I listened to some focals today, and all i can say is wow!
The room had 800v surrounds, a 800w center, and a set of 807w's as well as a set of 705v's upfront. All powered by a marantz 5007!
The 705v's sound very, very good for the size, and they look amazing.
With the 705's hooked up and running in a stereo configuration, it's easy to see how those lil bookshelf speakers can beautifully fill a smaller room with dynamic, clean audio. When put into the 5.1 configuration, with the 800w center and 800v surrounds, the poor lil 705's got lost in the mix right outta the gates. We eq'ed the surrounds and front channels down, then down some more, and the 705's, though pushing clean sound, just didn't have the gusto to compete with it's bigger brothers all around.
We then hooked up the 807w's up front and went into a stereo config.
Wow! Just wow! Those bad boys blow the pants off the 705's! Even in the 2 channel config, the 807w's filled the room with deep, round, dynamic audio that had me listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn's instrumental rendition of Little Wing in a way that I never before had imagined possible. Absolutely amazing!
Of course we had to try out the 5.1 configuration with the properly crossed over and eq'd 800w center and 800v surrounds. Not to be overstated, but this setup yields a home theater experience that is thrilling, expansive, and detailed in a way that has left me convinced and ready to make a set my own.
I am, admittedly, no veteran of high to mid grade audio experiences, but after today I know where I'm going to start my foray into this decadent land.
