Equipment: LG 55LH90, Onyko 607 & Oppo BD-83
Today I had my LG 55LH90 calibrated by ChadB. (http://hdtvbychadb.com/
) I thought I would write a note to let people know about my experience. After lurking around avsforum and debating the merits of calibration, I reached out to Chad on his website in early January to see if he could schedule calibrations for me and my father's televisions. He promptly responded to my inquiry with a proposed set of dates the second week of February. I was unable to move forward with his original timing, and he was able to come back with 3/15 & 3/16 for me and my father.
I began piecing my system together based on input from other areas in the forum, primarily the audio area to get speakers, AV receiver and sub and began counting the days until Chad was scheduled to visit. After exchanging a few emails based on my final selection on television and sitting on the fence to calibrate my legacy CRT television, we agreed on lunch time for him to arrive to begin work.
Chad showed up at 12pm sharp with his test equipment neatly stored in a medium sized storage bin, like the kind you see at trade shows (but smaller) and a laptop briefcase. After a few minutes of tolerating our two canine pets, we proceeded downstairs to begin work. He inquired about how I had interconnected my equipment and when I had purchased it. We discussed viewing habits and settled on night and day viewing patterns. What I did not appreciate at the time with the question was that it meant calibrating two times; he was happy to do it.
He proceeded to take baseline measurements from my television before he started his work and saved them off. Next, he reset the television settings and began working on the night mode calibration. Chad was very very meticulous in his process, taking multiple passes and working iteratively with the pattern generator the software and the television remote control. We discussed the merits of using Tru Motion feature (I left it off) and HT speaker (surround) and sub location / placement in the room. After about two hours or so he shared that he was moving into calibrating the day settings and repeated the process.
Admittedly, I dont completely follow the lexicon of how he was adjusting the television, I did follow that he was trying to flatten the curve and shoot for 6500. Chad was patient with me lurking on & off with him while he worked, answering questions, from me and my young son who was playing in the adjacent room.
After another two hours or so, I came back into the room and he was running some Blu Ray DVD reference video, which completely blew me away. The television had a three dimensional depth to it, which I had never seen before. I told my son to get my wife from upstairs and he asked if I had Blu Ray titles that we could look at. I chose Up because Chad had not seen much of it before. When I started the disc, it picked up from an earlier viewing point on a scene with deep tones with the sunset casting shadows against the house. The tree tops in the scene had detail that I had never seen before. The animation had richness and detail that blew me away.
Next, he asked that I put in Star Trek to show the scene with Jim Kirk as a child driving the Corvette, again, a depth, richness and balance in the skin tones that I had not seen before that was breathtaking. Lastly, Chad had me switch to CATV sources to review 1080i and standard definition content. Even lower resolution material had the same lifelike detail that I didnt expect.
After about 4.5 hours of work, he asked if I was completely satisfied, took a check for his effort, and we agreed to meet up at my dads house tomorrow. I am looking forward to spending more time tonight enjoying the fruits of Chads effort.
For anyone who is on the fence about the value proposition of ISF calibration, trust me, you will see a night and day difference. This particular television had wizard type menus that allow you to self calibrate and I didnt get anywhere near where Chad got this television. My dad is eagerly awaiting Chads visit tomorrow, I know that he will not be disappointed after he is finished. Chad is passionate about his work and the results of his work are fantastic. I am extremely satisfied with his work and recommend that people use him for this service, you will not be disappointed.
