Does the 5679 offer 1080p output via the VGA connector?

No TV will do that. Do you mean input? If so the answer is yes.
:: smacks self on head:: Oops, yeah I meant input. I want to connect the X-Box HD-Dvd to the VGA and obtain 1080p.

Thanks for your help.

One more question. I already have a HTPC connected to the VGA, could I use a KVM switch to keep them both hooked up to the one connector?

So the Tech was over the house yesterday and it turns out there is nothing wrong with my new 5679w. I was paying too much attention to the quailty of the SD channels and not the HD channels. I changed one setting on my HD cable box and everything seems to be fine. The HD channels look awesome. I am very happy that I bought this set. Now all I need is a Calibration soon and I will be real happy.

Thanks for everyone's help here.
Sd will always look blurry and out of focus because that's how it is since there is no detail with SD. It looks exactly the same on a 20" set only when you watch a 20" set yo're usually too far away from the picture to see all the defects.

Great to hear it turned out well. Enjoy the post-calibration TV even more!

Thanks. This TV is amazing. Everyone is so concerned about the contrast ratio on this
LED. I think its perfect for my rooms enviorment. I have only out of the box settings to
my eye and the HD channels are amazing. I can't imagine how much better the set will be with a Calibration. I just updated my DVD player to the Samsung DVD-HD960. It was so low a price I could not pass it up. I am not ready to jump into the Blu-Ray or HD-DVD until that dust settles. One good thing was that I got the wife into the HD too. She can't believe the picture Q in HD.

I agree. I actually saw a short PC Magazine review the other day, which basically said that you can't use this set in bright daylight, and the settings out of the box had some issues. Well yeah, this set is definitely better for an enthusiast, and no HD set should be watched in bright daylight, it's just not the way to enjoy TV. They gave it about 3-5 stars if I recall...which was too bad. It's a great set. The HLTs will probably be better in a few respects, but I'm in awe of this set every time I watch HD, and SD isn't too bad, all things considered.

I would recommend though, if you're using out of the box settings, to at least enable Movie Mode and adjust the color warmth (forget the actual name of the setting)--I put mine on "Normal" instead of "Warm2" and found it much nicer.

Hmmm...I keep reminding myself that I need the chance to go into the SM and fiddle with the gamma, and turn off the overscan on my new set...

A lot of people are using Eliab's initial settings and then getting the DVE calibration disk. Check the link at the bottom of my post.

I did set up my 5679w using Eliab settings in HD. For some reason my set looks the worst in the Movie Mode. I can use Standard,Dynamic or Custom mode on my set and the HD channels look Awesome. The SD channels come in very good too. I have been setting the color to Normal or Warm 1 and it looks great. My set is right next to my picture window in the living room. I have no problem with the picture when its a bright day outside. I will at some point get a Calibration done but at this point I am extremely happy with this set. I am picking up a new DVD player this week and then I will get the DVE calibration disk and do that. I thought that I read somewhere on the sets made from November on that you can turn off the Overscan. Is this true and where can I find info on how to do this.

Thanks for the help.

I agree. I just put a neatly trimmed piece of 3/4" black vinyl electrical tape over my,

TV

and, voila, gone, completely invisible!

What you read was about models that end with "87" and the date was 12/11/2006. Your HL-S5679 has always had the ability to turn off overscan.

For overscan start here.

The Long Overscan Story

The folks who like the "overscan" off feature the most are HTPC users.

I would not want to be without 1:1 pixel mapping because of my HTPC.

One problem that you will still have is that there is still "physical overscan" that will cut off some of the Task Bar in Windows. There are two ways around this problem. You can double the size of the Task Bar. That's the easy work around.

Turn off overscan and adjust vertical and horizontal image location with these instructions.

Provided by scsiraid

You can also use a program called PowerStrip to customize your desktop resolution. I haven't used PowerStrip myself but it's very popular with HTPC owners.

You can get PowerStrip 3.7 here.

That's great to hear. I'm tempted to get my 1st HDTV (if you don't count the two HDTVs my siblings and I bought for our parents). But I will wait until the new HDMI 1.3 versions are released this spring/summer. I'm very much leaning toward Samsung and the benefits of LED are enticing.

About the Blu-ray/HD-DVD thing, LG announced a player in this year's CES back in Jan. that is technically a Blu-ray player but it also plays HD-DVD (sans some interactive features). However, it was very highly priced.
The best combination right now is a PS3 20GB and an HD-A2. That way you can get excellent BD and HD DVD playback for under $900. $300 less than the LG player with many more features.

In time, there will be universal players available from other manufacturers (besides LG). And eventually, they will be priced reasonably, although probably not by this year's X-mas.

This doesn't surprise me actually. I have worked on quite a few Samsung DLPs lately where the Movie/Warm2 setting brought the set below 6000K - making it appear somewhat reddish.

Eliab

Eliab,
Can this be corrected in the Movie Mode with a calibration and would it make the Movie Mode look better with more contrast, brightness and less reddish tone. I can use all the other modes Custom,Dynamic and Standard and they all give me Excellent PQ. I am currently using Custom with my own custom set-up and the PQ is great. I know there is always room for improvement and I would like to have all the Modes displaying excellent PQ. Am I asking for too much here?

Thanks for the info and help.

By the way it seems that this thread has been kind of quiet lately. I guess that might be good in a way meaning that 5679w owners are not having many issues with their LED DLP TV's.

Happy St. Patricks day to all.

CEL2004: My new issue may stir things up again!

I am experiencing intermittent start-up problems and am beginning to wonder whether my new 5679w is defective. Here is my spotty log of these issues:

- 2/2/2007: 5679w delivered and started up. Picture set to Eliab's and CNET Katzmaier's default suggested start settings. No video problems noted. HDTV left in red "Standby" to receive auto-downloads of OTA TV GUIDE EPG.

- Last week of 2/2007: At start-up, full width but half height flickery video; then normal full screen motion video returns spontaneously.

- First week of 3/2007: At start-up, full width, but flickery image only appears in the top 20% of screen. Images flicker and move from right to left in top band. Turned off; then on restart, normal full screen motion video returns.

- 3/11-13/2007: No start problems.

- 3/14/2007: 4 green LED indicator blinks; then full screen rapid flickering of static color image for about 15 seconds; then normal full screen motion video returns spontaneously.

- 3/15/2007: 4 green LED indicator blinks; then normal full screen motion video; then after about 7 seconds, full screen rapid flickering of motion video for about 15 seconds; then screen splits in half: top half black / bottom half flickery motion video; then after about 20 seconds normal full screen motion video returns spontaneously.

- 3/16/2007: 5 green LED indicator blinks; then after normal start-up elapsed time, screen flashes and video expected; no picture / black screen; then rapid flickery black screen for 30 seconds; then normal full screen motion video returns spontaneously.

QUESTIONS:
** Do you guys think this indicates a defective Phlatlight LED engine?
** Should I call Samsung, or continue to log these intermittent aberrations?
** Do you have other ideas as to what might be causing these issues?

I love my set and it works perfectly after I get by start-up. BTW, I know others in this 50+ page thread have commented on the "half, top/bottom screen" issue.

Thanks for your comments. Avio

Here are the specs of my set:

MODEL CODE: HLS5679WX/XAA
VERSION: RE01
Made in Mexico January 2007

I normally start-up my set at 5 p.m. every day and turn it off to Standby at about 10:30 p.m. I watch OTA DTV using a large roof mounted DTV antenna, VU-120XR VHF/UHF/FM, and receive excellent HD PQ and sound on all the major networks. I also regularly watch DVD's connected by component-video input. My PC notebook is connected via VGA running 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz. Occasionally I connect my desktop PC using Wiselink Firewire and have successfully captured full HDTV content using VLC and the so called "Core Drivers" for AV/C Devices.

I would call Samsung to establish a record, but be very careful what repair I signed on for. Your set is supposed to be on and usable in about seven seconds so something is wrong. Since everything else is fine, I would worry about getting an incompetent repair person.

Do you have an extended warranty?

I would add some pictures to your record if possible. I would also keep logging the good and bad startups, and keep a record of every contact with Samsung.

Good luck.

No, just the one year + 3 months for registration.

YIKES This is getting scary

Here's this evening's start-up log entry:

- 3/17/2007: 4 green LED indicator blinks; then about 1 second of full screen rapid flickering of color motion video; then full screen TOTAL RED TO BLACK "gray scale" motion video, no flicker. I waited 15 seconds, then changed channels; Red to Black gradation persisted (No Green / No Blue). I waited another 15 seconds and turned it off. Then, after restart normal full screen color motion video returns.

Definately call Samsung ASAP! You shouldn't have to put up with that on a 6 week old set. Great job documenting the problem!

Good luck

Avio,
Sorry to hear about the trouble with your set. After looking at the LOG of your problems the one thing I would do if you have not done it already is for Erratic Behavior they suggest to disconnect from power source for 30 seconds or longer then connect and power up again. Hope you get the problem resolved soon or a new set from Samsung. Like you I really love this 5679w DLP set and hope that it stays trouble free. Good Luck.

CEL2004: Like you, I dutifully read the Troubleshooting Appendix in my Owner's Manual, and yesterday followed their procedure to solve, "TV Operates Erratically." I unplugged my set, waited over a minute, and plugged it back in. It seemed to have no effect. An hour after this I tried the evening's start-up and got the weird Red-to-Black gradation that I describe above. BTW, after the strange RED start, I watched 4 hours of HD OTA DTV programming last night and PQ was its usual excellence.

htwaits: As you suggested, I plan to set-up my digital camera with tripod this evening and try to capture the start-up "Surprise-of-the-Day." Maybe my set will be "camera shy" and will refuse to exhibit any problems.

klac: Thanks for your support and encouragement.

I plan to call Samsung on Monday afternoon. I'll keep the Forum posted.

Thanks guys. Avio

I decided not to use the telephone and instead used Samsung's online Service Request procedure. It worked fairly well. I received a Service Ticket Number and a local Authorized TV Service Center will be notified.

This way I have an electronic, dated record of all communications with Samsung and their contractor service people. I emailed the local Service Center and copied my daily log of the problems into the message.

BTW, the Samsung website says,

"Note: You are qualified to receive a brand new replacement unit. In order to process, original proof of purchase, such as a copy of purchase receipt is "required" to receive warranty service at no cost. Please use the "upload purchase receipt" button to upload your receipt if a scanned or electronic document is available."

I uploaded my purchase receipt to Samsung.

I'll keep the Forum posted. Thanks. Avio

Good luck, Avio. From what I've read, Samsung is pretty good about repairing or replacing a misbehaving TV, as long as it's under warranty.
Here are the past 2 days log entries:

- 3/18/2007: 4 green LED indicator blinks; then normal full screen color motion video start-up.

- 3/19/2007: 4 green LED indicator blinks; then full screen TOTAL RED TO BLACK "gray scale" motion video, no flicker. I waited 15 seconds, then changed channels; Red to Black gradation persisted (No Green / No Blue). I waited another 15 seconds and turned it off. Then, after restart normal full screen color motion video returns.

As was suggested, I attach a pic of my TV screen from 3/19/07 showing the Red to Black gradation. The yellow in the image is not visible to the naked eye when viewed. My digital camera picks up this yellow color from the LED color spectrum. Note the natural colors in the wall tapestry above the TV image for comparison.

Thanks. Avio
