I figured on something like that. A $400 difference was pretty tempting though... Oh wel...

anyone able to use HDMI with the Toshiba A1 HD-DVD player? i connect hdmi cable from the player to the Projector and get no picture
post #549 of 4544
FWIW the only way to evaluate and then report your convergence correctly is viewing a projected full panel "crosshatch pattern". AVIA, generator etc.

Someone above asked how's my convergence. It's surprisingly tight and I'm very very pleased. No more than a 1/4 Red pixel off (vert lines) above G, B across the screen and in all the corners.
I hope Panosonic is QC'ing all units this good before shipment, if so it would be a first at any price point.
By the way, new owners of any 3 chip LCD/LCOS or DLP projector should examine their convergence and Gray uniformity (exception DLP uniformity) first before watching any video material. If either is not satisfactory (within reason) you should notify the vendor and insist getting an exchange unit.

Check in the "Optiions" Menu on the Panosonic. If HDMI is an hilighted item change it's setting then restart the pj and the HD player. My HD DVD works swimingly and outputs a fantastic image. Use only 1080i from the player unless you have installed the 2.O upgrade, if so set the player to 720p.

How long is you HDMI/DVI cable run ?

I was initially disappointed when I discovered this, but I hear it's pretty much ubiquitous and I can't tell from any type of seating distance at all...

Through PM, I was also told by some that misconvergence is also there in AX100 (and in other LCD projectors as well with varying degrees). Probably this is some sort of quality control limit with today's panels, components, focusing prism, etc. Since most haven't noticed it, it probably is seen only from very close distances with some text material (like subtitles, menu text) being displayed.
will do after lost, all I got before was a blue screen.
One more convergence hint.
If the vertical lens shift is set at one extreme on the other this will slightly throw off convergence.
Only test convergence with the lens shift in it's center position for best results.
Jimmy thanks. In your experience with LCD projectors if the convergence is ok when you get the unit does it stay that way, or can it drift over time ?

EDIT:
My experience if new is OK then no shift or not at all noticible (holy cow I had to edit this 3 time so it made sense .

My "shift" here is over now, I'm going to badger tvted via PM.

Mount it as near as possible, leaving a little room as fudge-factor.

OK so I'm at PJC playing with the projector calculator on the AX100

Placing it at 14ft on a 103" diag screen using a gain of 3.0 (for a Vutec Silverstar, I like this screen for it's wide viewing angle, punch and good blacks) it's giving me an image brightness of 70fl, is that even watchable ?

I don't understand your logic. A nice gray 0.8 screen (18FtL) makes a whole lot more sense to me!
I would worry less about ftl calculations and more about the convenience of placement within your room. We agonize in here about statistics and calculations to squeeze that last .00001% performance out of a projector, instead of sitting back and enjoying the other 99.9999% with a smile.

i havent watched standard dvds yet, (havent really watched anything just some HD trailers from xbox 360, I am waiting on my screen (carada Brilliant White 92' inch screen) Anyone watch any SD DVDS on the Toshiba HD-DVD player yet? How do they look on this projector?

How does a DVD like King Kong look on a 92" screen? Do DVDS still look pretty good at this size? I know King Kong on our 38 inch tv King Kong looked amazing for a SD dvd how does it look on a 92 inch screen and on the AX100?
I am very excited about this projector. If you seen one in Atlanta let me know where.

btw, check out this aussie review and see how it compares to a plasma tv. WOW.

"Big Bright, Plasma TV killer it's simply an AE900 on steroids."
Yes at last. Tested the loan unit (production model). Loved it! No noticible blur. Very sharp images compared to AE900, noticible contrast diference between the 2 units when running parrallel (not sure if 1:6000 would be noticible over 1:5500) so it may also have to do with the extra lumens. I put an order in within days of test unit, and recieved my very OWN unit last Friday. Big plus is the brightness/contrast and for personally the sharpness is wow! I must have got used to the softness of the 900, but this baby rocks! Only disappointment is the size of the unit (if that worries anyone) its quite a bit bigger than the 900 (most probably to kep noise levels down). Dosn't worry me, however, mine is being installed in a bulkhead cieling....no one will know where the picture is coming from. Don't forget your 50+ sunscrean and sun glasses when viewing, I came out with a tan after watching a movie on the weekend. Yours truly. Rustydylan.

So if a Canadian imports this from the US, are we stuck with no warranty or do we just have to pay shipping for any warranty work? I noticed one site is selling the japanese version with 15 day defect guarantee, that's tempting as it's enough time to check for convergence which is my main reason for wanting a warranty. The Japanese OSD would be annoying though I'm sure. Why can't Panasonic have a North American warranty like Epson? That would make things much easier.

Maingog you will love the Carada bw screen,I am using a 110in bw with the ax100 and the HD-DVD,Regular dvd's have never look so good.Infact they are almost as good as the HD dvd's IMHO.I tried the superbit 5TH Element and it is so sharp,Kingkong is unreal,Also KK is coming out in Nov in HD-DVD.I really like the ae900 and it has a great pic'But the ax-100 is just plain better in all aspects. It should be for the money.Well off to work.BUDDA

What will the price for the lamp be?
Had my AX100 for two days, replacing my 18 month-old AE700. You really cannot beat this projector for the combination of PQ, brightness and placement flexibility. I am projecting from 18' on to a 106" Da-Lite 1.0 gain screen. The brightness even in cinema 1 mode is outstanding. In normal mode it can light my entire basement!

I watched Aeon Flux in HD from my HD-XA1 and an upconverted The Rock, both via HDMI. From 10.5' viewing distance the picture was very bright, with no visible pixels and better black levels and sharpness over my AE700. The upconverted DVD was the best SD video I have ever seen on any of my set-ups (42" plasma, 65" pio elite CRT) With this PJ I can really notice a substantial improvement for HD-DVD over bit-starved HD on satellite. Before the difference was only subtle.

People can argue DLP all they want, but it just will not work with my room layout. With this PJ, you can now buy with confidence knowing it will look very good in almost any placement or lighting enviroment.

Can anyone confirm if the mounting holes of the AX100 are the same as the 500/700/900?
I just got my AX100 yesterday. This is my third projector but my first LCD. The previous two were DLP units, a Sharp XR-10X and an NEC LT260K.

First impression is that this is not as large an improvement over the Sharp and the Sharp was over the NEC.

Still, it produces a very nice image. Virtually invisible pixels, as all the reviewers have said. Bright and crisp, decent blacks, really easy setup and, of course, no rainbows.

First, I want to note that I was concerned over the image missing the rightmost edge of the screen when connecting an Xbox 360 over VGA cables. I was able to fix this with the AX100 position menu.

I already have two Carada screens, one Brilliant White and one High Contrast Gray. Both of these screens are 4:3 and I want a 16:9 screen to go with this projector. I generally prefer the darker blacks of the HC Gray, but colors really pop nicely under ideal conditions with the BW. Under non-ideal conditions, however, I feel the BW image looks washed out.

The flip side is that the HC Gray dims the image significantly, and has a less consistent surface than the BW. I'm still undecided on this.

The projector is very quiet. In fact, even with the bulb on Normal, I have yet to hear the fan. Of course, with an XBox 360 jet engine right next to it, nothing is going to make much noise in comparison.

I was told that if there would be any vertical banding, that I would not see it out of the box. Rather, it would manifest itself after sitting in standby overnight. I checked this morning, and didn't see any VB. I'll check again tonight after work.

There is a moderate red glow on the right of the image and a moderate blue glow on the left. Mostly noticeable on a white test pattern. This would be the biggest flaw I saw, and is something I can certainly live with.

Overall I'm very happy thus far. This is certainly the best projector I've ever owned, although I continue to be impressed with the Sharp. My biggest decision now is which screen material to pick. If anyone has experience with the Carada Classic Cinema White I'd like to hear it.

No they are not. The chassis is larger than the AE900 and the recessed mounting points are in different locations. I had a custom mount built for the AE900 and was able to re-use one of the mounting points, but needed to drill 3 new holes for the others.

My experience is the same as yours with the HC Gray--really compromises the "pop" of the image. I tried the samples of Carada and found the BW about the same as my 1.5 BW from Vutec. When it was all over, I sprung for a 110" Vutec Silverstar and have been "wowed" ever since. You can get a sample of the SS from Vutec.

I have yet to understand how anyone gets a kick out of watching anything on a gray screen. Ok I guess if you want drab, dull pictures!!!!
