Do you know when the 800V and 800VW lines are being discontinued? I thought the 800W or VW was replaced at the time the new 900 series came out, but they are still on Focal's website.
I don't think the 900 is a replacement for the 800, if that is indeed what you were asking. The 726V was replaced by the 726 (dropped the V), and the changes seem to have been limited to a revised tweeter (TNV2) and new cabinet styling. I suspect the 800 series will be updated similarly: same new TNV2 tweeter and similar changes in cabinet styling.
Are you able to audition the different series? The 800 series does have a better crossover network which helps improve sound quality. If you can afford the 800W, or find them on sale, you will probably be pleased with the mid and woofer upgrade over the V's polyglass woofers.
Another option I would suggest:
Looking at MusicDirect.com. for only $146 more than the 726V, you will get a lot more speaker from the Profile 916 than either of the Chorus V speakers... IMO. (The profile line has a different look to it, but the sound is nice.)
I have located a store in the LA area that has both Focal and PSB and I will drop by next week to see what they have.
The special anniversary 826W has the better mid/woofer, but the new V-less 726 and 826 have/will get the new tweeter. While the 916 seems to have a better an nicer looking cabinet, it is a 2.5-way system with one fewer woofer. But definitely something to consider too, since it seems to also have higher end mid & woofer.
I am wondering if I am making too much out of the new TNV2 tweeter. The mid driver is probably the most important, especially given the crossover points chosen by Focal. So maybe I should look for a bargain on a 826VW. I also have the feeling I can't really go wrong with any of these choices. Btwy, the target room size is a moderate 20ft by 16ft.
I am open to something up to about US$ 2,500, but I am not one to shrug off a good bargain.
