I can understand that comment being made about Derek or Mark.

But Tony, who has a hot young wife and new baby, to the best of my knowledge has never dated any of the contestants. I don't even recall him flirting with Stacy Keebler or Melissa.

Perhaps you're thinking of Maks?

I agree, IMO Tony always seems to get stick with the duds, for that reason I suppose he could get PO'd but he seems like a real trooper

No, I could say that, but for some reason I was under the impression that Tony was using each season of the show, as I said, as a "dating opportunity".

It really wasn't a slam at Tony; I was also under the impression that he wasn't married or going with anyone, so it was just what I thought would be an amusing observation.

I don't know how I got that impression, perhaps it was of someone else or it was prior to him getting married, but I certainly didn't mean to denigrate him in any way (I see enough of this kind of thing already).

So Tony, if you're reading, I apologize. And to the extent that Mac's observations of your behavior are accurate, you've got a new fan.

Thanks for the info, Mac.

Actually he has three kids and lives in the same city I do.

A technical note for the next season of DWTS: The backhauls from the studio facility in LA to ABC NY master control will now include an uncompressed 1.5 Gbs connection. This is the same path that was used for the Academy Awards.
That's good news.... I hope. While DWTS has always had decent PQ, I wouldn't rate it at the top either. I'll be looking forward to any improvement.
^^^ Unfortunately, I doubt that increasing the size of the backhaul pipe will help us end users very much.

The huge amount of detail on the costumes and all the fast motion plays havoc with the encoder so as soon as they have to stuff it into an ATSC sized pipe it all goes to hell.

Hopefully I'll be wrong. Because I'd sure enjoy seeing less motion blur.
Even with higher bitrate MPEG encoded backhauls, there is still some degradation that can affect subsequent encoding. This will drop the encodes from three to two. Still this show uses smoke effects and it's difficult to get and maintain the proper balance between enough for the lighting but not too much to make it hazy.

And you still have the O&O stations with the Live Well HD subchannel taking away bits from the main channel.
WE have the Live Well HD destroying channel as well as a Weather feed. Yay for macroblocking!

Just wanted y'all to know I'm firmly behind Erin Andrews this season:

Shannen Doherty (shown above with Mark in a cute pic after "a looooooong day of press and rehearsal," via TwitPic), chats with George Lopez about her DWTS experience (and whether to get a spray tan):

EDIT: I had to copy and paste the image URL again because it wasn't there tonight when I came back.

EDIT 2: Same problem happened today; I simply copied the pic to my hard drive and then uploaded it to Photobucket.

Wow - great video. Touching and hilarious.

I saw clips of Evan and Chad practising on one of the entertainment shows a couple of days ago. Evan looked surprisingly stiff and Chad looked surprisingly good.

Chad also made a comment that he "used to be a stripper". I couldn't tell if he was just joking, but he did seem to be much more comfortable than I'd expect.

I'm thinking it might be Chad and Nicole, the two strippers, battling it out in the finals this season.

Everything Chad says is BS... Now you know.

Anyway, just bumping the thread to remind everyone to check their DVRs and make sure they're ready to roll on Monday.

I'll go along with that. Even though it was a few seconds, if anyone saw Chad's 'Riverdance' TD celebration, it seems he has some talent for dancing or, at least humor.

Yeah, I think Cheryl might have a legitimate shot at that third mirror ball this season.

It's Monday, March 22.

And so it begins....

My wife, who is not the HD nerd I am, called me downstairs to see the pic quality of this year's edition. So I go to look at it and wow!

Have they done something this year that makes it look even better than last year? I admit it could be our imagination, but man, it really looks impressive.
Yes-they turned up the bitrate to around 15 Mbps, compared to 9-12 Mbps in previous year(s).
Imagine that-bitrate does to improve picture quality.

New graphics to match what we've seen in the commercials.

Brooke appeared a little stiff, but it's her first week, give her a chance.

Buzz is stiff, but he is 80 years old, and probably an early darling of the phone vote set.

Aiden looks like the first to go unless he suddenly improves next week.

I thought Melissa Rycroft was supposed to be the hostess this season. While I have nothing against Brooke, I think Melissa's bubbly personality would lend itself better to hosting the show than Brooke did last night.
Liked the celebs being in the room overlooking the dance floor. Didn't like the moniker celebriquarium.

Let's give Brooke 4 or 5 shows to get in a rhythm. She just looked a bit nervous and seemed to force a few things. We’ll know in a few weeks whether we miss Samantha or not.

I know we say this every year (almost every year) but it seems like this is going to be a hotly contested year. I’ll be honest, I needed a cigarette after Pamela danced and I don’t smoke. She was pretty funny too. All in all a good first night.
Can you believe it has been 20 years since Pamela was a "playmate?"
Best of the night IMO: Evan, Erin and Nicole. OTOH, Kate and Pam, the two contestants with the most buzz coming in, were at best so-so.

M.J. Santilli's recap and performance videos here:

Anyone care to guess what "mood enhancer" Pam was on last night?
Nicole looked smoking hot, wow.

Pam looked she was going to have sex with her partner right there in front of everyone, she looked really aggressive.

I personally like this mix of "celebs". Good start to the season.

While really a statistical tie, DWTS beat American Idol's Tuesday show from last week by a slim margin for total viewers: 23.79 vs 23.44 million. Idol won in the demo but not by nearly as much as it has in the past. Amazing that DWTS is now one season ahead of Idol (10 vs 9) and has its biggest premiere while Idol is slowly fading. Both shows have been HD for most of their run, but with the amount of cleavage on DWTS I think it's time for it to go to the next step: 3D! That ought to sell a few TVs
