Many people use D-Nice's settings... they should be a good starting point.

Films that use letter box were processed in (generally) a 2.40:1 aspect ratio, hence the balck bars required to keep that aspect ratio, when displaying on a 16x9 display.

See this Wiki for more information:

But, there is nothing wrong with your panel, nor the players. It's all about how the film was processed and produced for disc.

Thanks that's kind of what I was thinking and you just confirmed it.

As long as everything is working fine on my new 1140 I thought I'd post a
"hey Pio, what were you thinking?" comment.
Ok, so we've got this beautiful, all black panel, front and back. So what color speaker wires do they supply?
Why, WHITE, of course. Duh....

Funny funny.... I think that's changed with the 8G's.... I believe my 150FD had black speaker wires.

After six months of use I can't get the HDMI inputs to work on my 1540. I have tried new cables both cheap and expensive ones. Both the cable box and DVD are working as I connected those using s-video. In the TV menu I have the input set to auto. Could the HDMI connectors on the TV have gone Bad? Help!!! Thanks ...GR

Hey 1140/1540 owners.

Do you prefer the speakers mounted with the "air gap" or "flush" to the panel ?
I did the air gap only because I was in a hurry and didn't want to take the time to apply the strips to the speakers (what's their purpose anyway, to prevent scratchs or to insulate the panel from vibration ?
It only took me 30 seconds to apply that strip for the speakers.
IMO.. "flush to the panel" looks way better than air gap..

Yea, but I was already a half hour late, so every second counted.
oops....gotta go.

Ruvic, I agree, flush does look better.

Why are you guys even using the panel speakers?

I wish my 940 had a removable speaker.

Well, I'm using them for the time being because the panel is temporarily set up in our living room during break in, and until I sell the 40" Mits CRT that's in our den.
BTW, re the white spkr wires, in my previous post, #2645, I called Pio today and was told that is the ONLY color they use because it's the industry standard.
Somehow, I suspect that's not true !

I use flush and the reason I have my speakers on my 1140 and 150 is because sometimes I just want to turn on the TV to the tuner via Ant A so having the speakers on works for that.

The 1140 no longer has a receiver with it, because the 150 took that spot, but still use it with out the full sound system quite often.

That's a good idea, I might just consider connecting up that way. I always run through my AVR, but sometimes it might be nice to NOT power everything up, jsut to watch the news or something.

I mean, I have no choice... my speaker is part of the panel... might as well take advantage of that

Edit: Sorry, I guess that's why they include spacers with the mount.

Nevermind.........

I finished setting up my wife's uncle's home theater yesterday. His gear: 1540, BDP-94HD, VSX-90TXV. Watching HD programming, his screen is filled. Some movies don't fill the screen though. Armageddon was matted on the screen. Kind of like the widescreen commercials that come on during HD programs. It had black bars at the sides and at the top and bottom. I set his picture mode to Pure and used D-Nice's picture settings. Is it possible to expand the picture in this mode? I also put in "The Incredibles" and it looked ok. Thin bars at the top and bottom but its ratio is wider than the screen. Which screen size do I need to select to get movies like Armageddon to fill the screen as much as possible? I tried switching the resolution the DVD player sends to the screen but to no avail.
Armageddon is non-anamorphic so you will have to use the size button and switch to ZOOM. It is 2.35:1 so you will still have bars on top/bottom but not on the sides. Any movie that has an aspect ratio great than 1.78:1 will have black bars on the top/bottom. You can use zoom for anamorphic dvd's (which most dvd's are) but you will be cutting off parts of the picture.

Guys, I would appreciate any input.

Over the last couple weeks I have had a noticeable loss in my picture quality on my elite 1140. The picture still looks good but nothing like it used to be.

I see alot of fuzziness aournd writing like channel logos or espn ticker. I also notice more distortion when images move alot. Not pixelation but just not sharp detail like it used to be. Even the closing credits on movies that used to be sharp and crystal clear seem kinda fuzzy with maybe a flicker.

I have noticed several times when I get home the light on the front that is normally red when off is flashing blue. Is that an indication that something is wrong?

I have had the panel for almost 12 months and am discouraged by the lack of detail that I have been enjoying.

Has anyone had problems similar to this? Do you guys think I should call pioneer and get it checked out?

Thanks for any opions.

Absolutely call Pioneer. It is still under warranty. What you describe is *not* normal. There is some rhyme & reason to the flashing light, although I am not sure what it means. It could be an "error code" of sorts.

I would get Pioneer out to test and see what's up with your panel.

Would anyone choose a 5080 over a PRO-1140?

I was looking to get a 5080, but a local retailer has the 1140 available on sale for a very, very good price.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I prefer the Elites, so on the surface the 1140 seems like the way to go. However, the new Kuro's are so much better than the older generation panels, that the 5080 is most likely a better panel than the 1140.

It all comes down to what you want & how much - like everything.

IMHO.
For the same price, I'd probably opt for the 5080. The jump from the non-Elite to the Elite is small (IMHO), but the jump from a non-KURO to a KURO is bigger. If that makes sense.......so I'd rather than have a non-Elite KURO rather than an Elite non-KURO.

I faced that same decision last month and opted to go w/the 1140. It
was just too big a price difference to justify the little difference that I could see in the blacks.
The savings paid for a nice BDI 8525 stand and a Blu Ray player + $ left over.

HI EVERYONE !!!!!!!!!

I had trouble with my Pro 1140 Elite around 10-21-2007.

Through normal coaxial cable feed, certain stations, roughly seven of them were not giving me sound. It was really weird. The set was bought one year ago 11/2006.

I phoned Pioneer, and they had me do a check by using my VCR tuner to Input 1. By doing this, I was able to get sound from those stations. These showed that the problem was the Pioneer tuner.

Well, since Pioneer did not have a real 'local', authorized repair person, I had to deal with a person from near Philadelphia. Since he was an independent solo repair guy, hea had me WAIT two weeks before he came and fixed it!!

He took nearly 100 screws off the backpanel. Took out a tuner, replaced with one the Pioneer people sent him, buttoned it up, and now it is good as new.

I hope this helps other people with this problem. I read in here someone had a problem with the picture quality deminishing......hope this is not a start of a trend in tuner related issues, I got one more year with no after 2 year warranty.

***Does anyine know if I can purchase one now, I will call Pioneer and see if they can sell me one. The guy who repaired my set said that this service call would have cost me around $800.00

Thank You............Robert
Robert....hopefully you purchased the set using an AMEX card. That would add a third year.
No, did not buy with AMEX. I am going to look into Pioneer, and see if I
can Purchase from them...........let you guys know.

I just wanted to chime in on my buying the 1140 vs waiting for the newer KURO versions. I've wanted an Elite for years (even when they were rear projection). When Tweeter was unloading the 940's/1140's in the Spring I knew it was time. Now into 6 months of ownership I'm glad I did and do NOT have remorse for not waiting for the newer models. Thanks to all on this forum who've offered advice.
Is there any way to improve SD viewing???? thx
post #2670 of 2813
Any owners of the 940 ever do any power measurements of it? I am on a kick to see how much I pay in electricity for all of my electronics (quite an eye opening process here in expensive SoCal). I bought a Kill A Watt meter and have been using it on everything I own, but the power cord for my 940 is inside the wall and thus not accessible. I would really like to know how many watts this thing pulls when turned on. The manufacturer specs are not real world specs and usually are quite different from my measurements.
