anyhow if i can get the p363s on sale from frys is this a worthy upgrade from the pioneers? i can always sell the pioneers or give maybe give to a family member.

or if there is a thread comparing both systems id like a link to it.

I don't know about the 1st gen pioneers, but the 2nd gen pioneer is inferior to my ears. The pioneer is lacking is many areas to the primus series. The pioneer towers can not match the p363 dynamics, midrange, bass punch, extension. Also, the pioneers had excessive sibilance in the tweeters with a noticeable tipped highs. The sibiliance was a deal breaker for me, I might have kept if it wasn't for that. However, I'm glad it did have the sibilance, so I could go back to my primus speakers. They are decent speakers, but the primus especially the p363 is the bang for your buck winner in my opinion. Also, if you use a vertical bookshelf p163 as a center, dialogue vocals will be so crystal clear with amazing on and off axis quality. I've had the pc350 center in the past, the vertical p163 is so much better.

i think ill go ahead and get them from frys when on sale and test at home then. i dont want to buy them now at full price, then like them but have to make a trip back to frys to return them. then buy them again when on sale.

csgamer, thats interesting about the p163 being better than the center? i may get that and the center and see which one i like better. are you using a speaker and books for a stand for the p163? im not one that cares much about looks, but what about placing it under the tv horizontally.

The interesting thing is that its ironic to see salesmen who have no knowledge at all working with audio equipment. So I go to the demo room and requested the guy to test the infinity p363 which were on display. The klipsch were selling for 348/ piece and were playing some music which sounded nice. The infinities were hooked to another receiver with no inputs, so this guy connects his iphone and puts some movie on. Obviously they did not sound as great as they were connected to some crappy receiver and then goes on to say that infinity speakers are the worst ever and no wonder they are selling for 108/ piece. I had to give him a long explanation and explain him why they are sounding the way they are right now. He was still not convinced and continued with his criticism and in the end I just walked away. It is amazing how people having no knowledge about speakers work in audio departments.

I'm not surprised. The sales guy who sold me the last receiver I bought at Fry's tried to tell me how good the new Pioneer speakers are that they got in. I refused to believe him because before that he told me how good the speakers were on the new Sony 4K TV. (Yes, I know they're good for TV speakers. However, they're still TV speakers.)

I just came from my local Fry's and they had a dozen P363's in boxes in the middle of a sound room. So they are plentiful.

I ordered 3 163's for my L/C/R. I'm going to lay the center horizontally to allow for a lower TV height. Just rotate the tweeter 90 degrees. It isn't as good as the speaker being vertical, but it is an acceptable compromise in my opinion.

Yes, I'm using a makeshift layers of cardboard, power supply box, yamaha bookshelf speaker, and some books, to get my center speaker at the right height. I'll eventually have a better configuration, but as it is right now. It is the perfect height. The tweeters are the highest it can go in my setup without blocking my tv view.
Of course another p363 in the center with a wallmounted tv would have been the best setup, but I'm unwilling to have my tv that high. I care about audio quality a lot, but high viewing bugs me too much, so I went with the 2nd best option, a vertical bookshelf speaker in the same line.

I would probably go with a p163 and lay it on its side opposed to the pc351 since you will always have an option to make it vertical as well. I have a feeling a p163 on its side would best a pc351 as well. However, I haven't tested it, so I will not out right claim it to be, but less drivers to interfere with one another. Also, the drivers are closely spaced on the p163, almost point source. Horizontal speakers just really mess up the center channel for me. Those MTM designs are just terrible IMO. I don't care what anybody says now such as if somebody says, yeah, this MTM was designed differently and its fantastic. Well it may be fantastic, but put it vertically and it will sound much better.

You guys should really try it out. I'm seriously blown away by the clarity I am getting from a vertical bookshelf. I will never go back to a horizontal center ever again. Then you can come back to AVS and see others complain about dialogue clarity and know exactly why they are needlessly suffering. I was told it doesn't matter on axis, only for off axis. NOPE. On axis and Off axis is crystal clear.

Here's a side view of my center speaker.

P363 is on sale for $117 @ Fry's again this week
post #3729 of 3900
For what it's worth, I have a pair of p363 for local sale in the Dallas area. Asking $180 for the pair firm. Mint cosmetic condition and better than stock operating condition as per my mods described at http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/215759-zobsky-tweaks-infinity-primus-363-floorstander.html

Nothing wrong with them, just decluttering the house
Pm me here or on diyaudio if interested

They stopped doing this deal online some time ago

Damn, guess I'll just keep an eye out hoping they go on sale somewhere soon. I really want the P363s for my new setup.

I just replaced my Infinity Video 1 center with a PC251. Audyssey (via Onkyo 706) has set my PC251 to 50Hz and my PS28 LPF to 80Hz. Would I be better off changing the PC251 to 80Hz and the sub possibly to 120Hz? For reference, I am running R 2000.4s for my mains and QPS-1s for surround. Thanks in advance!.
I love my Infinities, have had every speaker in the series (not the subs). I recently upgraded my 153's to Revel S12's, and my PC351 to the Revel C12... WOW. If you ever get the upgrade itch, take a hard look at Revel. Next up F12's and separates.

Amazon had the P363s for $199.05 each briefly earlier, I snatched up what was listed as the last 2 they had.

Fry's often has the 143, 153 and 163 for around $49, $59 and $69. It's just not usually on the weeks when the 363 is on sale.
Looks like the P363s are also $199.99 at Crutchfield today.

I went cheap and bought Open Box P163 from Crutchfield for $80.99
post #3743 of 3900
I ordered a couple of the P153 from Amazon today since they are only $50 each. I am trying to decide on the center. Is the PC351 worth the $50 higher price than the PC251? I realize either is going to be better than the crappy sony satellites i have now but I am trying to justify spending the extra $50 or just stick with the PC251. I had contemplated buying another P153 but it would have to lay on its side
post #3744 of 3900
PC351 is definitely better than the PC251. Do you have room for a center that large? Its about 24" wide.
Width is not an issue. Guess i will just pay the extra $50 and get the PC351.

Great choice, the PC351 is a great center.

You definitely want the 351. My greatest regret was accidentally buying the 251 instead of the 351 on E-bay whilst half asleep.

Too many neophytes try to save $$ by buying a cheap center. The center speaker is probably the most important of the speakers and should preferably be in the same class as the fronts in terms of drivers.
Sounds good. I went ahead and bought the 351. Once delivered my system will be 4 - P153's, PC351 center and Klipsch RW-12D sub with a Denon 1713 running them. Should sound pretty good compared to what I have now. The cheapo Sony satellites i have now are just too small, shallow, weak and bleh. When i crank them up, you can really tell they cant handle it. Will report back with my experience and probably some pics. Thanks for the input!

Anyone pairing the primus series with bipole/dipole surround speakers? What brand are they using? I'm sad they don't make any for this series. I searched this thread and there was some mention of the beta series - if I want to search the used world.

But I'd rather buy new some dipoles/bipoles that sound good with the infinity primus. Has ANYONE paired the Primus with some bipoles/dipoles and likes them or would recommend them? There have been several other requests for recommended dipole/bipole speakers on this thread, but no answers I could find. Does someone have an answer???

Thanks!
