Philips 42PF9631D HD Plasma - Page 54

I'm searching into the "Y-Board" being the issue... but does anyone know how to go about determining if it is in fact the Y Board? I've also come across an "X-Board" on my searches. How do I know which one might need to be replaced?

I found both on a website out of MN called shopjimmy.com, and another Y-Board from a place in FL for only $25. I'm in Canada and the chances of finding something like this in Canada will be slim to none in my experience.

I'm trying not to spend more than about $100 on this repair - especially because I can't just return something if it doesn't work or isn't needed. If I can 100% determine what needs to be repaired, I'll spend more with no problems (to a certain amount).

Hit this 9631 Thread, the 9631 User Thread, YouTube, and Google for similar problems.

I know others had it, the board that is replaced will solve it.

I meant hit the 9630 and 9631 User Threads.

Weird Department: For the last few weeks, that 'blacking-out' that I described a few posts ago has stopped. Maybe the loose connections re-connected (maybe they expanded or something got re-jiggled back into place) ?

In any event, I'm not going to do anything since I haven't seen it in weeks. In fact, I had totally forgotten about the problem when I realized I hadn't had to go hit the back of the 9631 in a while and the TV hadn't gone blank/black on me in a while.

One of my HDMI ports (HDMI2) is darker than the other (HDMI1). It's not the device or cable because I can switch my device from 2 to 1 and it comes in brighter I thought the TV settings were for all inputs, is there a way to reset only that port?

Hi,
My first post and I have really tried hard finding the answer.
I have a 50pf9830d plasma It doesnt turn on, its had the 2 caps replaced before (with 25v and 16v), before I owned it
The caps look fine.
When turned on light up green led after about 30 seconds of clicking (aprox 6) the red light flashes
5 Long Flashes and 3 Short Flashes,... couldnt find the diagnosis anywhere.
I have a chassis bj3.0e-pa service manual but cant find the answer.
Any ideas?
Was going to replace caps anyway.

Thanks in advance

Does anyone have any advice for getting at the Y-Sustain board on this TV? I have the main board out (that I replaced the bad caps on a while back) and the connector panel is off, but there are some heavy brackets along both sides that are right over top of the X and Y sustain boards on either side of the TV. The Y is on the left, and X on the right. It looks like I'm going to have to completely gut the TV to get at it... plastic and metal surrounding the frame and all. What a pain! Unlike the capacitor replacement where you just had to remove the back cover to get access. If there's a trick to get at it more easily, please let me know! At this point I'm not sure that I'm going to get it back together properly! eek.gif

Hmmm...interesting....I don't think you can reset only a port....it could be a defect in the port (unlikely) or maybe the SETTINGS are changed for that input ?

Make sure the Active function isn't set to Maximum for that port...that darkens it alot, besides the contrast/brightness settings.

(1) It still does 5+3 blinks ?

(2) I think the 5+3 was mentioned back in these threads, but you may have to search manually or Google it....I would look for posts from 2008-2010, I don't recall any 5+3 stuff last year or this year.

Report back....

I haven't had to do that, have you looked at posts here where folks replaced the Y-Sustain ?

I would also GOOGLE it and look on YouTube for general Philips 9631 repairs -- maybe someone had to remove/replace a bunch of boards above and beyond just doing the simple cap replacement.

was wondering if any one knew of any one selling one of these tvs for parts looking for front glass and plasma panel. i know these TVs are really old but this was a gift from my dad before he passed and would really like to fix it. So if any one knows of one or has one for sale please let me know.
You are LOOKING for spare 9631 parts ???

Check Ebay, Craigslist, and also GOOGLE the specific model you want repaired, spare parts looking for, etc.
looking for plasma panel part number or if any one has a list of tvs that philips used the same panel in.
Should be listed here in previous posts...also in the various manuals that were uploaded here. Check Thread Pages 20-35.

I wont to give all of you on this forum a BIG THANK YOU:)!!!!!!!! I last week got a broken(7 blinking lights) Philips 50PF9631D 50" plasma TV w/ ambilight from Craigslist for FREE:) Because of your information on this forum, I was able to fix it for $1.47:)!!!! And the guy that I got the TV from also gave me a like new Samsung BD-EM57C Blu-ray Disc(My first one) player:)!!!!!!!!! This TV replaces my Magnavox 50ML8105D/17 50" DLP TV that I also got from Craigslist(just needed a lamp) for FREE. And best of all it ONLY has 2328 hours/PDP 1569 hours(It is a August 2006 model)!!!!!!!!!! I was able to fix it upright(see photo 1 and 2) on it's stand:) It was HARD to fix that way. Photo 3 and 4 is my video wall before and after. This TV will stay on the cart in till I build a wall mount for it.

Congrats Jerry....enjoy the 9631 !!

BTW, best to do repairs by putting the TV face-down and using wood boards on the bezel (wrapped in something soft) to keep the glass off a floor or table or whatever. I mentioned this when I repaired my twin 9631's back in Sept/Oct 2010 or so.

I know originally quality control was a problem but when you get a good one, they can last a LONG time. My 50" was bought about 3 years ago (used with about 1,8000 hours) and I have put on 10,000+ hours on it -- it's been a real workhorse. The 42" model is used much less now as it is a bedroom TV but with just under 7,000 hours if it gets to 10,000 hours it will probably serve me great and for another 5 years (at least). Bought it brand-new about the same time as yours was sold; September 2006. Put on just over 2,000 hours a year for 3 years until the 50" became HDTV #1. smile.gif

Jerry,
Great find. based on the bottle you used to prop it open, I hope you weren't kneeling on your knees while fixing it:D

Hi everybody!

Someone brought a 42pf9631d/10 into my shop today.

Problem description is:

TV does not always start up. Sometimes it helps to plug / unplug the TV. Here in the shop I'm not able to reproduce the issue, TV does always startup correctly. Customer reported the following blinking pattern:

6 times slow blinking then 3 times fast blinking.

I openend the TV to check for the caps problem reported here many times. But I cant discover any broken / damaged electrolytic caps. My board seems to be different from the ones postet in this Thread.

I'm an electrical engineer with a fully equiped shop (scope, dmm, spectrum analyzers..) But without any manuals or plans its difficult to measure something. I cant even discover simple testpoints for the basic supply voltages. Maybe Im used to much to industrial electronics wink.gif

So, can anybody assist me with his knowledge of this TV ? Can someone send me the manual with the error codes?

Here are some pics of the inside of the described TV:

Thanks a lot for any help!

Unreal, if you go back several pages -- or GOOGLE the 6/3 problem -- you should see some solutions. Sometimes it seems to be the same solution (caps) as the 7-blinking LEDs; other times it varies. But go back up to 10-12 pages (high-20's/low-30's) when we correctly diagnosed the 6/3 problem (which I forgot because it isn't as easy or 1-solutioned as the 7-Blinking LEDs).

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to thank PhilipsPhanatic for his post.

It seems I was able to repair the TV.

I had a 42pf9631d/10 with the 6-3 blinking problem. (6 slow / 3 fast).

I discovered this thread and changed the mentioned parts. Thread:
http://www.avforums.com/forums/plasma-tvs/400763-philips-plasma-repair-advice-thread-22.html

I had to change 3 capacitors and an IC.

Two 2.2uF/50V Electrolytic Capacitors
One 22uF/35V Electrolytic Capacitor
One IC: MC3406P

Ive found all the described parts at Farnell. Here are the farnell Part Numbers:
22uF: 1714705
2.2uF: 1714713
MC3406P: 1652411

Total cost of about 5 Swiss Francs. Ive choosen Electrolytic Capacitors with
a high Temperature/Lifetime rating.

I marked the parts on this picture.

Hopefully, this will help other people with the same problem.

Have a good time.

Unreal, congrats !! I wasn't aware of that previous thread but it seems to have very specific advice. The 9631 User Thread did not have that specific advice for solving the 6/3 problem.

I'll have to scan to see if I can get rid of any flashing sparkles on my set. It's not a killer so unless the problem gets worse or it's an easy fix, I'll just live with it for now. I think someone mentioned Y-board discharge but I can't recall.
BTW, Unreal, how many hours did you have on the TV ?
Thanks!

Not that many. I guess about 2 hours. Most of the time was spent searching the web for information/manuals rolleyes.gif

Without the mentionend thread, it would have taken much much more time und probably the customer decided to throw this tv away and replace it with a new one. I'm happy that this wasnt necessary smile.gif
post #1616 of 1618
NO, how many hours does the TV have with you and the previous owner ?

Enter the Service Menu as per the earlier posts (0-6-2-9-5-6-INFO...enter SM....write down the 2 numbers in the lineup).

Hello everyone. I am a new member of this board. I came about this forum because I am having issues with my 42″ Philips Plasma TV (Model: 42PF9631D/37). It is giving me the 7 blinking red lights during start up. I can get it to power one by doing the plug/unplug trick. After reading many pages, I was sure it was the two blown capacitor problem so I ordered 2 3300 uf 10 caps from digi key without even looking at the PS. Today I opened up the TV to look at the PS. The problem is I can't find any bad caps. The PS is a Samsung LJ44-00119A, I have looked and looked and do not see any caps that look bad. I played around a little bit and this is what I have found.

1. There are three main boards that I see, one board on the left, one board in the middle (the power supply) and one board on the right. I have noticed that If I unplug from the power supply the board on the right, the TV turns on without issue, but the picture is really bad as in not complete. I assume these two boards on either side of the TV control x/y picture.

Is this an issue with the board on the right side? If so, what is this board called and what does it actually do?

Thanks for any help in advance.
Kamdog, if you are getting the 7-Blinking LEDs it is 99% certain that it's those 2 caps. Even if they don't LOOK bad, check them out...remove them...and use the 2 new ones.

If they are bad you should be able to see their tops potruding a little bit and/or see some black 'goo' but maybe not. Replace them anyway, being careful not to disturb any other objects and making sure you attach them properly.

Do that and report back.
