1930ci DENON - Page 4

So far I'm happy with my Denon 1930CI, but I have one issue I have been unable to figure out. When I use the setup menu, you can output test tones to verify your audio setup.

When I do that, only the left and right channels produce a tone. Center, surround left and surround right give nothing. All speakers are set to large. I've tried just about every combination of settings without success.

When I play a DVD, I do appear to get the proper audio from all speakers, despite the fact the test tones only work on two of the five. There is a similar testing feature in my Pioneer amplifier. When I run it, it produces proper tones on all speakers.

I'm using component video out and the digital optical audio from the 1930CI to the Pioneer amplifier.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

so it turns out i guess the Denon 757 is the same exact player as the 1930ci. just a special model # for the few stores/merchants that carry it. Circuit City is one that sells the 757.

wasn't the 1930ci originally selling for like $500 or something? now it seems like its 350 just like the 757.

anywya my main complaint was that some setting on the 757 was set by default which made the color/picture look very washed out. turning that off it was fine but at first it really made me think the player was bad and that was pretty dumb of them to have a setting set by default like that which made it seem not as good as my old prog scan non upconvert player on component.

i do hate how you can't change the resolution by the remote and have to go down to the player itself.

also as someone mentioned on the Denon 757 thread the 1080p upconversion ends up not looking as good as the lower res for most dvds as well doens't let you lessen the black bars.

just a shame cus thats the whole reason you get a 1080p upconvert player if you have a 1080p tv and not to use 720p or even 480p as one guy said he thought looked best.

how is 1080i? i think i'm going to go with 720p for most.

the Denon 757/1930ci lets you adjust the volume that your surround sound speakers put out?

i thought that would be something the receiver does and my panny receiver with Definitive Audio speakers connnected can't do that or i dont know how.

with my old kenwood setup i miss being able to turn the rear left and right speakers up because they are far away at angles in the room and behind sofa so i often dont hear much from them unless you are near one and usually want to turn them up higher then the other speakers to compenstate but there is no way to do that

how can you do that with the denon as that wold be great.

you can't upconvert using component. the reason some said it looked better over component is because by default there is some setting set when using hdmi that makes the colors look washed out and you just have to turn that off and then it looks same as component but better because its upconverted.

the setting has something to do with blacks and grays or something or is just some type of color setting and i dont know why its set on by default because it causes ppl to think component loooks better then hdmi when they first get the player without changing any settings.

that is the onl;y one i changed though. is there any recommended settings or tweaks for the Denon 1930ci/Denon 757

do you have to setup the speakers on the 1930 if they are already set up on a Denon 2307?

Yes, Component Video looks better than HDMI.

HDMI is primarily a copy protection system. With HDMI, Hollywood can control everything about your movie watching experience. If the display (television) is not on the list of approved devices, you can't watch, or if you connect your equipment in an unacceptable manner, it won't work.

HDMI is also a data path allowing all connected devices to communicate to make certain that you are only watching the movie using original master disks. (No Putting YOUR STORE BROUGHT Movies on iPods, PCs / Macs and more.)

Don't walk away from HDMI, run.

Overall, very pleased with the player. However, the website says it has a 2mb buffer to eliminate the layer change. I still see this layer change in every dvd so far. Any feedback?

So just to clear things up...can the 1930ci upconvert through component video or not? My TV does not have HDMI so component is my only option.
If the answer is no, can anyone suggest a high quality player that will do this.

Thanks!

wow i didn't know hdmi was so evil. i mean i knew it did have some protection abilities but still thought it was currently the best connection for digital picture and sound in one where as dvi is just digi picture and component is just not quite as good as either of those 2.

as far as the guy saying he heard component acutally looked better that was prob just from me and maybe others or just me saying in a previous post about the denon 757 when i first got it that component looked beter then hdmi becasue on hdmi tehre was some setting set by default that washed out the color of the picture.

but these denon players can't upconvert over component. and this should answer to the question to the guy from last post.

There is a small list of dvd players that can upconvert over component which you can find.

Multiple emails regarding this problem have gone unanswered by Denon, so this forum may be my only hope. I purchased a DVD test disk and it gave correct audio with the exception of the subwoofer. Using this disk, subwoofer audio appears to come out of the front left and right and center speakers.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

What setting is it that needs to be changed to correct the washed out look? I think the HDMI connection outputting to 720p looks better than component on my 42" plasma...just my opinion though.
The manual says even if you select progressive in the menu, it will always output in interlaced if you use HDMI...why is that? Should component be used then?
How do you adjust the brighness/contras in the setup menu...can't find it!

Most (me too) find Component looks best.

I did a quick comparison of the Superbit DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases of "The Fifth Element" and remain duly impressed by the Denon's ability to up-convert standard definition DVD content to 1080p. The difference in picture quality was very subtle, even when viewed at a distance of approximately 3 feet.

A Sony PS3 was used for Blu-ray Disc playback.

Attached are two pictures. The Blu-ray screen shot can be identified by the white "pause" symbol in the lower left hand corner. These aren't the greatest pictures...lots of ambient light, no flash, low end camera, etc...but they should provide a feel for how subtle the differences were.

One potential deficiency with the 1930CI that these pictures do illustrate is apparent pixel cropping on the left and right edges. Notice how the PS3 fills the entire width of the display and the 1930CI leaves a thin strip of black on each edge...has anyone else experienced this problem with 1080p up-conversion?

I purchased my 1930CI a couple of weeks ago and I am pleased. I own a Westinghouse LVM-42W2 42" 1080p LCD the and up-conversion to 1080p is very good. Gladiator looks looks great in 1080p.

DVDs have never looked so good. The the combination of the 1930CI and a 1080p display has definately renewed my interest in watching DVDs.

Has anyone compared the 1930CI up-conversion to that of a Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD player?

No, I think that is about Bug number 3 in the 1930CI firmware.

I you want to upscale over component get a Helios H4000.

http://www.neodigits.com/new/body/pr...4000/h4000.asp

Most find Component at 480P better than HDMI at 1080.

HDMI is primarily a copy protection system. With HDMI, Hollywood can control everything about your movie watching experience. If the display (television) is not on the list of approved devices, you can't watch, or if you connect your equipment in an unacceptable manner, it won't work.

The main firmware bug is in the setup menu. The test tones used to verify the audio setup, only produce tones on the left and right channels. The center, surround left and surround right give nothing.

And so far, Denon does not reply to emails. (ones sent by me anyway.)

I had 1930ci and was extremely disappointed with it. It took 2 1930ci's for me to give up. The first 1930 locked once, but was resetable by unplugging. The second time that it locked (one day after the first lockup), i could not reset it...and the dealer had to disassemble it to get my DVD out!!

The second 1930 was given to me (fresh out of the box, as was the first) as a trade for the 1st one. Again, similar lock up problems, but all resetable.

Both units had lip-sync problems, most notably on "Saving Private Ryan" Collector's Ed. Both units also could not pass 1080p signal through my Denon receiver (4306) via HDMI.

I ended up getting Sony DVD player.

I found the setting to fix the picture quality...I think I may keep it now! Made a huge differenct. Why would they set the default to look like garbage?

Well.... we're all waiting... WHAT IS THE SETTING??????????????
By the way, if any of you guys or gals have any settings that you'd like to pass along, I'm sure the group would be pleased to hear them. Such as the difference in progressive scan from Auto 1, Auto 2, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions on what is the best setting and why? Any other suggestions on other settings? (I think the HDMI vs. Componenet is getting some good coverage and we should thank those that are giving their thoughts on that...)

Cheers,

Rob

Be careful of what you read on these forums. One person's opinion is not gospel. There are many who feel that upconversion over HDMI produces excellent results (including me). But don't take my opinion as the end either. Just try to gether all the info you can and always judge for yourself.

Not sure what it is called...it's just a picture icon. Hit the mode button until you see a greyscale looking image...turn that off! Looks TONS better. Lowered the brightness or gamma. I recalibrated, and got rid of 99% of artifacts.

What exactly do the auto1 and auto2 etc. settings do?

I have heard that 480p over components looks better than 720p over HDMI...I haven't seen that yet. I like the 720p over HDMI...but like you said, that's just my opinion.

I'd like someone to explain them as well. I know they are progressive scan modes. But not sure what the difference is.

Thanks

I've been using 1080p upconversion to my Sharp Aquos D37U, which accepts 1080p. All over HDMI, of course. Really nice picture. Not sure how much component would change things....

Ive heard of the macroblocking problem with this model, but how can you tell macroblocking from a poorly encoded DVD?

I think it is the Black Level option. Can't tell for sure but that looks to be the only setting in that menu with either ON/Off in the manual anyway. My 1930 arrives next week.
