Because MGM had it previously. I'm assuming Jazz Singer is like all the other pre-1985 MGM titles, but you never know. But I did count it as Warner and a dual format release, though.

Hi Kosty - appreciate the work you must have done to put these lists together.

I'd just like to add an opinion to the discussion.

I think lists like these are better served by identifying only what has been announced and/or is actually shipping.

Making hypothetical statements about future releases simply based on which studio controls the rights (which is ALL that you have done here) is very misleading, as it doesn't take into account any of the changes in format-support that the individual studios may make befoe the titles are ever released.

About all that can be Accurately said about those lists is "If these movies were ALL released today, here are the formats they would be available on".

The reality is, that the releases of those films will likely be much different to these lists as there will be policy changes by the studios...

Point taken, though I don't think of this a misleading exercise. It's a snapshot, and only intended as such. The actual releases will obviously change. For the actual released list or announced titles, well others like Grubert have done an excellent job on that front.

The way I see the lists in this thread is that they serve to provide facts or at least legitimate guesses on the impact that studio support has on the format debate. With the European HD DVD titles being released in 1080 24p and currently region free many additional titles may be available for HD DVD than this list of current US release rights may suggest.

If you are a HD DVD supporter, you can look on these lists as a worse case scenario of titles that are less likely to be released soon on HD DVD. If you are a Blu-ray guy, you can see the impact of the additional studio support. But if you are someone worried about the format war, you can see the vast middle where a lot of these great movies lie, that are going to be released in both formats eventually.

Personally I see that despite Blu-ray's studio advantage there are a lot of these A list type movies available to HD DVD. If this is the worse case scenario, then still that is a lot of good stuff coming to the HD DVD format.

If your favorite movies are all Blu-ray only, then that could convince you to hold off until you can buy a Blu-ray player or dual players come out.

Its a glass half empty half full thing. For me, it actually shows me that Blu-ray's advantage wasn't as overpowering as I had thought it was, but it is an obstacle that HD DVD has to overcome. If you feel, like I do , that the studios will eventually follow the money and release in both formats, then these lists show how much good stuff you can still watch on HD DVD until the situation gets better on the studio front.

This is meant as a current updated snapshot, not as a propaganda device, to give people some information to consider and to help them sort through the hype. We're trying to give some information that gives some order of magnitude to the impact of studio support.

If you have any corrections or can help us keep this thread more accurate, your input is appreciated.

No probs Kosty - thanks for the reply.

It's going to be an awful lot of work re-jigging the lists when the studio announcements start to come in

Yep. bferr1 and I will try to keep up. If you can help us, especially with the Euro releases, please do.

I think that this is the currently the worse case scenario for HD DVD in terms of studio support. If you look now, even though there are more blue listings, there are actually more titles released on HD DVD than Blu-ray. Its probable that there will be many more red notes on these lists by Xmas. So a HD DVD supporter can be heartened that a lot of these great titles will be aggressively released in HD DVD.

So if we see a lot of HD DVD releases shown of these titles, one could even say that this thread could even favor HD DVD as it would should show more current HD DVD releases than Blu-ray releases. Blu-ray may have a potential advantage but HD DVD could be currently performing better at releasing these titles.

The bottom line though is this is intended to give accurate information and not become a war thread. We will attempt to provide the facts, as best as we can see, and let people think for themselves. I hope there is nothing wrong with that.

I am working on some other lists, but I may not have a chance to post them before Cedia. Thanks for all the positive feedback guys.

Yep - that's the only issue I have with the way these lists have been done.

I'm not pointing this out in a negative way, or intending to hurt anyone's feeling, tho.

The lists are a "hypothetical" presentation of what the situation "would" look like "if" the studios "never" changed their support strategies.

Therefore, it includes all titles, coded by studio "colors", even if those movies have not been actually announced or shipped for either format.

But in the real world, it would be far more usefule, IMO, to create a new color (ie Dark grey) for "Unnanounced" and code the rest only if they have been announced or actually shipping.

It would be very interesting (and useful) to see how many of the movies in these lists are actually being produced for either or both formats - now and in the near future...
Well as I see the lists as they stand, you can look at the released part of it to see that HD DVD has been a bit more aggressive in releasing their A list titles. Both sides are holding back.

I hope people see the information here and think for themselves on what the impact is.

So the fact that little has been released shows that the Blu-ray advantage is only potential and not a current reality.

As more titles get released the facts will speak for themselves.
Hmmm... At a first glance at the list, silly me thought that those movies all had a release date pending soon. rdjam has a point. Most people will probably just see to the actual movies released or the ones with release date announced when trying to decide for any of the formats.

In the meantime, many of the titles in the list are available in HD on the internet. Not necessarily legally but still available.

Hello, I am a journalist at The Observer newspaper in the UK where the DVD format war is about to hit. I am very interested in your list of films and wonder if I could speak to you about it and the format battle in general. I would be very grateful to hear from you as soon as possible.

While I also find the list interesting I also agree that in some significant cases it is probably quite missleading.

A prime example would be the Star Wars movies. If anyone thinks for a second that by the time Lucas is ready to release these and all the marketing to go with it that he would allow them to be put out to half the market you are nuts.

The only way the Star Wars movies get pressed in one format (whichever that might be) is if the format war is all but over and then it it irrelevant for this discussion.

I don't know diddley about the Sony Marvel arrangements, but I would bet you would see something similar there. In any case, it is an interesting if predictive at best list.

Cheers and thanks for all the leg work,

Richard

Some speculation and listings of total titles owned by studios by format are contained in this thread,
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...48#post8486948

Including this post: slightly rearranged by number of titles, orig posted by paintit77:

Note: the Universal and Columbia Pictures libraries are huge.
The Universal library alone is greater than all the Blu-ray studios combined except Columbia pictures.

The total United States film catalog (distribution rights for US only) break down as follows.

====================================================

Number of Titles

Paramount 5370
Warner Brothers 3019
Warner Brothers Pre 1985 MGM Titles via Ted Turner 2572
New-Line Cinema 521
Dreamworks 104

Anchor Bay 596
Orion 200

Universal 5157

Columbia Pictures 4224

MGM/United Artist (Purchased By Sony) 1945
Buena Vista 812
Lionsgate 472
Sony Pictures 336
Tri-Star Pictures 241

HD DVD 16743 Total (5157 exclusive)

Blu-ray 22866 total (11280 exclusive)

Bottom Line: Currently Blu-ray has 6123 more potential titles available out of the 28023 Total Available

Lionsgate has exactly 472 films in its library. They are 2% of the total film library in North America.

Fox has 477 owned films in its library and 1940 in the MGM/UA catalog.

While that is a much more significant count, it pales in comparision to Warners 5591, Universals 5157 and Paramounts 5370.

Lionsgate isn't going to decide this war.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_Pictures

"Most ancillary rights to Orion's back catalog from the 1978-1981 joint venture period remains under the control of Time Warner, but most of the rest of Orion's film releases are owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment through Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer"

This is good news for me as I am a huge fan of the movie Excalibur. I hope it is added to the HD-DVD list of films with a new Dolby True-HD soundtrack. The music in the film is incredible and I would like to hear Wagoner in 5.1. That would be cool.

Sorry to go OT but I LOVE Excalibur - one of my all time favorite films. A bit of trivia - this film popularized the use of Orff's Carmina Burana (the incredible scene where Arthur recovers and rides off to meet Mordred) before every other film trailer and tv commercial started using it.
Unforunately, the only dvd release of this film I am aware of leaves much to be desired. I will definitely buy the HD DVD version on the first day if/when it gets released.

ps there is a rumor of a three hour plus version of the film that has never been released - it would be a coup to have this available on HD DVD!

Ah Excalibur. Orion from 1981. Warners Bros Rights.

i would love to see this in HD also. OT comments are forgiven!

Thanks for the extra feedback guys.

The size of each studio's inventory was a surprise to me.

I find it hard to believe Fox has under 500 titles in its library. This is a 70-year-old studio we're talking abouot.

Grubert I think you are right.

http://imdb.com/company/co0000756/

20th Century Fox should have 2919 titles. Corrected my above post.

Thanks.

Kosty.
I did a search on Amazon using the terms Warner Home Video and Sony Pictures as well as others. This may or may not give us an accurate picture of what is available here in the US. If nothing else, it will add another resource to figure this out.

Here is what I got.

Sony: 2494 DVDs
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_d/...Go.x=13&Go.y=9

Warner: 3046 DVDs
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_d/...ner+Home+Video

Lions Gate: 1690 DVDs
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_pg_2/...%20Gate&page=2

29th Century Fox: 2043 DVDs
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_d/...&Go.x=5&Go.y=5

MGM: 1651 DVDs
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_d/...d-keywords=MGM

Universal: 2106 DVDs
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_d/...ords=Universal

Paramount: 1819 DVDs

I have the DVD from Warner. It does leave allot to be desired and the showing of it on HD-NET wasn't all that good either. I would love to see this film go through Lowry Studios and get a complete rebuild. The film is quite dark and needs some touchup in the worst way. I would love to see the soundtrack get an upgrade as well.

Grubert, 20th Century and many others have been sold and resold many times. Owning your library and holding distribution rights are two totally different things in the land of Hollywood. Many of the films in there library could have distribution rights by someone else. Also, 20th Century does not hold the rights on the Star Wars Franchise. They have the right to distribute only.

^^ I wonder how many of those are double dippers, fullscreen vs widescreen, special edition and standard etc.

This was a response to the Paint post 3 up from here that I culdnt type fast enough to not quote cause it was a long list
post #83 of 203
OK Assume that is a snapshot of the commercially viable catalog listing

Warner: 3046 DVDs
Paramount: 1819 DVDs
MGM: 825 DVDs Assume even between pre/post 1985

Universal: 2106 DVDs

Sony: 2494 DVDs
MGM: 825 DVDs Assume even between pre/post 1985
20th Century Fox: 2043 DVDs
Lions Gate: 1690 DVDs
Disney: 1204 DVDs
Miramax: 401 DVDs
Buena Vista: 218

thats

5690 common version releases between the formats
2106 HD DVD exclusive version releases
8875 Blu-ray exclusive version releases

But this method would seem to get a lot of duplicate, full screen, widescreen, Super Duper Bit, Special Editions double dip and all foreign version releases if it counts all the various flavors of a title when it gets re-released. Some studios have made that more of a habit. Cough Cough Sony Cough Cough

There is a study of the AFI top 100 in terms of format based on ownership; it is a sticky thread in this forum. (It has some errors, as any such list would. Who owns an MGM title is often unclear.)

I also went through once and looked at the studio ownership. Fully 1/3 of the top 100 are owned or controlled by WB. WB really has tremendously powerful content, and they have used it to support new formats. They own the classic MGM library and the RKO library. The best studio over the years with the best libraries and the best support of technology.

Universal has a lot of stuff but a lot of it is not that good. In the old days, Universal did not have the quality films that they do today.

Fox has a lot of quality stuff for their size.

LionsGate is pretty much shipping their main titles in their first year of Blu-Ray support.

Contrary to one post, Weinstein/Genius will quickly have a lot of titles, they are building a mini-major. The quality will be thin.

Kosty, I am beggining to think we are spinning our wheels. I just looked up The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and it is coming up as an MGM release. Am I to assume that this was one of the ones that fell through the Ted Turner cracks or is it one of several different distribution deals. It seams that the MGM library is full of holes with some films going to Sony and some to Warner. What has me concerned is that we continue with these lists and in 20 years, they will likely amount to nothing. I have read several different articles through many different publications that Warner Bros has the largest library of films on earth. Widescreen Magazine had an in depth interview with the former head of Warner Home Video (after leiberfard) that they had around 40% of the known film library in house and under their control. The facts speak otherwise. This may have been before the aquisition of MGM/UA by Sony. I am going to contact Widescreen to see if we can get some professional help with this.

There is no way in hell, I am doing this for 20 years!

This is a short term snapshot only, with the best info I can get provided. I think the original post and others provides at least some perspective on the libraries. As I get better information, I will update the posts. Until then, remember this is a best SWAG, and cannot be expected to be fully accurate. Its order of magnitude accurate only.

I don't know if you are still updating the list, but highdefdigest dot com lists these list members as having been "announced" for release on HD-DVD, but with no set date yet:

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
CLOCKWORK ORANGE, A
DEER HUNTER, THE
FORREST GUMP
MALTESE FALCON, THE
MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY
NORTH BY NORTHWEST

I don't know what their source is - presumably announcements by the studios.
