A Factory Reset may be called for. The User Manual may describe the procedure for that, or failing that, Customer Service will no doubt have you try that first. Phone numbers for Customer Service should be included in your User Manual.

When that happened to me, I just left the unit unplugged for several hours (6+). I think some capacitors needed to discharge.

UnPlugging the DVD recorder worked. I just wish the user manual listed something as easy as that, Thanks for the tip!

Had this message pop up a few weeks ago. Tried the solutions in the manual, no go. Tried unplugging it for 7 days, no go. Called Toshiba customer service @1-800-631-3811, the tech told me:

1) turn on TV and set to receive your DVD signal

2) Turn on DVD player and remove any discs

3) put Dvd / VCR selector on DVD

4) at the same time, push channel selector button UP (^) along with the PLAY button

5) hold the buttons down until TV screen shows "Initializing" message, release buttons, let DVD player go thru it's reset cycle and shut down

6) turn DVD player on and watch your DVD movies now

Works like a charm. Put this in your manual for the next time.

I just picked one up a week ago and I too tried these remedies with no success. How long did you have to hold down the channel (up) and play button until it started "Initializing"? Were there any other reset codes they offered?

Pressing the up channel button and the play button does reset the DVD and then it will work perfectly.....BUT.....you don't use the remote control to do this.....You must use the buttons on the unit itself.

I'm not sure if you guys are having the same issues with this Model, but i'm having a very difficult time dubbing more than 2 items on one dvd-r.
Everytime i try to put dubb more than 2 items, the machine would freeze / hangup. I',m n0t able to finalize or turn off the system. To turn off the system, i would have to hold the power button down for 5 seconds.

At this point, i have to do a factory reset. Has anyone experience this?

Trying to get this model's Time reset correctly. It was set to AM by mistake... plus DST took effect.

Trying to pull up the General Menu but every time I attempt the DVD Menu pops up and it appears to "Reboot"... instead of giving me the General Menu options (including the Time settings).

Currently leaving it unplugged hopefully it will clear the Time and allow me access to the General Menu options. Otherwise I might still be locked out AND have no time settings at all. Probably have to set recordings based on it's internal clock and not "real time".

After a one hour unplug the unit "reset" and I was able to access the General Menu. Not sure why I couldn't do it before... But maybe the unit has some long term "glitch" problems.

Anyway I hope it's owner will find it trouble free. I helped her reset the time and timer... Hopefully it gives no further glitches.

I'm glad that you keep old posts available because I am just experiencing this problem and I had no idea how to get it working. I thought a reboot might do it...just unplugging the unit for awhile. I have a Kenmore Oven that needs to be reboot occassionally. I accidently discovered that one day, but I'm glad that I found this site because the DVD Menu problem had me wondering if it was time for a new unit. Its been great so far and is a bit quirky. I'll post back to let everyone know if I get it fixed by following these instructions.

Hello. My wife bought me the Toshiba D-VR4XSU Hi-Fi VCR & DVD Recorder Combo back in July 2006 through QVC. Unfortunatley, I just set the system up three weeks ago and threw away the box and my receipt! (The lag between purchase and setup is another story)

Here's my problem: My initial impression is that this thing is a piece of crap! It plays DVDs with no problem. However, I cannot record anything to DVD! The unit will not recognize blank DVD-Rs or DVD-RWs when I load them. I have tried both the Sony DVD+RW and the Memorex DVD-R. No joy with either. In fact, in a couple of instances the system locked up and I had to completely power the unit down at the surge suppressor. When I place a blank DVD in the unit, it displays "Incorrect Disk" with "OK" flashing in yellow. Is there a specific brand of DVD-RWs or DVD-Rs that work? Please help! I am now stuck with this thing due to the fact that my warranty period has expired. Thank you.

Trust me, your initial impression was right. This unit is a piece of crap. I have ALL the same problems with. If, and when it does work, you can only play back your "copied" DVDs on this machine. I use Maxell DVD-R in this pile of junk.

toshiba sucks.. i bought the dvr 600 at xmas, it has already been back to them 2 times, and have been now waiting 10days for them to send me a 'free' postage return label, as i refuse to send it back again paying 22bucks a 3rd time....

the machine records from my camera for 1 1/2 min upto 5mins, then an error message comes on 'the tv video imput has changed', the counter goes back to zero, and another dvd-r is ruined (about 30/35 so far)

same problem trying to record camera to vcr, and vcr to dvd does not work properly either..

they build one heck of a machine...

Ok, I am having a similar problem to the ones above me in this thread.

A few days ago, when dubbing a show from VHS to DVD with the Toshiba D-VR4XSU, I stopped dubbing shortly after starting, after I realized I had forgotten to change the recording speed to the one I wanted. I left the room while the machine stopped to get a drink or whatever, and when I came back the screen showed the "Incorrect Disc" message. I hit "Ok", ejected the disc and tossed it aside, assuming it was a dud, which happens on occasion. Problem is now, every disc I've tried to use gives me the same message. I tried the Initialization using the buttons on the VCR itself, but that hasn't worked either.

I was going to buy a DVD Drive cleaning kit at Circuit City, but couldn't find the $4 one, only the $20+ one, lol. Besides it may not be the problem. Or is it? Any sage wisdom on by problem is very appreciated! Thanks!

Here I am in the same boat.

Though I have had no problems with using any brand DVD- disc has to be the - kind ya know.

Though often if I have stopped a movie during play. I find it works better to remove it, and close it with no dic, let it see there is no disc, then put in a new one. As that darn auto resume thing will make it say bad disc when ya know its good. Problem is its trying to resume where it was.

So I got the hang of that quirk and so far my D-VR4XSU has been great.

UNtil 4 days ago I tried to record a DVD at XP mode, When I hit stop when I was done it did the typical writing data to disc but an system error came up too, counld not press enter to clear it, just locked it up.

And the only way to get the disc out was to unplug it and of course now it won't do anything. Just says bad disc no matter what is put in.

Gonna try the 6hr plus unplug time like above, hope that works.
But so far I have enjoyed this machine.

Well 6hrs is not enough, neither is 8, had it unlugged a good 9 and it still remebers my settings. I know cause it skip from channel 12 to 14 still.

Must take allot longer to clear the memory.

I've had this unit for about 6 months and finally had a chance to play with recording on DVD.

Never did this before, but I CAN follow the manual's directions!

I put in a new disc, DVD-RW, selected video mode, and was about to look at the next step in the manual when a message came up telling me the disc was not formatted, and did I want to format it.

Hmmm. That wasn't in the manual! Figuring there wasn't much choice if I was going to get anywhere, I selected yes to format it. It took a few minutes. Afterward I followed the rest of the steps to set up the timer.

Then I got a message to insert a recordable disc. ??! The newly formatted disc was already in there! I ejected it, slid it back in, and got an "incorrect disc" message.

What's going on? Anyone know?
