The M-Audio Transit (correct me if I am worng) provides an optical digital audio I/O for computers that don't have it.
The same problems would happen with it as for Macs with built-in digital audio I/O. Namely, the AC3 codec for quicktime, which can play AC3 audio in AVI files, will only output mixed down stereo.
As far as I know, the only 2 options are: Get a mutli channel audio card, or multi channel USB box that has discreet analog outputs for each of the 6 channels and pipe that into a receiver that has discreet inputs. The AC3 quicktime Plugin is supposed to support that.
Or, and I can't confirm this, use VLC to play the AVI, and it might do direct AC3 out the digital audio port. That should theoretically work with the Transit. I don't have a receiver with digital audio in to test that.
For now, DVD Assist doesn't force AVI's to play through VLC, although it has been requested so that Front Row could support subtitled AVIs, and maybe AC3 audio from AVIs too? If I added that, it wouldn't be particularly pretty. The AVI would start playing in Front Row, and then get killed and restarted in VLC.
Can someone confirm or deny that VLC can play 5.1 AC3 audio that is embedded in AVIs, and have the receiver recognise it as such?
