Just wanted to thank you for sharing your settings with all of us. I have tried both and they are really spectacular!! However, the only adjusment I made on the 360 settings, was that I boosted the picture to 60 and the sharpness to 45. And to my eyes it is the perfect picture. Awsome!!! Thanks again

I hope sometime soon you post PS3 setings.

I assume you mean you boosted color to 60 as I too increased my color
setting to 58 and this helped greatly. Color for gaming is all about preference.

Some people like it very saturated and others don't.

I don't have a PS3 yet so it might take a while.

Hi petmic10,

Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your settings!

I am using them on my 40XBR2.

Cheers...

petmic10,

I am certainly not the first and hopefully won't be the last to thank you for posting your XBR2 settings and for being an all round good sport in answering the numerous questions posed by fellow XB2 owners. *Tips his hat*

I just picked up a 40XBR2 to replace my 50 toshiba CRT. I managed to get it for a very good price. I am thoroughly happy with my purchase and even more so after applying your settings.

One note I'd like to add on the highly anticipated and much demanded mythical 360 HDMI cable , is that is such a cable will likely have many technical and political hurdles to overcome.

Assuming the technical issues can be resolved, I don't expect to see something until next year at the earliest.

In the meantime my pre-order for PS3 (delayed by the last minute Gamestop shipment cuts) may arrive this week. I'll post my settings / findings when and if this happens.

Does anyone know if I should be using the Xbox360 at 720p or 1080i? Im trying to understand which is best to either do it at 720p because its progressive and let the tv handle the rest or use 1080i because its a 1080 unit (but then its not p so it adds the option of using tv mode but you get get 1:1 mapping). I cant quite work out if 720p is smoother or not as well so if someone can shed some light on which is best to use for the least scaling etc... would be much appreciated. Also anyone got any comments on the game mode whether its worth enabling or not? Spent 16hours since yesterday tweaking with it and I think Im nearly their so can chill tommorow night and play games and watch a film finally

So far Ive got it tweaked like this (with a little help from petmic10 settings)

720p 360

1080i
I'm not sure if this belongs here, but I think it does, since it's sort of a setting. Here's the problem.

When I first got the TV, I didn't do the Auto-program, because it said it would take 50 minutes, and that I could do it later anyway. So, I've been trying to do it for the past couple days, but the option is grayed out. How can I enable the option, and then start the programming?

Also, after doing this, will it show the program title when I press Display on the TV remote? If not, what enables that?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Petmic10, i want to thank you for sharing your settings, this set is AMAZING with your settings. OTA looks excellent...even 1080p content from PC dvi-hdmi looks WOW, im speechless....im coming from the kdl-40v2500 to the xbr2, and to clarify, the picture...color...quality is a lot better on the xbr2 when compared to the v2500.

Thank you once again petmic

Now the only think i need to figure out is how to make text look good when using it as an HTPC....its not very clear.

Edit: Also, only on NBC, there's a yellow line about 1 pixel or so wide on the left hand side....its set to full pixel but the options below it to move it left/right are greyed out...going to normal causes overscan so i wanna stay at full pixel...any way to fix that (this is for OTA)?

i seem to be a bit lost with the service mode. hope someone can help or point me to the right place

when i get in i see two lines of green text that look something like this:

s_ccpx 4 ---------------------- service
fmtlev_y1 --------------------- 0 tv micro

using 1 and 4 to go to next and back

none of the other lists look any more legible than what's typed above.

am i doing something wrong?

haven't changed any values yet.

i requested the codes in the bruzzi thread. is that all i need?
Forgot to add the euro model only allows 1080p via hdmi NOT component or vga so thats why I need a bit of help with the deinterlacing/fast moving scene questions between 1080i and 720p.

Cheers Dazzy

For watching BluRay movies the settings should be the same as I posted for my Toshiba HD-DVD player.

For playing games on your PS3 use the same settings but you might want to bump the color control and maybe the picture control up a few notches.

The only problem you will have is physically changing these settings depending
on when you watch a movie or play a game. Thats why I was never a fan
of combo units like this and I prefer a stand alone player to have on its own
independent input.

1080i

Those are some nice pics.

If it helps I use 1080i and I haven't noticed any problems with motion blurring but
i'm sure 720p would be just as good.

I've always come to understand that 720p is better for playing games and
1080i is better for still images and watching movies.

No problem. Enjoy your TV.

Unfortunately, I believe that is more of an NBC problem and there is nothing
you can do but set it to normal.
I have the same problem with my INHD channel from Cablevision and I just
set it to Full Pixel and learned to live with it.

Funny you mention that. My wife recently asked me why Sony would not manufacture their tvs with callibration settings closer to yours? Why not just have them default to settings more in your neighborhood?

Does anyone have an opinion as to how you should adjust the infamous petmic settings if you turn the Light Sensor on (I assume he had it off)? There's been some previous discussion on the thread as to whether it actually works but, assuming that it does, I very much like the concept.

As others have noted, the immediate effect when turning it on is to dim the display. Should you just bump brightness up to compensate? or backlight?

Thanks

i guess i was jumping the gun

i just got the sony set so i haven't gotten too familiar with the ins and outs. are you saying all your adjustments are in the user menu? i saw the "advanced" section and assumed it was inside the service menu. if not that's wonderful. i can't wait to give it a try!

That would make everything so much easier. It would be nice if they included
a factory calibrated setting in the settings menu.

Unfortunately they set the brightness, backlight, and contrast extremely high
so is stands out on a showroom floor in a Best Buy or Circuit City.

There is no need to go into the service menu, all adjustments are made in
the user menu. The best thing Sony did was take the White Balance(grayscale)
control out of the service menu.

Use my settings you won't be disappointed.

I have the same question. I by-passed this option as I was concerned about whether my new set would have the clouding issues reported in the other thread (I don't believe it does, but I also am not sure I know what to look for - maybe ignorance is bliss ).

Anyway, anyone know how to run the auto-program in this situation?

Settings on one set may not be the best for another. They will probably be better than just adjusting by eye...at least it will be an improvement over the factory defaults but I'm sure that each set will have different settings if they are professionally calibrated. You can bet that there are certain tolerances that the electronics and screens have which means that they will vary from set to set which is what keeps the calibrators working. I'm sure that if it were that easy to "factory" calibrate these to one set of settings standards that all the major comanies would be doing it...and advertising the fact. The settings given here do not look that good on my 46" XBR2...whites are not pure white and the colors do look all that accurate. I'm comparing the picture on my XBR2 that was professionally calibrated about 6 weeks ago in the service menu for the "standard" picture setting. The adjustments were not made for the "custom" setting on my set so I can visually compare the settings given here to my set's own calibrated setting and on my set there is a large difference between the two. It all boils down to what your eye sees...not mine or anyone else's and I'm sure that Petmic's settings go a long way to getting a good picture on a lot of the sets with a minimal amount of time spent trying all the thousands of possible combinations. Like they say "YMMV".

yeah it looks like i can't run the inital setup anymore. i tried the auto program, but its not finding anything.
cinemotion is greyed out (and set to off) when using OTA Antenna, is that right?

Also, when i have my pc connected with dvi->hdmi i switch from input 3 to OTA Antenna....and then switch back to input 3, it doesnt display anything, i have to press Fn+F8 (for laptop) and then it appears again.

Cheers Petmic10, I just wanted to double check before I settle down and stop tweaking and relax (Im one of these what spend days tweaking till I get it perfect then watch films etc... on it). 1080i it is then for 360

"Full Pixel" vs. "Normal"

I understand that FP doesn't cut off any of the broadcasted image and that normal can clean up edges and such. That's not my question.

My question is:

Is there a difference in PQ if one chooses FP over N? For example, on ESPN HD when a basketball game is on, in N mode it fills the panel horizontally but in FP mode there is a significant left/right horizontal black bar increase. In that example, am I:

a) Seeing the 'true' image in FP mode and N is a 'zoom in' thus creating distortion.

-or-

b) Seeing a 'condensed' image in FP mode and N is the way it's supposed to be viewed.

Like all of us, I want the very best PQ on the set, but on NBC using FP adds the left size green line and on ESPN it's making the viewable area smaller and adding black bars.

Help.

BJ

entered your setting petmic10. the pq is great!!

i have a question. i do notice a bit more green in dark scenes which were (i think) not there before. maybe because i have a preference for a cooler picture, usually setting the temp to "neutral". do you think the greenish tint is in my mind because i'm so used to cooler settings?

what would you suggest? i'm loving the overall picture by the way. seeing much nicer skin tones and blush in cheeks.

There is a huge difference going from Neutral to Warm 1 in color temp..

It's perfectly natural to notice something like you have when you make a drastic
change. Give it a few days and let your eyes become accustomed to the new
settings.
