After trying for over an hour to reset/revive this unit, I declared it dead. It's on it's way back to Amazon as of 30 mins ago. I requested a refund. My plan it to wait for M$ to work the bugs out or for a standalone player to fall to an acceptable price range.

Can anyone recommend an articulating arm mount that will hold this panel? Will any of the single-stud mounts rated to 80 pounds max work with this panel, or do I need to get a beefier mount? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I just bought the 4095 myself, and was reading through all the posts. I haven't seen a reply to your question about which articulating arm has been used or suggested. Was wondering if anyone's responded to you privately?

Sorry if this question was asked before but i currently own a SHARP 42D62U and i know i want to return it within the 30 day period at a FUTURESHOP here in Canada.

Although the viewing angles are horrid and some units have banding issues my question is if anyone knows whether the samsung LNS4095/96 SD/analog feeds are as good as SHarps SD/analog feeds.

the Sharp produces very clear and good pic for SD and HD...if not for the banding and horrid viewing angles i would keep this TV.

I am almost 100% ready to buy the samsung LNS4095/96 but am not sure of the SD/analog viewing on this TV....

i thank everyone in advance for all the information and help you guys have given me.
SD is great on my 4095! As is of course the HD!

Okay guys, after a long-delay caused by the incompetent and misleading company electronics. expo. i have reordered my 4695D today from 'one call'.

So has anyone tried VGA - VGA on their computer? I'm contemplating if I should buy a 15-feet VGA-VGA from monoprice or buy a 15- foot DVI to HDMI cable.

Does VGA input look good for you guys?

Thanks.

I just bought a Samsung-4095D. Does this TV have an in-built upconverter? That is, will regular DVD movies (480p) be automatically upconverted to 1080p?
I'm not prepared to buy an HD-DVD or Blue-ray DVD player yet, but I can buy a regular DVD player with a built-in upconverter if that'll make any difference. Suggestions?

The DVD will definitely be upconverted to 1080p by the 4095 because that is the native rate of the panel. In other words, no matter what you send to the Samsung 4095 it will be converted to 1080p.

The question is will the DVD player or the Samsung do a better job of de-interlacing and scaling a 480i DVD to 1080p?

I have had my 4095D for 4 months, but haven't watched a DVD because of football season. I am, however, considering the Samsung HD-960 DVD player because it de-interlaces and scales all the way to 1080p.

2 items of note for all users.

1. Anyone who tells you that you are wasting your money on an upconverting DVD player because the tv de-interlaces and scales is a moron. The fact is that yes the tv will de-interlace and scale, but it isn't especially good at it. This is why so many users complain that SD looks bad(including me).

2. ALL DVDs are stored as 480i (i = interlaced). A "progressive" DVD player de-interlaces the DVD so that it is progressive. CRTs are interlaced while LCDs and plasmas are progressive.

Yes.

The HD-960 is excellent and produces outstanding pictures.

I just got my A1 today. Why upgrade to 2.0-- is it to just have certain movies play and/or to have True HD? I am running a 2.1 system right now- and i love the sound and sight... (and i know King Kong wont play).

Btw..... certain SD movies will only run at 1080i with an HDMI, not on component.... why is that?

thanks guys

I'd like to know this too. Along with what differences there are in general, whether they be cosmetic, PQ, or feature-based.

Has anyone had the overscan turned off by the technician?

I have a tech coming out to fix my TV. (4696D)

I didn't know they could do that. Is it all or nothing or per connection?
Your help please. Trying to decide between the Samsung 4696 or a Sony KDL46XBR2.

I have viewed both sets. The Sony in different stores. The Sammy 4696 is only available at one store. To my eye the picture quaility in both units is excellent. Connectivity is excellent. Style is excellent. Rignt now I can get the Sony for about $50 more than the Sammy so the price spread is pretty close.

What other factors should I consider before pulling the trigger. Is it down to subjective items like the style of the case and such?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
If you have a 360 than get the samsung. That sony has trouble with the 1080p output from the xbox 360.

A poster named betatesterzz was supposed to have it done last week, but I haven't seen any posts about it. I PM'd him hoping that he will share his results.

I am really curious about this because I want to get an external video processor, but don't want to buy one if I can't get 1:1 pixel mapping.
You sure about that?

Wowee!
My Samsung 4095D is upconverting SD DVD's to 1080i anyway, even though my A1 says that is only showing it at 480p ( i did not realize this earlier)...so... i am going to use my extra component cable rather spring for a new HDMI cable!!

found money....

I just called Samsung about this and they immediately sent me to a level II support technician who told me there is NO such firmware update and that it was NOT possible to defeat the overscan.

Really sucks, because this is the only thing holding me back.

I'm most likely going to order one tonight anyway, but this would have put it over the top.

That said, I went to Best Buy today to look for the overscan and while it's definitely there, it's pretty minimal IMO and I've read plenty of posts that say it won't really matter to you if you're only using it for TV and video games, which I am.

They also had it connected to a Blue-Ray machine and the picture was spectacular.

First, let me thank you all. I've been lurking for weeks and read all the posts in both threads. Wow! That was a lot of reading. At first, I was going to get the JVC. But, because it was not 1080p input capable, I switched to the Sammy.

I just purchased the Sammy 4696 and though I would like to give you (and the remaining lurkers) my opinion. I have Comcast Expanded Basic in Monmouth County, New Jersey. No cable box or antenna. Have yet to adjust anything other than the volume.

The Good: Fantastic display. Bright clear picture with no blurring or artifacts. No dead or stuck pixels. Considering there are only 2 each 10W speakers, the sound isn't bad and it's volume level is adequate for a large room in a quiet house.

The Bad: 1) The processor is very slow. Changing channels using the scan button is tedious. Occasionally, the unit gets stuck on a PPV channel. If that happens, it goes into a strang shutdown (not power off) mode and then restarts and displays the PPV movie. Very strange. 2) The remote must be pointed almost dead on for it to work. 3) You can go to lunch while Autoscan runs. It found 329 channels, most of which were dead air. And 4) The channel manager is a pain in the *** to use if you have a lot of changes to make.

The Ugly: Looked at BB first. Priced it at Elec Expo. Went back to BB and they did a price match less $50. I did (thank G*d) take their delivery option. They specified the date and time and promptly delivered and set it up. BEHOLD!! The wife found a scratch on that beautiful glossy finish. No problem. BB brought a new unit the next morning and took the old one away. We failed to test the new unit and found it had a defective tuner (ghosting on non-D channels 7 and up). Called them and they reordered and scheduled a replacement. But, it will take a week. Thought of changing to an XBR 2 or 3. But BB wouldn't come down in price enough. But, Electronic Expo just put the 4696 on their web site with a low ball sale price. Guess what? BB price matched it and refunded the difference to me.

Let me tell you. Even with the few problems I'm happy with this Sammy. And, even if I had to pay more, doing business with BB is worth it. And yes, with the price match, I have yet to find a cheaper price from any B&M in my area.

Sorry for not having any techie input. I'm an EE and I work in the technology sector. But calibrating a TV is not my passion.

I just brought my 4695 home. I have a question. When you use the volume on the TV, the symbol to the far left seems to have a ghost of the same symbol directly beneath it. Is this normal on all of the sets or is something wrong with mine?

Thanks in advance.

Just got my 4095 today.

This is my first HD set, and I currently don't have any HD sources to show on it. I'm waiting for DirecTV to get their HR20 working properly before I plunge into buying one. I did get an Oppo 971 at the same time as the TV and have been playing with it.

My impressions:

* First and foremost, this is the worst sounding television I have ever owned! It sounds like a $5 FM radio in a sealed cardboard box. I mean it literally makes watching it unpleasant! Make no mistake; the speakers are not defective per se, there is no distortion or anything. They just SUCK! I'm seriously considering plugging my old Boston Acoustics BA635 PC speakers into it until I can find something else.

These things are all midrange and no amount of tweaking the EQ will fix them. While the lack of bass is somewhat understandable, I never expected them to be so totally lacking in any detail whatsoever on the high end. My eleven year-old Sony XBR with detachable satellites and "bass unit" mounted on top sounds like a friggin concert hall compared to this set. Hell my speakerphone sounds better than this thing!

I spent all of my budget on the TV and DVD player, thinking I could live with it until I could get a decent audio system. But this is totally unacceptable and I will now be forced to buy some cheap HTIB or PC speaker system. I CAN'T live with this! It's awful!

Sorry to go on about it, but wow, am I disappointed.

As for picture, that's a mixed blessing. SD off of DirecTV is understandably mediocre to just plain bad. Not the TV's fault though. DVD's off of the Oppo look good, but I'm having a hell of a time with picture adjustments. I can't seem to get a decent black in space scenes on my Battlestar Galactica DVDs without making the on-set scenes look like crap. I'll try some of the settings that people have posted here.

Finally, and most importantly, I seem to have an issue that I'd like to know if anyone else has this too. On a totally black screen (like the commercial break spots on the Galactica DVDs) or very dark scenes, I see splotches of gray scattered around the screen. They look like dark gray clouds airbrushed at random. They're not incredibly obnoxious, but they are quite noticable while watching in a dark room. Brightness and contrast have no effect on them. I can turn the power saver to high, and they are less noticable but they are still there. Anyone have suggestions on this, or is this standard for LCDs?

I don't mean to make this an entirely negative post, but at this point I'm a little frustrated and disappointed in my first foray into HD.

I recently purchased a Sharp 52" and returned it for the Samsung 4695. Overall each one has its pro's and cons but in the end the Sammy won out. I had the good fortune of being able to set both up in my house at the same time(benifit of a non big box electronics store).

The black levels on the Samsung while not quite as good as the Sharp are pretty close in my mind and the shadow detail when watching Batman Seturns(SD) or Sin Sity (HD) was awesome. The color on the Samsung was much better in my mind than the Sharp and much more accurate. My 360 has never looked better and the only time I noticed the overscan was when I compared the 2 sets side by side and even then it wasn't an issue.

For me it was the banding that killed the Sharp ( i looked at at least 10-12 sets on display in varous stores that all showed banding in one form or another). So if the banding was factored out it comes dowm to black levels or accurate color and that is personal preference I guess. The XBR's are nice but they have the "Sony" luxury tax and in my mind the picture quality didn't justify the extra$$$

Just my 2 bits
lwk -

These are very useful 2 bits, given you had a Sharp and Samsung side by side.
Color on my Sammy is too cool unless in movie mode, where DNIe is not available.
Shadow detail is crushed to some extent on my Sammy 5296, you say it equalled Sharp?
What were your settings in the user menu of the Sammy?

Any more details on your comparison would be welcomed.

There is a long thread about this and the Sonys ... search on Sony and cloudy in the title, or scan the last few pages of threads in this forum. Since Samsung makes the panels for both, might be something to learn there.

If you can see them while watching (vs. only when there's no input), that's a problem. But I'm not sure they stay that way ...

And since this forum is so lame and most people won't find it, repost my comment from another thread:

On the topic of firmware, I got this message from someone who I'll thank anonymously just in case that's how they prefer to stay. I can't vouch for any of it, but FWIW:
Quote:

We run [ ] regional service centers and are authorized for both Samsung and Sony. ... The problem described with the PC input not mapping 1:1 is fixed with a new firmware upgrade for the Samung. The firmware update should be available on Samsung's support site by now. If not call the support number and have them send you a CD and the HDMI > 9 pin serial cable needed to do the upgrade from a PC.
