Samsung HL-S6187W Shuts Off On Its Own

Hello!

I tried to search the forum for an answer, but either no one has had this issue with this TV, or I'm bad at searching.

Anyway, my TV is about 2 months old, and during the last week, I've noticed that sometimes the TV will shut off on its own. Sometimes it will happen after it's been on for a couple of hours. I'll turn it back on, and it will be fine for the rest of my TV watching.

Other times, like last night, it will happen relatively quickly (~30 minutes). I turned it back on, and it went off again in about 10 minutes. This was repeated no less than 4 times.

I thought it might have been that I accidentally had set a sleep timer, but upon going into the menu, no timer was set.

Additionally, I thought that it might be the Logitech Harmony 880 remote I was using, as in perhaps I had accidentally pressed some buttons while not paying attention. I put the remote inside a cabinet, and the TV still continued to act up.

I'm hoping someone here can assist. I have a service plan with Best Buy, but before I call them (if I can't fix it myself) I'd like to know more about the issue.

Thank you for your help!

Bump. Any ideas anyone?

I had a BestBuy service tech just come out. The TV didn't do it (he was only here for about 15 minutes, and the problem normally takes about 30 minutes or a little more). The fans are running (I thought that maybe they weren't and therefore the TV would shut itself off after getting too hot). He said it could either be a bad temperature sensor, a bad lamp, or a bad DMB(?) board. But unless he sees the issue himself, he can't just start replacing items.

I'll just place another service call and turn on the TV before he gets here next time, but I figured I'd toss this out to the crowd again, just in case.

i got the same thing happening to mine. flashing red light on the front. try and turn it on and it wont. unplugged it for 15 minutes-plugged it back in- got a pic for about 5 seconds then back off again-flashing red light. it says in the manual that the red light flashing means the tv is to hot/temp. let me say i wasnt home all day when i turned it on so how could it heat up?

thank you best buy extended warranty.

My 6187 went of once a couple of weeks ago on a hot day, (room temp maybe 85). A couple of simutaneous flashes of the red and two green lights, and it was gone. Off for 10 minutes, and it hasn't happened again.

After seeing the above two responses, and after doing some testing last night, I don't think I have a fan/temperature issue (my system would just shut off -- no lights on the control panel, and I could turn the TV back on right away. Plus, I realize that I can hear the fan running if I stick my head behind the TV).

I did go into the service menu and did a 'Factory Reset' (which I hope does only what its name implies -- resets the TV to its factory default settings). The TV stayed on for the entire time of my TV viewing (3.5 hours), but until I can test it over the next week or so, I'm not 100% sure that whatever I did "fixed" it.

Just a thought. I don't know if your 87 series has the same feature, but my HL-S6188 has an "Auto-Off' feature (not to be confused with the "Sleep Timer" feature). If the TV is in the "timer on" mode, the TV will automatically turn off after 3 hours (if no controls have been used) to "prevent overheating."

I will definitely check this out -- I checked the sleep timer but had no idea an Auto-Off feature would be included too.

I haven't been able to test the TV again, hopefully tonight I can give it a stress test.

Thanks all!

Sounds good! Please keep us posted! My TV seems to be okay again (::crosses fingers: but it would be nice to know what parts they replace, and why it was happening.

Hello all;

After 2 weeks of getting my 6187, it started to shut off on its own as well. What I did was just gently tightened the cover to the lamp engine panel on the back, as it was slightly loose. Seems like if the light engine cover isn't snugly closed, then the tv will power down. This worked for me. 3 months later not one unexpected shut down

Good luck to everyone

This seems to make the most sense now (for my issue). It would explain why after the tech came my TV started working fine again, even though he said he didn't do anything. He must have taken off the lamp cover and put it back on, tightening the screw. I wonder how the screw works itself loose in the first place though!

this is a dumb question i guess...but u mean just to tighten the screw from the back of the tv?? do i have to open the cover and tighten something inside or just tightne the screw on the back of the tv??
The lamp panel on the back of the tv need not be removed at all, for my set I just untightened the one screw at the top slightly and then re-tightened it.

Since the tv will shut off if the lamp cover is removed, there is a contact on the lamp panel that if not seated properly will cause your tv to turn off intermittantly.

are we talkin about the same thing? i said it shuits down and the red light on the front flashes. when your set shut off did the red light flash?

BTW tech is coming friday. my tv has been working fine but i will have him go through it.
Yes, we are talkinga bout the same thing. I had the flashing light when a shutdown occurred as well. Went through all kinds of possible solutions, different power cable, tried a power conditioner, etc etc. Nothing worked. Finally tried reseating the lamp cover door. That was my solution. Not one shutdown since.

Hope my experience can help someone.
If the lights blink then it is very likely a bulb ballast issue.

if there are no blinking lights when it shuts down (like you hit the off button.....but didn't) then it is the DMD board.
speekergeek you are correct.

the tech replaced the bulb and ballast and checked out everything else back there. although there was no way for him to test the ballast and bulb he pulled out samsung recommended changing the parts anyways.if it happens again he said he will come back and change the didgital board. they change that last becuz it costs the most. so far no problems at all.

anyways it seems to have worked out well. he also told me that sammy products are very good build to them and he has not seen any "postings"about problems. there must be a sight that techs visit to get inside info.

Samsung are very tech friendly and easy to fix. in my experience they don't break any more than other brands (except RCA thomson proscan HAIER plasmas and some philips). Not brand bashing here, just facts.
Samsungs are good sets.

Bought the S6187W on 12-16-06. Within 2 weeks it started the shutting off gig. Called Best Buy and they said check the timers. DID IT. Still cut off. Went a week or so without incident. Watched a ton of DVDs. No problemo. From January 6 to now it has cut off after no more that 20 minutes each viewing session. I turn it back on without a problem and it turns off after 3-5 minutes.

Called Samsung and the guy I talked to there cut me off in mid-sentence and said it is a known problem....send it back. Supposed to get a new one on 1-16-07. Wish me luck.
I know this is an ancient thread, but.... Has anyone else had problems with their hl-s6187w? Mine has been powering off and showing 3 blinking lights. I think using "game mode" causes the tv to shut off.
I had the same problem; my Samsung would shut off by itself. What resolved my problem was the power plug (The plug that connects to an outlet) behind the TV. After moving it around so much and jumping alot (I play alot of video games on it) the plug behind the TV had become loose; I pushed it in all the way and my TV has not shut off since. I know this will not work for everyone but at least give it a try. I bought my TV about three years now and I LOVE my TV!!!
I have the same problem with my unit shutting off. It started out intermittently, but seems to happen more frequently with time.

Upon turning the tv back on, it buzzes/hisses twice, and then comes back on. At one point, I thought I saw the standby & lamp lights flash.

Currently, the tv is on - and there are no lights on! Usually the green lamp light is on, whenever the tv is on. The owners manual doesn't say anything about when NO LIGHTS are on.

The unit ran out of warranty 5 months ago, and of course - this is the one time my husband did not purchase the extended warranty! Nuts!

Does anyone have any ideas?

My HLS6187W is almost two years old. Exact same symptoms, shuts off randomly (happened three times in the last 20 minutes) and no lights display. I'm calling Samsung tomorrow, even though I'm out of warranty. This is my third Samsung DLP and the first to experience this issue. I'm wondering whether the bulb is going ...
My husband and I decided giving one more thing a try. We opened up the door to the light bulb, gave everything a thorough dusting, and then tightened the door again. It hasn't happened since. That's 12 days now!

Keeping my fingers crossed!
Samsung advised me to contact an independent service center. I'll give the dusting a try
