What I see from the AFI Best 100 list is that until the format war ends or we get dual format players, if you have a HD DVD player you will have to watch 39 upconverted SD titles, if you have a Blu-ray player you'll have to watch 14 upconverted SD titles, and you'll have to sneak into a university theater to watch "Birth of a Nation".

Now someone has to compare this to Grubert's master release list!



The only titles from Gruberts list that announced for release from the AFI 100

94. GOODFELLAS (1990) (released HD DVD)
96. THE SEARCHERS (1956) (released HD DVD)
98. UNFORGIVEN (1992) (released HD DVD)

I propose that this be an informational thread on published box office lists or critic's choices or other rational categories that provide information on what format supports the movies on that list. (ex. the best selling science fiction movies of all time, etc.) Links to the raw data should be made.

I also propose that we should have strict rules on comment. Only comments that are pointing out errrors or ommissions should be allowed.

The lists should speak for themselves.

I think it's important to put concepts like "studio support" into terms that everyone can relate to and understand. This thread was meant to show that although HD DVD has made some gains in acceptance amongst the early adopter crowd, it still has a very long way to go. The format war is clearly not over yet, not by a long shot.

The list, while interesting, isn't very accurate for many reasons.
1. Most of those films aren't released yet in either format. Studio support can change at the drop of the hat- see Disney and Fox on Divx and Disney's wishy-washy Blu-ray support.
2. Just because a film is made or released by a particular company in theaters doesn't mean the company has exclusive home video rights. Libraries get bought and rights holders have a say when it comes to home video. Just a few examples. Last night I was watching "The Dark Crystal". The movie was made by Universal (still has the logo at the beginning of the movie) but was released by Columbia on home video and the Henson company has the ultimate say about who releases it in what format. Alfred Hitchcock movies like "Rear Window" and "Psycho" were made by Paramount, but Universal owns all the home video rights. The Star Wars movies are owned completely by George Lucas and Fox can't release them on Blu-ray without his approval so don't pre-order just yet. Also, Marvel negotiated an extraordinary amount of control over its properties with Sony so it is not clear that Sony could make Spiderman a Blu-ray exclusive.

A better list would be one of actually released or announced titles since movie rights are just a twisted mess to figure out and predict.

Where I was unsure I checked DVDEmpire and Amazon for the most recent video releases. It's A Wonderful Life and High Noon are both Republic films, but according to this article, home video rights are split between Paramount and Lions Gate. Life and Noon were listed according to that article. Assumptions were made on The Third Man and Jazz Singer based on prior releases, and The Birth of a Nation was listed as unknown because as of now it is.

We already have this with Gruberts thread, so this was trying to predict the uncertain future.

Very interesting after doing this that of the top 100 grossing movies only three (Blazing Saddles and Animal House, Terminator 2: Judgment Day) has been released and of the AFI top 100 only three (the 94th 96th 98th places of 100 listed) have been released.

Obviously the studios have held back on their best titles.

3/100 AFI top 100 (#94, #96 #98 released)

3/100 Adjusted Gross (#45, #54 #92 released)

I'm pretty sure The African Queen is controlled by Paramount, which would make it dual, not Blu.

Birth of a Nation is public domain, so anyone who wants to release it can do so. Image (through Film Preservation Associates) is the most likely to try it. The other good quality release is from Kino, who hasn't said anything about either HD format so far as I know.

I remembered the Fox release of The African Queen about ten years ago and assumed that Fox still controlled this picture, but I was unable to find a current release when searching on DVDEmpire. A search on Amazon turned up what appeared to be public domain versions. If you can find out more about Paramount's involvement, I will change it, but for now I think this will have to be an unknown like Birth of a Nation.
