1394 HDD as PVR?

Ive been reading the Mitsubish 65732 manual and it suggests I can record programming over its firewire interface to an external harddrive. It has all the controls and TVGuide schedules and software built into the TV to do this.

Is this true? Can I attached an external drive and just use the TVs features to record and playback? I assume for HDTV too since its a 1080p.

Or is this a special dedicated DVR or PVR thats needed. The manual says it senses the device and I assume then it would format the drive if my hopful guess is true.

Any experience there?
thanks!

I have a Samsung HLR 5067 and I want to record OTA HD. I need to cut back on my cable for awhile and only need to record the OTA HD channels for now. My TV also has a built in TV guide and I can record to a firewire device. Does anyone have experience with the Samsung/PVR combo using it in this manner?
