Zoom on the 8300 goes too far in and is unwatchable.

just traded in my Vizio for the MX-5020HPM...out of the box the picture is not as good,HDTV and SD....however im not sure how the Vizio looked out of the box.ill run my burn-in dvd at low levels then adjust.

DaBigKahuna i ran my 8300 at 480i for SD with the Vizio and also with the Max...it seems to handle the same for both.

Umm.... I can't really remember, but I think I enabled the 480i/Wide and the 480p/Wide options in the output of the 8300 box. Then I left the Maxent in "16:9" mode. I think I set the box to Upconvert 2 or something like that. Stretched 4:3 (as long as it was SD, 480i/480p)... But I couldn't stand it so I removed those settings... Give it a shot.

If you get a chance, look back about 10-15 posts at my video and screenshots.... Do you see the flickering that I and others (but not all) have seen? (On your set, that is?)

Justin ~

thanks for posting this. This is exactly why I just ordered a Samsung HPS-5053 (only $250 more once I subtract tax from costco and use amazon free shipping).

You captured the annoying auto-contrast I experience. This is dramatically reduced when the brightness is not calibrated correctly.

You also captured the yellow/green rainbow I see, ANNOYING to say the least.

This set is great if you don't care about picture quality. And if you do, you get an outstanding picture with those 2 artifacts introduced.

Also, noone mentions that trying to view the set at 165+ degrees you can see that the glare screen is way too far away from the PDP, and you can see a double image, making it unwatchable at high offset angles.

I'm anxious to see the Sammy's 13bit vs 8bit on the colorbanding issues in the shadows.

Yep. Maybe that's why some still haven't seen it yet. For anyone who hasn't seen it, give these settings a try. Verified with DVE and Avia for my Oppo 971H over HDMI: Contrast: 78, Brightness: 54, Color: 40, Tint: -8, Sharpness: 1, Black Extension: Off, NR: Off.

I just thought that's how plasmas were! Do manufacturers generally put the glass closer to the PDP?? When does your Samsung come? Please keep me updated on the difference!

(HDMI)
can anyone confirm that the 3 picture modes, vivid, standard and cinema suck?I've been running my burn-in dvd for 14+ Hrs now and thought id look at some HDTV programing, it wasn`t good.

my Vizio looked pretty good with the pre-program modes.

Tweaking with VE will help the picture i hope.

Yep, they all suck. Look to my previous post for settings I got through DVE in the "User" Menu.

Last night I was thinking...if I continue to read about and make my own pro's and con's about 50" plasma sets I'll never be satisfied.

Then my wife and I sat down to watch a movie for the second time on this set. The movie was called Animal and had a lot of low light scenes. This set handled the dark scenes horribly via HDMI. Man am I dissapointed.

I did not do any calibration...but should the average consumer have to?

I have to say it...this sets...ugh..ugh..is....ugh..ugh...going...ugh...ugh...back - there I said it.

With how problematic these sets can be I can't get myself to purchase anywhere else but Costco. I saw they have the Panny 50" on discount for $200 off as of yesterday. The bezel being dark gray does nothing for me so thats a no go. I'm thinking on giving the Vizio 46 LCD a shot when it gets released.

It sounds like some simple set-ups with a dvd program might help.

at least i hope so-

DaBigKahuna, what mode did you use to watch your movie?

My only experience is with a 42" Samsung. The cover sits 1/16" away from the PDP instead of what looks like 1/2" on the Maxent. There is ZERO double image on the Samsung. I think this is why Maxent specs do not say 175degree viewing.

Hmm.. I didn't see the discount on the Panny @ my Costco.. Anyways, what do you mean the bezel being dark gray does nothing for you? You don't like the bezel, so you won't consider the set?

Anyone have a SA 8300HD box from TWC and have gotten the universal remote to work? I went through the search function to try and get the universal remote to control at least the power to the TV, but no luck.

The activity in this thread is decreasing each day. Quick question: Is anyone actually satisfied with this set? I can't recall how many people have actually decided to keep it. Mine's going back as soon as I make a decision on another set. 100%.

Also, keep in mind that with the Panasonic price drops, getting it from an authorized panasonic dealer, with no tax makes the Maxent and Panasonic similarly price (minus the C* return policy, of course). I thought the Maxent def had a better HD pic, but there are too many shortcomings, at least with my set (flickering and the yellow-green trails with high contrast motion).

Great, I'm glad that you are satisfied, but I'm not looking for that "perfect tv", just looking for one that has (even somewhat) stable black levels and better color rendition. This bouncing around and floating blacks is out of control and the people @ Maxent said there is no way to disable it, it is just the way the TV processes contrast/brightness changes. They also said there is no way to adjust color temp via presets, only through the service menu and I'm too scared to play with that.

No matter what, there are certainly going to be shortcomings, as there are no perfect sets, I just feel that I can do (much) better for slightly more $$ (Panasonic 50px60u, Samsung 5053, Panasonic 50PH9UK).

Just so it's searchable: DirecTV HR20 RC23 Maxent code 11755

I got this off of http://www.ezremote.com/setupcodehel...tSelection.php

hello all,

i'm a satisfied owner of a 50X3, which is last year's model. this has IMAGE SHIFT, but doesn't tout that as a GREAT feature for BURN-IN protection. does your 5020HPM state very confidently that BURN-IN protection is any better in this model?

i gotta say...the features (contrast ratio, burn-in protection, multiple inputs, etc...) are very attractive compared to last year's. i bought mine just about 2 months ago, and now i'm considering exchanging it. the only thing stopping me is the new design SUCKS and of course the hassle of it all.

atb!

I can't understand people's fascination with "image shift" and the white screen modes.... The image shift really only shifts around by a pixel or two, so there's still going to be uneven wear on most of the pixels if you aren't careful. The white screen/break in modes you can duplicate with a simple free DVD from these forums....

Be careful with this set, the "better contrast ratio" (at least on my set) seems to be achieved with flickering blacks at different APLs.

I have been quite happy with this set. Other than the issue with the 2nd(DVI) HDMI or the poor built in speakers...everything seemed fine. That was until this past Sunday when the TV started intermittantly flickering to a full red tint to whole picture. This only happed once every couple hours for a couple seconds at a time. Then during "Brotherhood" it froze on the red screen...still see pic but everything red! Finally I turned off the set after a minute or 2 and turned it back on. Everything looked good for then. Next day and every day since I still get the occasional red flicker.

This panel has an amazing picture, but I dont believe the build quality is on par with the better "name" sets. I will return mine soon, although not sure what I will get.

My set's going back, too, but for other issues. Just curious, are you using component cables? It could be that one is loose and causing the intermittent red picture/flickering... Just want to help you out if that's all that's wrong with it, it might be simple to fix!
