First, let me thank you all. I've been lurking for weeks and read all the posts in both threads. Wow! That was a lot of reading. At first, I was going to get the JVC. But, because it was not 1080p input capable, I switched to the Sammy.
I just purchased the Sammy 4696 and though I would like to give you (and the remaining lurkers) my opinion. I have Comcast Expanded Basic in Monmouth County, New Jersey. No cable box or antenna. Have yet to adjust anything other than the volume. The Good
: Fantastic display. Bright clear picture with no blurring or artifacts. No dead or stuck pixels. Considering there are only 2 each 10W speakers, the sound isn't bad and it's volume level is adequate for a large room in a quiet house. The Bad: 1)
The processor is very slow. Changing channels using the scan button is tedious. Occasionally, the unit gets stuck on a PPV channel. If that happens, it goes into a strang shutdown (not power off) mode and then restarts and displays the PPV movie. Very strange. 2)
The remote must be pointed almost dead on for it to work. 3)
You can go to lunch while Autoscan runs. It found 329 channels, most of which were dead air. And 4)
The channel manager is a pain in the *** to use if you have a lot of changes to make. The Ugly
: Looked at BB first. Priced it at Elec Expo. Went back to BB and they did a price match less $50. I did (thank G*d) take their delivery option. They specified the date and time and promptly delivered and set it up. BEHOLD!! The wife found a scratch on that beautiful glossy finish. No problem. BB brought a new unit the next morning and took the old one away. We failed to test the new unit and found it had a defective tuner (ghosting on non-D channels 7 and up). Called them and they reordered and scheduled a replacement. But, it will take a week. Thought of changing to an XBR 2 or 3. But BB wouldn't come down in price enough. But, Electronic Expo just put the 4696 on their web site with a low ball sale price. Guess what? BB price matched it and refunded the difference to me.
Let me tell you. Even with the few problems I'm happy with this Sammy. And, even if I had to pay more, doing business with BB is worth it. And yes, with the price match, I have yet to find a cheaper price from any B&M in my area.
Sorry for not having any techie input. I'm an EE and I work in the technology sector. But calibrating a TV is not my passion.
