Hey guys,
I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I'm having difficulty finding it in my searches.
I recently received a MediaGate MG-35 as a prize in a contest, and I am very interested in getting it working. Problem is, mine is a predominantly macintosh household (though I have a MacBook running XP).
I have already installed a 120GB IDE drive in the box and formatted it using XP (formatting it through Mac OS X did not work). The partition is NTFS.
What I find interesting is that the manual says it is compatible with OS 9 and above, but I suspect that is the USB functionality only, as the rest of the manual describes how to set up the box using various flavors of Windows.
Then there is the USB cable. It specifically says that networking with a Mac cannot be done through USB, and ethernet must be used.
So, that is how I set it up. I connected the MediaGate to my LAN with a CAT5, and using the box's own menu settings, set it to grab a static IP of 192.168.1.50.
Now for the issues. I turned on Windows sharing on my PowerMac G5, which made the computer visible to the MediaGate. When I try to access the computer through the MediaGate, I get the following error:
"There are no shared directories, or shared mode is incorrect."
I also tried the other way by pointing my mac to smb://192.168.1.50, but I get the following error message on the mac side:
"Could not connect to the server because the name or password is incorrect."
That last error message is curious, since I never set up a user name or password on the MediaGate, nor did the Mac ask me for one when trying to connect to the network share.
I've also tried turning on NDAS on the MediaGate. From the few pages I have found about this issue, it would seem NDAS is necessary for Mac network connectivity.
But what else am I missing? Is this thing just a glofiried doorstop?
