I have it on good authority and experience in my time in the A/V industry that magazines, forums, etc. are always angling for revenue streams. It costs quite a pretty penny to be able to post as a manufacturer on forums and companies make a clear and concise marketing effort/investment to do so. Sure, they come across as your buddy, a nice guy, someone just there to joke around, answer questions, pop in from "time to time", etc. but it's all with their eye on the prize. A/V forums are watched and monitored by some companies constantly.
I know of one in particular that had a thread bashing a manufacturer and when a factory rep stepped in to answer questions, etc. he was told that to continue to do so their company had to contribute...... financially. Another manufacturer told me that when they tried to post open and honestly, as a manufacturer, to answer questions/consult someone who posted a question in a new thread that they could NOT unless they registered and paid $10,000. That same screen company was once told by a popular A/V magazine that they would review their screen AND give it high marks if the company bought a $25,000 ad pkg.
Be careful of who and what you believe and read on the internet or anywhere that revenue streams ebb & flow through what I would call "face time" or "content" dollars.
