My Ridiculously Inexpensive Dedicated KICK*** Home Theater! - Page 12

Congratulations Doc, the room turned out awesome.

I concur with the others on the Harmony remotes. They are well worth the money. There's a remote control forum on this site which discuss the remotes in depth. But here's a good link which outlines the various remotes. The main difference between the remotes are their hard button layouts. Check out the link in the second post....

I have the Harmony remote with the Xbox 360 buttons on it. It lights up, has macros, and can control the 360's menu system. I'd recommend it as well....

I'm going to add another vote for the Harmony remote. I own an 890 (same as the 880 except its RF so it doesn't need line of sight to the devices its controlling).

Any button on any of the remotes you have in your kick *** home theater can be learned by the harmony if it is not already programmed on logitech's website. If there is no 'hard button' on the harmony that it makes sense to link it to, you simply add it as a button on the LCD screen and label it whenever you want.

So if you like to have access to keystoning when your projector is on, that button will show up on your lcd screen whenever you are using the projector. You have up to 8 'special' buttons available on the screen at any time. If you want more special buttons than that, no problem it automatically sets up more than one page of special buttons!

I didn't think it was that important for me to have this remote. I basically got it so that my fiancee could watch a movie without having to call me first. Now that I have it, I can't believe how much I love it!!

P.S. must feel great to have gotten so far with your HT!!!!!!! Congrats!

It sure does, it is a very satisfying experience. I am really tossed up regarding this whole remote issue. On the one hand I can see the benefit, on the other hand I really don't want to drop over $100 on a remote. I also do not like the idea of having to go through multiple pages of assigned buttons to get to a specific feature. I think I am just going to stick with the original remotes that came with everything.

In other BIG news: tonight I bought a plant at Walmart for $9.96 to stick on the projector shelf.

Small amount of rebuttal...

I have my harmony running my:
-samsung 50" plasma
-Onkyo 504 receiver
-Satelite dish box
-Toshiba upconverting dvd player
-Xm MyFi radio
-Playstation 2 DVD remote [which i don't use]

I added in all the functionality of all the remotes [they are in a drawer i haven't gone to in a LONG time]. Only when I am watching a dvd do i have more than one page of extra buttons to scroll through. I have 2 pages... and on the second page I put the least used buttons [like changing the camera angle of the DVD]. The second page are really buttons that I will likely never use...

Your mileage may vary i guess, but for me i don't have to scroll through multiple pages. A very well thought out remote!

Anyhoo, it is a lot of hard earned $$ thats for sure. But in my case well worth it. I never liked universal remotes until I got this one.

I also eventually would like to set up the lighting to work with the remote... so i push "watch dvd" and the lights even dim!!! Now if i can only get the remote to make popcorn...

I definitely understand the whole 'system works fine now and that doesn't cost me anything' angle though....

Enjoy!!!

A good call Doc. If you don't mind the remotes, then no use in buying the Harmony. If you ever do decide to get a universal remote at least you have many good recommendations.
I think you need to start a second home theatre. I'm already missing reading your daily progress reports!!
I have very much enjoyed following your HT saga...

Rickster: HAHAHAHAHA, now that is funny-a 2nd home theater. I can see it now " honey the guys on AVS think I need another home theater, we won't be needing that garage anymore, will we?"

ShamHollingera: I can see your points and frankly have not completely put the
Harmony out of my mind. I am having a hard time seeing past the coolness of that color screen.

Next up is the conversion of the closet to a PC workcenter. I am looking for a desk that will fit within the following dimensions:

Width-45 3/4
Height-77 3/4
Depth-28 1/4

Well then Rickster, keep an eye out for my own version of Doc's "Cheapster Theatre". I finally am getting some film developed (yeah, no digital snaps here, I'm afraid, just good old 35mm) and will resurrect my thread on here called "Last Chance" theatre. Although I have a new name for it.

It'll now be called "The Blue Eagle Theatre", referencing one of my wife's anniversary presents to me, a Schwarovski Crystal Eagle perched on a brilliant blue LED display stand..

This is not 100% true. For example, when I watch a movie, the controls on the LCD screen are for the DVD player, not the projector. Yes, you can change devices and get access to them, but they don't show up automatically. I guess you could set an activity to be "adjust projector settings" and go from there, but that seems kind of stupid

With the firefox add-on for the Harmony remote, you can order your soft buttons in any way that you want (something that the Harmony software doesn't do by default). So, on my DVD player, I have the most commonly used 8 buttons on the first screen. I also looked at the device settings for my HD-72 on the remote and there is not a pre-programmed button for direct access to keystone, brightness, etc. You can access the menu, but you would have to manually learn some of the other buttons (although you can change aspect ratio through the soft buttons).

What do you guys think about building a desk into that closet? How would you go about it? I was thinking about nailing some wood at the height I would like the desktop around the periphery of the closet and then laying some sort of material down on the wood. This would provide a desktop that appeared to float. The only issue is that the rear of the closet at one point is not straight and angles forward. I am not sure how I would cut the desktop to size to accomodate for that angle. I was also thinking of putting cabinets below it and above it.

Any other ideas? Is there an easier way?

Post a couple of pictures of your closet. It would be easier to visualize it.

I recommend searching http://www.dealnews.com and http://www.slickdeals.net/ regularily for "Harmony 880". They often go on sale (many times at Dell) and these sites will tell you about the lowest price they have found things for.

It is with a bit of sadness that I must announce a slight change in my theatres'-mascot - that Schwarovski Crystal Eage fell from it's perch atop one of my tower speakers tonight, breaking off it's beak in the process.

I'll be searching for a replacement poste-haste and get it for the room before the wife finds out,,,,,,

I offer: The Broken Beak Cinema

Here are photos of the closet that I am having an impossible time finding a desk to fit in:

The wire on the shelf above is the coaxial cable I ran under the crown molding for cable TV/Internet access.

So what would you do with this closet to turn it into a PC workcenter? Keep in mind that it is in my HT and I want it to look awesome.

Thanks!

You wouldn't happen to be British or British descent by any chance?

I found my desk!!!!!!!!!! I realized that my audio rack was built by Sauder so I went to their site to have a look around. Low and behold they have a desk which is a perfect size and in the exact matching color as my rack! A miracle has transpired. I will be ordering it tonight!

Here is the desk for the curious out there:

http://www.sauder.com/furniture/product.asp?p=725

Compare it to my audio rack to see the match:

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html...sin=B000DT7DG2

They are both called caramel birch so even though I can't see the desk in person I am absolutely certain they will be the identical color.

Next on the shopping list: A new PC! And this is not part of my HT budget, this is a Xmas gift from the wife. She is generous this year, I have the green light on a 22" LCD and a core 2 duo system with all the trimmings!
The desk/hutch looks like a perfect fit for the closet Doc.

And you are a lucky man to be able to buy a nice PC. I always have to buy cheap computer equipment because I spend too much money on A/V stuff !!
Actually a rather nasty mix of Scottish and Irish, Doc. Means I love to drink but hate to pay for it!

I priced out that stupid crystal bird - 600 bucks!!! I don't know whether to kill the wife for pissing that much money away on my anniversary present, or just silently suck it up and buy another one to replace the broken bird before she notices.

Or try and do a number on the beak with Krazy Glue and hope it passes muster. I could sure use those 6 bills on something more useable than a decoration right now,,,,,,like a pair of killer subwoofers and maybe even a rear centre channel,,,,,,

AAAAHHHHH, The Madness of It All!!!!! I was happy with a 32 inch JVC flat screen CRT fer Chrissakes! What the Hell happened to me??!?!?

You caught the same bug we all have, it's contagious this HT thing.

Rickster: you are not kidding, I am so excited to get a new PC. I started researching last night and man have things changed since a year ago when I got the PC I am using now. it was a $99 black Friday special at Frys, it actually is a great computer. But you know newer, faster.....and that 22 inch LCD! The desk is such a perfect fit it really is amazing. It will completely fill the space from left to right and is only 19.5 inches deep so it will be totally recessed in the space. The height is great too at 62 inches, the closet opening is about 77 inches so that will leave me a foot of space. I plan on installing track lighting or some sort of lighting at the top of the closet opening which will illuminate the work area. The only issue I see with track lighting is that it is very directional and incandescent. So it might put out a lot of heat and too much light in certain spots. To combat these issues another idea I am toying with is to put some lighting up inside the closet all the way at the top, maybe a flourescent sort of shop light. Then this will provide a very nice gentle, diffuse, even illumination of the area.

It's interesting the last time I bought a nice PC was for my first HT 3 years ago. I used it as a HTPC for DVD playback. Now that the Oppo is so amazing I wouldn't even bother with an HTPC. It was a PITA to use and I never used it for anything but DVD playback. I am not a gamer at all so this time I wanted simplicity, turn it on and it plays, period.

Update: I just spent the better part of 2 hours in my HT watching all sorts of DVD's and HD TV. I don't know how to put into words how exquisite the experience was. The picture from the HD70 is remarkable both on the Oppo 971H at 720p and on HDTV at 1080i via component. The sound system is crystal clear, I have NO hollowness or unnaturalness to voices. Music is sublime, the bass, oh the bass! I am just in utter awe of this equipment. And the Showtime leather recliners, OMG could anything be more comfortable?

I did find myself wishing for 1 remote though and realized that for the entire 2 hours I was in there I used just a few keys on each remote. Maybe a universal is in my future after all? On Universal HD they were running some HD trailers, eegads did those look good! And Discovery HD also looked fabulous. But what took the cake was watching storytellers on MTV in full surround sound, what an experience-I was in heaven and I am not a big DIxie Chicks fan but I couldn't turn it off.

I could not be happier with the room or the gear, everything is 100% recommended without a milligram of hesitation. Whoever would not be happy with this is simply impossible to please.
Congratulations on your pleasing theater.

On the remote front I think I will risk sounding like everybody else here by recomending a Harmony. The only way I would waver from the 8XX crowd is to suggest that you take a look at the 550, or the Harman Kardon TC 30. I picked up the 550 about 4 months ago and haven't had a lasting complaint about it yet (any time I think there is a problem I later find solution.) I picked the 550 because of the layout, the transport keys (play, pause, stop...) are all placed where I can reach them when only using one hand, on the 8XX series they are at the bottom and I don't think it would be comfortable. The HK is a Harmony with HK branding, the layout is like the 550, but the LCD is from the 8XX series so it is color and has more buttons. The only thing I regret about my Harmony is that it isn't quite as cool as it could be, that color screen with the icons instead of the text on the monochrome screen is pretty frickin awsome if you ask me.

Whichever Harmony you choose I am sure it would make you happy once you figure out a good setup for it.

Again, Congratulations.

Thanks Brian, I am leaning towards the 880 but having a very tough time swallowing the cost. I did realize that I have 2 more remotes to control than I originally thought;

1-Ceiling fan
2-Computer closet overhead lighting will be controlled by a wireless module probably from Radio Shack, already found it in Logitech's supported devices list.

Great that you are enjoying the HT. One thing I tried out last night (it was free) was Spy Kids 3-D. I sat there with my little 3-D glasses on and was surprised how much the effect worked. Yes with the red/blue 3-D glasses you lose all color depth, but the spatial depth was a good trade off.

The movie itself isn't very good, so I'm looking for some good 3D movies now. 100" screen makes a huge difference on 3D movies compared to my old 36" 4:3 TV.
Travis,
Is Spykids 3-D a DVD or a broadcast program? Last Season on NBC's Medium they had a 3-D episode that was really good with the 3-D glasses. I ended up watching it a couple times.

It is a DVD that was given to me. My niece and nephew will probably get a kick out of it...now if I could only find the IMAX 3D in the same 3D format.

Wow is picking a Harmony remote difficult! They have too many models to choose from. throw the Harmon kardon TC30 into the mix and it is utter confusion.

I found the TC30 for $110 shipped, that is tempting. I would rather go with a Logitech branded harmony however. I like the 550 and the 676.

Any more advice or thoughts?
