p over VGA. WTF?!!!!

Welcome to my world. If the 46 inch sammy looks even half way decent I am picking it up later this week and taking this overpriced thing back.

I don't think this is true for all best buys (may depend on magnolia or not). At lunch I dropped by my local best buy to see if they have the 52" sharp out yet and noticed a Sony LCD (maybe a v2500) hooked up to a Xbox 360 and a couple people playing it. I also noticed a 360 hooked upto to a phillips plasma.

The smaller the AWG number, the fatter the cable.
Just order the length you need, don't worry about the AWG.
If in doubt, get the one with the smaller AWG number.

MonoPrice cables are awsome.

Interesting. Every single BestBuy I have been in, from NC to CA, has had sammy glued to the 360s. I even spoke with the director in charge of this agreement in California about it. Either way only the Samsungs are working with 1080p via vga and component right now. With that being said I am going to be a turncoat and hop over to the SammySide.

Indeed the Sammy 4096D is looking mighty fine, $1K less in price with 1080p over vga... nearly identicle PQ after calibration as well. If I go with LCD I'm skipping this overpriced panel and buying the Sammy.

Over component, when I select 1080p I get a screen full of static for 10 seconds before the console reverts to 1080i.

Feh. Since the XBR2 is one of the most high-profile, wildely available 1080p displays on the market, you'd think MS' engineers would find a way to get the two to work together, but noooooo...

Is there some kind of switch on the VGA cable to switch it to HD like there is
on the component cable.

It sounds like your getting a 4:3 standard image instead of a 16:9 widescreen image. I hope its just an adjustment that has to be made because this is
very disturbing. I was about to go and pick up the VGA cable, but it looks like
i'll wait.

Join me in my turncoatedness
Really, this is rediculous. Top of the line panel that is overpriced and overhyped with the 1080p slathered all over it cannot even accept a signal from my 360. Which is the main reason I got it. I hate Microsoft and Sony equally as much right now.
Dammit cant return my 46XBR3!

Anyone want it for $3k? hahahhaaha

I'm sure the Xbox360 1080p update this morning will be fixed so that Sony sets will work with the vga cable for 1080p action. i HOPE

Haven't people had success in getting 1080p output via their PCs on the XBR2/3s?? If that is the case, then the issue HAS to be with the Microsoft update...

If all you had been using to hook up your PC to the XBR2/3 was DVI-HDMI, how bout giving VGA a try and running some test patterns? I find it hard to believe that as long as this TV has been out, that everyone has been waiting on the Xbox 360 dashboard update to test out this set's 1080p VGA capabilities...
I am annoyed by this, but didn't the xbr2 already upconvert everything to 1080p...from what I understand it's just the xbox doing now instead of the tv? Would there be any noticable difference?

1080p from my Powerbook to my XBR3 via VGA works.

Apparently, no1's been able to get 1080p from their 360 to their Sony set (Pearl's, Rear projections, and LCDs). C'mon MICROSOFT! WTF

I have an 46"XBR3, so is it supposed to accept an 1080p signal over vga ? Or just through HDMI ? I'm using a 360 with the vga cable .

Did you download the update this morning? Supposed to let you output 1080p. Upscales games to 1080p.

If you're using component, doesn't upscale DVDs to 1080p; HD DVD add-on will be 1080i.

VGA upscales DVDs to 1080p and will allow HD DVD add-on to be 1080p.

I did download the update this morning but when I select the 1920 1080 option it says signal not supported please change your settings. I am wondering because I have a prehistoric emachines 550 and hooked it up and it displays 1920 1080 on that just fine.

Sony has an XBOX sensor that prevents the XBOX from being used. Sell your XBOX and buy a PS3. It will work fine.
has anyone called microsoft and heard anything from them about what is going on....same with Sony......from what I've seen this may not be an issue with our tv's, probably more of a compatibility thing with the update. My xbr looks great with the vga even before the update, so I know the vga cable works well with the tv. Could it be a Frames Per Second issue? I hope this gets figured out!
