I was very happy with my SP404 and then something wierd happened.
I put in the DVE calibration DVD, everything was looking great until I got to the Overscan calibration screen (also used for sharpness). I noticed that my tv (Samsung HLS5679w) had the expected 2.5% overscan on top, bottom, and left. But for some reason, the right hand side showed a 5% overscan.
At first I thought it was the TV, I even went into the service menu to correct the X/Y position. That's when I noticed the TV was fine, and the problem was with the source picture. It was physically missing the right 5% of the image.
Just to be sure I tried another player, and a different DVD. Error was definately with the SP404. I then tried reducing the upconversion from 1080i to 720p and the problem got a little better...maybe only 3% missing. At 480p there was about 2% missing, and when the Onkyo was set to 480i, the whole frame came through.
Needless to say, if the only way to get the right side of the picture to appear, was to set the player to 480i, then I might as well just use my 5 year old sony which it was meant to replace.
At this point, I made the decision to return the player. I now no longer own one, I've got an Oppo on order (peer pressure)
Anyway. I'm thinking I probably just got a bum unit, but up until then, I was very happy with it. Colors were true, Divx worked great, and the calibration menu was nice.
