Official JVC HD-xxFH97 HD-xxFN97 HD-xxFC97 Owners Thread - Page 119

So the one (and possibly only...) issue that i didn't agonize over before buying my 56N97 was 1080P output from the 360. I just discovered that the JVC can't handle 1080P via component, but the available resolutions via VGA are pretty anemic. Until such time as Microsoft releases an HDMI-equipped 360, do I have any options for viewing it in 1080 P on the JVC?

I am also curious about www.buydig.com also? Great price but want to know reliablity.

1080i works just fine.

Just wanted to drop by and say after months of research I finally bought the 61FN97........can't wait to hook it up

The new software does NOT allow you to send multiple commands to access one input (when customizing the device through the "Advanced" or "Adjust Inputs" screens). Anyone with this TV and a Harmony remote who is using both HDMI inputs has probably realized that this used to be the only reliable to get to Digital In 2. I wasn't even aware they had changed this until I went in to tweak some other device, and when I updated my remote, the "macro" I had programmed as Digital In 2 stopped working. I also added another TV device to my remote setup (same model #, 56FN97, of course) and the commands look vastly different from the first time I added this device (a couple of weeks ago).

So, if you're happy with the way your Harmony is working currently with your HT, I'd think twice about making any changes to your remote.

I see that several of the price comparison web sites give buydig.com good marks for customer satisfaction. I can't find buydig.com listed on the JVC web site as an authorized dealer but the do claim all of their products come with the full USA manufacturer's warranty. This may or may not be an issue if service is necessary during the 1 year JVC warranty period. They do offer the MAC extended service plans for extra cost which are supposed to be very good.

Costco no longer has the 70" JVC on their web site. They only have the 61" and they don't list a price for that model (probably meaning that its also not really available). In any case for those of you lucky to have got your orders already in for the 70", does it come with the base and if not did Costco even offer the base as an accessory?

I've read every post in this thread and many others relating to the current "F" series models. None have mentioned a premature bulb failure. The previous series (model name escapes me) did have some issues earlier in it's life which apparently have been fixed or improved as the production run continued.

Now that I jinxed myself... I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these "F's."

Yes, my order has it coming with the stand.

I also am not thrilled with the cost of plasma/reflections, the poor contrast ration of LCD, the rainbows in DLP (did I miss anything?). I've been a fan of LCOS for years, and decided to finally try it out. I use the Theater Pro setting with Low color temperature, and calibrated brightness and contrast with DVE. The SSE is better, but I don't feel that it is minimal as others have claimed. I still see it in blues, greens, tans, whites, yellows, etc. I am trying not to look for it, but it is always there - shimmering and crawling. I'm waiting to see if I can get used to it/get over it, but I'm not sure.

I gave up after about 2 weeks with the 56FN97 because I had the EXACT same experience you had. While Plasma reflections are "bad" - they are not nearly the factor the SSE was for me, and you can alway correct reflections by room setup/viewing angle. SSE is inherent, and cannot be corrected. A shame, too, because otherwise the TV was terrific. My family didn't care/didn't see it. But *I* sure did. Maybe because I wrote the check.

I'm very happy with the Panny TH-50PX60U plasma I ended up with - at least so far after two weeks.

Sometimes it will go to 1080, but as soon as I power it off or switch the TV (56FN97) TO ANOTHER INPUT, IT REVERTS TO 480i OR 480p. I've tried the box in picture modes "auto" and "fixed" with the same results. Connected via HDMI to Digital 1 on the TV.

Anyone having success with the 8300 HD and the FN97's? If so, how is it connected and what setup routine did you use on the 8300? I've got a Time Warner guy coming tomorrow but wouldn't mind fixing it myself if possible.

Thanks,

I have not found a solution for this problem. After reading posts in the SA 8300 forum, I have found this to be a common problem for the SA 8300. Changing the box probably will not fix this. Right now I'm just living with it but it's a real pain everytime I have to change it back to 1080.

I have it working again. What I did was to set the activity using Digital 2 to Video 1, then added the inputdigitalin command twice with a 500 ms pause between them. I could not get it to work by going directly to Digital 1 then sending the inputdigitalin command. I'm thinking maybe the second command was not getting sent quickly enough.

I have a 70" fh97, Have it hooked to a Sont BD-1 Blu ray player via hdmi.
Went through the settings last night and couldn't get it to show a picture
on 1080p/24 direct. I can get 1080p/60. I am sure that I have had this
set this way before. Any ideas?

Dennis, thanks for the tip. I'll give that a try. I assume you programmed the additional commands into the activity itself. What happens if you're in that activity that uses Digital 2 and you select that activity again? The remote doesn't resend the inputdigitalin commands, does it?

Also, what command do you have setup for your Digital 1 input? Nothing I try seems to work correctly if I'm switching from my TV input. It doesn't switch inputs on first push, but if I go through the "help" screens, it eventually sends the correct command. I guess it could be an interdevice issue between changing the AVR input and the TV input.

TIA,
JJ

Yes, the additional commands are in the activity.

Never tried selecting it a second time. Why would you do that?

In the device setup I added an input (called it HDMI) and used the inputdigitalin (not the selectinputdigitalin1) command to select it. That's what I use for Digital 1.

Good question Actually, when I first got my 550, after bringing up a particular device menu, I didn't know how to get back to the menu of the current activity (which I now know is "Activity" button twice), so I would hit "Activity" and then reselect the same activity. Interestingly enough, even though the remote should know that everything is in the correct state, I guess it figures there's no harm in resending a discrete code, so it would send it. So, if you use InputDigitalIn (which is really just a toggle, not a discrete command), it would toggle between Digital 1 and 2.

Now that I know the correct way to do it, you're right, there's no reason to program around whether my remote will correctly "maintain" it's state if I re-select the current activity.

It's sort of a cross between a toggle and a discrete command. The first time you send it will always give you Digital 1 (unless you are already there, which is why I start at Video 1).

Perhaps the Natural Cinema function button? Page 71 of my 56fn manual may be different in your manual. It doesn't work when receiving a 1080p input however. Is it a setting on the Sony player perhaps?

It also includes a free stand and if you are lucky you might be able to get them to let you use a 12% reward zone coupon as well. I had to go back three times before I found a person that would let me use the coupon but it saved another $290. I also wasn't real fond of the stand because it is actually designed for last years models plus it had to be ordered so I got them to just knock $100 off of a different stand. Was more than happy with the deal overall!

Well my TV died again today...HD56FN97. Turned on the TV (was fine last night) sound comes on, but no picture and the bulb does not turn on. I replaced another one in November of last year, and I can't figure out what the problem is. Anyone else had this problem before? I have tried searching, but I think I will call JVC tomorrow.

Last day for the Reward Zone coupon was yesterday (Monday, Feb. 19th). Now too late for those extra $$$ off.

Has anyone noticed any kind of difference with the Natural Cinema setting?

I don't see any kind of difference whatsoever when I'm playing an HD-DVD and flipping it from Off-On-Auto.

To get to the Service Menu:

Set to "0 minutes" using the [SLEEP TIMER] key.

While "0 minutes" is displayed, press the [VIDEO STATUS] key and [DISPLAY] key simultaneously, then enter the SERVICE MODE (Fig.1)

NOTE:

Before entering the SERVICE MODE, confirm that the setting of TV/CATV switch of the REMOTE CONTROL UNIT is at the "TV" side and the setting of VCR/DVD switch is at the "VCR" side. If the switches have not been properly set, you cannot enter the SERVICE MODE.

To see the input signal:
press 1. ADJUST

I couldn't find in the Service Manual where it states the lower left-number on the Self Check screen was the lamp hours. That's what I remember, though.

I am considering them for either the 70FN or 70FH also. The have decent marks on resellerratings, 8 out of 10 if I recall. They use Manna Distribution as their shipping courier. Please let us know how everything goes if you make a purchase through them. I did some research and they are in good standing with the BBB, and I think they are owned by the same people that own beach camera.

One note on the MAC extended warranty. Prices are cheaper thru Brian at Tapeworks Texas for the MAC warranty than thru buydig.com. Check the AVS forum powerbuy section for pricing.

Sorry for not noticing, but I don't see anywhere on the website where it mentions the free stand. Is that an in-store only deal? Also, beachcamera has the set (61FN97) for $2095.00 with Free Shipping... they have a great review record, are members of the BBB with a satisfactory rating. Anyone see any reason not to save the money (+no sales tax) and get it from them?

Call me paranoid, but a large screen display is one item I'd not buy other than local if I had a choice. That doesn't mean I wouldn't buy online, but I like having a local presence to deal with problems. I apparently lucked out with a perfect set right out of the box, but then I read about people going through three or four to get a good one....couple that possibility with dealing with a "cyber" vendor from afar.... The "savings" I'd get otherwise aren't worth the potential for headaches. For me, life's too short to roll the dice for a chance to save a couple hundred bucks on a TV....I'll save it elsewhere. YMMV.

I believe it is in store only. Which is odd because last week it was online only.
