Just replaced my 4805 with the IN76. My goal was to get a cheap but better pj until 1080p's come in later this year and for a variety of reasons chose the 76.

Last night I unplugged the 4805 ( calibrated) and put in the 76 out of the box (no calibration) in the middle of Deadwood (HD STB).

Sorry to use such a hackneed (sp) expression but- WOW!
I had not seen the 76 before but did not expect such a quantum improvement ( a year ago or so I went from X1 to 4805 and it was not as dramatic).

The 4805 is no slouch but the 76 is:

Brighter (too bright- needs ND 2 filter)
Punchier
Better blacks (but not astoundingly so)
Better contrast
Better Saturation
Quieter (much)
No pixels at 1.5 screen height (I sit at 4 x)
Sharper (even in Film mode)

I honestly haven't seen that many pjs but I have seen Ruby, Qualia, Marantz and a few others.
Is there a better sub-$2k pj? And while thats a real question, I am very very pleased and wouldn't upgrade for another year or so at the least.

p.s. FWIW I watched all of Ferris Bueller- it is an excellent overall test disc for skin tones, colors, contrast etc. AND its pretty good movie (unlike most many ref DVDs).

It was between this and Sam 710 and Mits 2000. There are just no issues the 76, its much cheaper and the picture is fanastic; nearly as good if not the equal of these two.
At $3k when it first came out it had more competition but under $2k now it may the pj to beat in this catagory.

Just got my IN76 today. (great work Jason) I want to enjoy the pleasure also. I had the Screenplay 7200 and hope this is an improvement. Frankly if it is quieter and a small improvement in picture quality I will be very happy. My old mount did not work. Any suggestions on a new ceiling mount? I really want to start watching today so any suggestions from CC, BB or the Shack would be greatly appreciated.

There is no better 'out of the box' sub $2K Projector on the market IMO .

Just mounted mine. Not real happy with out of the box settings. Can someone tell me what settings they are using? Mine is dark and purple looking. Thanks for your help.

rcoxjd1,

If your IN76 is that bad out of the box I would bet there is some kind of problem. Mine looked so good out of the box that I didn't change much of anything from the defaults.

From all the posts I've read on the IN76, and the one or two others I've seen, my experience is pretty much the norm. You may want to give Infocus or your dealer a call.

Then the game becomes a bit different and the HC3000 beats the IN76 in some categories (not all) .

More than likely it would not fall under $2K with a mail in calibration , but then this obviously depends upon the individual deal (no price talk please) .

Whats the offset on this bad boy...I've been running an Optoma H31 for about a year, but a new job and some extra scratch have put me in the mood to upgrade.

My concern is that, like my H31, I'll need to give it some tilt from the ceiling and correct with keystone...no choice, my ceilings aren't even 7 feet tall.

Anyone know?

Hmmm..that would make it one of the shallowest offsets in a low-range DLP that didn't have lens shift.........me likey.

Can anyone confirm Mjolson's number of around 16%??

Yep , that offset is about right for the IN76 .

Officially it's "115%" meaning bottom of the image is 115% of the screen height below the lens (ceiling mount). According to the spreadsheet posted here somewhere by Bob Williams I believe, it's actually a bit less than that.

You guys are making me very happy, I ordered an IN76 from AVS Friday, should ship Monday, hopefully I'll get it (and have my theater ready) next weekend. I'm greatly looking forward to a better (and more reliable) picture than the MT700 it's replacing

Well, for one, the IN76 will be near perfect out of the box. The Optoma will require pro calibration to achieve accurate greyscale and color temp.

The Mits hc3000 has now had a price drop and is under $2K.
Projectorreviews.com said that (after tweaking, of couse...)

I guess with an offset of 15.59% and with the price range of this PJ , it might be the one for me!

Please check my math...
Room has 14.5 foot throw, 7.5 ft ceilings. Light controlled, but I plan to watch mostly HiDEF sports and TV. At most, I'd like a 110" screen, but 106 or 102 is more likely.

I can put this projector BEHIND the wall so that the top of the lens is near flush with the ceiling.

MAX for a 110" screen
Assume I use their ceiling mount, plugging in a screen width of 96" into the Infocus Excel calculator, I get a min screen to ceiling distance of 14"
90 (ceiling height) - 14 (total offset) - 54 = 22" off the floor

If I "flush" mount, I get...
90 - 9.5 (15% offset + 1" wiggle room) - 54 = 26.5 floor

For a 106"
Ceiling Mount
90-14-52=24 " off the floor

"Flush"
90-9-52 = 29 " off the floor

Questions
Does this meet the HT standards for viewing height? We will sit about 13 back.
How does the IN76 handle SDTV (Not every game is in HDTV)?
Can I tilt the projector up just a bit to raise it without affecting quality too much? If so, any ideas on how many inches I can raise it?

That would be an interesting comparison since I owned the mt700 before getting (a series of) Samsung 710's. The 710 was a huge step up from the mt700 (which was an enjoyable unit when working)

I believe the IN76 comes standard with only a one year warranty versus two years for the HC3000. You can buy extended warranties from Infocus but that should be factored into price comparisons if the warranty period is important to you.

Exactly , these two units are at the top of the their game at this price range and either unit is an excellent choice . If you want something better then be prepared to spend almost double with the likes of a Sammy 710 or the BenQ 8720 .
