It depends on the fatness. Even with multiple fat wallets, my backround would cause me to look for a better value.
However, I would not be working, so I would have a test system and play with them all and sell them off when I was done.
copy, i like it,I called Mission Audio/Video here in Santa Barbara and they said Revel was coming our with the new Ultima 2 line and would be launched at Cedia 2006. I am delighted that the new Ultima 2 line is more traditional in design and the Mahogany will go very nice with our new wood floors that we will be installing.
I got a great deal on a demo pair of M106s a few weeks ago and am having some issues I hope are room related. Since I bought these online I didn’t get to audition them before buying. My room is several times longer than it is wide with bay windows at one end. My 2 channel av setup is at one end of the room, facing across the short side so the windows are to the left and a lot of open space is to the right. The speakers are maybe 3’ from the back wall with a 42” LCD between them about 1’ closer to the wall. I use a Sony S9000es cd player into a Creek 5350SE for music, and digital cable-->Schiit Bifrost dac-->Creek 5350SE for tv.
After setting everything up I turned on some random action movie and immediately noticed that the windows were reflecting so much sound it seemed like I had installed a left surround but not a right. I think the issue is due to the intended increased dispersion, as I didn’t have this issue with my previous Triangle Titus monitors set up in the same spot. Since covering the windows with panels and/or moving the system is not an option due to WAF I might just be stuck with this.
Another issue is that while the bass is well extended I feel like it’s lacking some measure of control. That, plus the window reflections messes with certain dialogue. My “better half” who couldn’t care less about sound and has never in 8 years spontaneously offered her opinion on my system, randomly said she had been watching some shows and certain low voices sounded muffled in some way. Using the port plugs helps with this, but I feel that it kind of defeats the purpose of buying a larger monitor. Maybe I need more power?
The last issue is kind of hard for me to describe. Certain treble sounds like extended high vocals and NFL crowd noise feel louder than they really are. I don’t have much experience with different speakers but I’d described it as kind of a harsh sound. It’s sort of a physical feeling of pressure that makes you set your jaw a bit and reach for the volume control. If I set the volume according to those frequencies the rest of whatever I’m listening to/watching is too quiet. I think this might be due to a combination of hard reflective walls and the window issue creating some kind of distortion effect. I may also just need an amp/preamp that would be described as “smooth” but I don’t really know.
Anyway, I’m torn. With most material these sound amazing and are clearly a huge upgrade from my Triangles, but the issues I’m having with the high and low frequency extremes are making me second guess things.
