The Raptor Room Theatre Construction

You may have seen quite a few months back, I had Reaper do a bunch of renders for my new home theatre called "The Raptor Room". It's also one of the renders that was used in "The Home Theater Book" by Warren Peterson. Anyway, I'm now well underway and thought you guys might like to take a peek! As of right now, it's fully drywalled but needs texture on the walls and then paint even though I'm going to go with fully acoustic walls and GOM fabric. I just installed my fiber optic ceiling from FOSI and it turned out great. It took me a little longer than I thought, 3 days, but not bad for doing it by myself.
Anyway, the room was constructed using RSIC-1 clips throughout walls and ceiling and then the walls got 2 layers of drywall with GG. The ceiling didn't get double drywall but doesn't really matter cause it's only an exercise room above. Besides, the exercise room floor is on 1 3/8" floorboard, 3/4" gypcrete, and 5/8" Acoustik flooring rubber from ASI as the finished floor material. It should be pretty sound proof!
I'm going to use the Klipsch THX Ultra2 speakers in front behind the Screen Research TheaterCurve CH screen with masking. The surrounds will fit in the speaker niches shown in my pictures (see link to imagestation album below). I'm still holding out on the projector thing due to the throw distance. I'm at roughly 17' from the screen so I'm definately going to need some lumens. I had originally wanted the Ruby but being that far away, and reading peoples comments on best throw distance and brightness, I just think it isn't enough even though the room is completely light controlled. I guess I'll just wait to see what Cedia brings.

Anyway, check out my album by clicking on the link below and tell me your thoughts.

Thanks for this great forum and the great advice given.

Very nice...

BUT WHERE'S THE RAPTOR?!?!
Looking good, I couldn't find the other album with the dinosaur.

Awesome! Thanks for the update. It's coming along nicely.

The shooting stars you have implemented sounds really cool. How do those work exactly? I thought star ceilings were made by allowing fiber optics to poke through a black ceiling. How do you make a shooting star with this build technique? Do you have many many holes in a row and run a line of many optical fibers that you fire in a row? Or something else? Curious.

Victor-eyd, I just attached a picture of the dinosaur! But he's not going into the room until everything else is done of course.

Reaper, thanks for the comments. Yes it's definately coming along nicely. The way the shooting stars work and the fiber optic ceiling for that matter, is that the fibers are run through the ceiling and then come back to the illuminator (where the light source is). Inside the illuminator is a black disk wheel that has cutouts in certain places to allow light to pass through at certain times. With the shooting stars, there's roughly 45 fiber optic strands in a row that are each 4 inches apart across the ceiling. You place these fibers in order on a drilled plate that attaches to the illuminator. When that disk finally comes around, it has one little slit that allows light to pass through and that slit goes right across the 45 fiber strands in order to give the effect of a shooting star!
Hope that answers the question.

Man that dinosaur is just too cool!

This will be a great read! Good luck. Will be great to see the finished product in comparison to the renders. If it comes close, it's going to be fabulous.

It would be even cooler if you used ballistic glass rods so it looked like it was really free-floating.

khellandros66,

I'm actually going to hang it from the ceiling using either a clear type thin line, or black line since the entire niche where the dinosaur goes will be black GOM. The stands that the dinosaur is on are only for storing it. Just curiously, you stated ballistic glass rods! What exactly are ballistic glass rods?

Thanks,

Babs,

Thanks for the kind comments. It should be really close to the renders as far as the GOM fabrics go. The carpet is going to be jet black though, and the screen wall was actually bumped out further than what the renders show. Also, in the renders I had double doors going in, now it's just a single door for sound proofing reasons. I'll definately keep the updates coming.

Same kind of glass used for the Hurrican Proof Windows or even better Lexan ones.

Lot sturdier IMPO

Thanks guys! I consider myself pretty lucky. A friend of mine who lives in the same area as me is a paleoartist, which means he sculpts dinosaurs. Well, I've known him for years but he's so quiet about who he is and what he's done, that he never told me that he was the key artist and puppeteer for the T-Rex in the first Jurassic Park movie.
Anyhow, turns out he's done a bunch of other dinosaurs like the Raptor that I got. He sculpted these dinosaurs, then cast molds off of them and now there are companies using these molds to make resin ones (like mine) for museums. My friend got me one for a great price, about 1/4 the cost of what museums are paying.

If you want to see his website, it's www.trcicstudio.com

Thanks again,

Hi Bimmeup,
Awesome looking room and freakin totally cool Dino.

Just wondering how do I get to see those renders that Reaper did for you. I am only new to this Forum and I dont know my way around that well.

Best of luck on the remainder of the build and I will be keeping a close eye on your progress . please post lots of photos.

Hey Matt Luka 73,

Thanks for the kind comments. As far as looking for the renders that Reaper did for me, click on this link to take you to that album: http://www.imagestation.com/album/pi...il-AlbumInvite

Also, I've added a bunch more pics of my home construction and some newer pics of the theatre. Today, I placed my Raptor in the the theatre for the first time to get the mounts in place and the dino aligned before my painters come in to do the paint. All I can say is WOW!!! I can't wait until everything else is done and I can finally put it up for good. Well, here's the link:

Absolutely incredible home. Beautiful location too.. Seriously your cabinet budget must have been in the 100k area. Well done. Seriously well done.
My room is roughly the same size as yours. I like the 3+split 4 seat arrangement. I may have to try that setup. My doors also open at the center of the rear wall.

zxlr8,

Yep, the cabinets were definately up there but definately worth it. This is basically our dream house that we started conceptualizing about 10 years ago. We started actual construction just over a year ago and hopefully we'll be in before Christmas. Anyway, thanks for the kind comments.

pathdoc,

I'm still going to go with the 4 across the back and 3 in front but the only thing I changed was how it's layed out. I'm basically having Continental Seating do a double loveseat with a wedge in the middle keeping them all connected. Then, I still will have walkways down both sides instead of the middle. I also changed the double door entry into one single big door. I think my double doors would've made the opening around 6 foot wide which would've cut into my speaker placement for the back. Instead, I went with a single 3'6" door that's thicker for better sound isolation. That door will have an activated sweep at the bottom and a seal around the inside edges.

Take care,

Bimmeup

Ok,

So it's been a while since I've posted anything on the forum due to getting my house done and trying to get more done in the theatre room.

Well, here are some pictures of the theatre room progress. I've got the speakers all wired up and in place, and then I had a faux painter friend who also does killer murals come into the room to give the raptor a place like home. We ended up using a lot of Blacklight pigments to enhance the area where the raptor sits and it came out awesome.

The stone looking panels you see in the room are going to be used on all the walls to give the room a "Lost Mayan Ruin" type of feel with the stone breaking apart and opening up to the rainforest where the raptor is.

Well, let me know what you guys think!
