Just doing this from memory and maybe never understood it but I thought that Sony had only a minority interest in MGM and that MGM tended to license DVD distribution rights for only a couple year at a time to other studios. Thus Sony recently had the rights for a couple years and now Fox does for a couple more.

But if this thread is about long term predictions it maybe puts some uncertainty about which camp MGM releases should really be placed in.

The current breakout we have for MGM movies pre/post 1982 is the best information we currently have based on some insider messages we received and from past studio behavior.

It is true that the MGM rights are probably more in flux now than most of the other studios and may find themselves (like in European releases) more available in both formats than some of the other studios. Since HD DVD is currently region free, that may make a difference for some collectors.

Yep, there is some uncertainty. Any other information is always appreciated.

First of all just because studios have the rights to some movies, doesn't mean they are going to re release it.

Secondly, even if they release it, there is no guarantee as to the quality of the transfer.

So it doesn't matter if blu ray is 100, hd dvd 50. If the picture quality is a notch above blu ray, then that is the way to go, regardless.

I am format neutral -- before you blu ray fan boys start flaming.

"For the last time"? That's rich, considering it's your first-ever post at AVS. You want to list Star Wars as a non-exclusive title? Fine. Make your own damn list, then. But that doesn't make it so. And as long as Fox remains a BD-exclusive studio, there isn't much else to argue about. End of story.

What are you talking about? At this time, if Star Wars were released today, guess which format it would be released on exclusively? Do you want a hint? Think of the color BLUE. Then fill in the blank> Sting ___!

Do the concepts of data accuracy and consistency mean anything to you?

bferr1 and I take the time to maintain this thread and update the lists contained here to provide data that can be considered by people and to provide some information that cuts through the hype.

We try to use the best information we can gather, to determine what format a title should be considered most likely to be released in. We have been given studio insider information and plenty of interesting links to help guide us.

But its only our best guess, no matter what the input is. We try to be accurate, and mistakes happen, but not in this case.

We are not idiots, and since bferr1 and I tend to fall on either neutral or on opposite sides of the debate on what the best HD format would be, we try to be as fair as possible.

In this particular case, we know that Lucas is unlikely to release Star Wars or any of its sequels on Blu-ray or HD DVD until there is a more mature HD market or until its clear either format is clearly winning, just based on his past history of DVD release and stated intentions. We know that in this case, Lucas has certain distribution rights that many directors don't have.

But we also know that the last Star Wars franchise releases were done by Fox, which is a strongly openly declared Blu-ray studio. So for consistency sake, Star Wars and its sequels are listed as Blu-ray leaning titles.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/dvd
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0121766/dvd

If anyone does see an error we always appreciate constructive input, either in this thread or via PM.

Welcome to the forum "obi", input is appreciated, but its kinda hard to assume our motivations, so try not to do it in an abusive trolling way, if you want to be considered seriously.

For everyone out there, Happy New Year to you all, thanks for all your support last year and we hope that our efforts here can help provide some information that is useful to you.

Cheers

That was posted yesterday and it has already been shown that some of the numbers there are way off (as they don't take into account other divisions where some of the biggest libraries reside - like the Sony group is not just Sony Pictures). I hope you will fix those.

It would be nice if we could get a total number of films from each studio added to this thread. There are many films people will be interested in, even if they are not in the Top 100.

That I see that that just doesn't match with some of the other posts in this thread. i was just tryig to include it for completeness.

It does seem to be a bisased count that downplays the Blu-ray studios wonership catalog.

Already done. Or almost so.

This is a list of all films that did over $1 Million in domestic gross. If it wassn't here find in on 4:3 cable latenight, cause it wasn't seen by many people.

See Post #89 and #93 of this thread a page or so back.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&&#post8528884

There is also lists of the top 200 grossing movies.

I found a database of virtually all films from each studio in alpha order and color coded them by format.

No I haven't updated it completely and its a huge list so its a bit off on some titles and some digital rights are guesses (and European rights are not known) but it does give a reasonable guess to what studio and hence what format a given title leans to.

If you see any issues PM me or post here.

Notes: Columbia is not listed out seperately. This is because titles I find when looking under Columbia show up under Sony or Fox as well (search for Spiderman). Similarly MGM sold the rights to its pre 1986 content which is now owned by Warner. I also didn't account for the fact that you can actually get Lionsgate content from EU resellers in HD-DVD. Since there is no region coding in HD-DVD these discs can be used in North America. I know I didn't capture every dual release studio, but the ones I missed will be added to both sides of the ledger. As for Adult content, Vivid will release in both formats. The other Adult studios that plan to release in HD are HD-DVD exclusive. These are Digital Playground Inc., Wicked Pictures, Pink Visual, Bang Bros, and ClubJenna Inc. The final item is small Indy studios. I suspect that many of these will find it more affordable to do small low cost production runs in HD-DVD. I believe this is why most of the Adult studios decided to go with HD-DVD exclusively.

BD

Lionsgate 786
Sony Pictures 2249
Fox 7612
Buena Vista (Disney) 2275
MGM (1986 and later) 1003
Warner 8274
Paramount 7118

Warner 8274
Paramount 7118
Universal 13285
Bandai 152

Catalog depth on both sides seems pretty similar . About half of the catalog depth is available to both formats.

TOTAL 16731

BD has deeper catalog depth based on these criteria. Though please keep in mind that many of these titles are not available in DVD, so these are not potential totals of HD discs. Trying to get these numbers right is difficult because there is no easy way to keep duplicates out using IMDB, but I hope these numbers are at least in the ballpark.

There are, of course, new content providers coming on board to HD discs. CBS TV will be distributing it's catlog through Paramount and they plan to release in both formats. So far Star Trek is announced on HD-DVD combo disc only though. I would to see it show up on BD later on.

Then we have the issue of the small time Independent film makers. I believe HD-DVD is the easier HD format for them because AACS is not required. From the information I've seen it looks like if you want to create HD content on BD and be able to play it on all BD players you have to license and use AACS.

we had came up with this estimate before on 09-22-06, 02:27 AM currently post #72
Quote:

Bottom Line: Currently Blu-ray has 6123 more potential titles available out of the 28023 Total Available

Common 11586 (41.3%) HD DVD 5157 (18.4%) Blu-ray 11280 (40.3%)

Those numbers yield 11586 + 5157 = 16743 for HD DVD and 11586 + 11280 = 22866 for Blu-ray which actually is pretty close in proportion to your finds using a different methodology.

Anything made prior to say Star Wars is of little interest to me and I think many. People are not running out and buying Citizen Cane on DVD and they won't likely do it for HD. I'm all for Jurrasic Park, Indian Jones, etc. Movies that will shine in HD.
