Any good 80" screens in scheduled soon?

I've got a 61" sammy dlp. I built a new HT and I would like to upgrade with an 80" DLP myself. I've been very happy with my 61" and have considered the projection route. But, I think I will weight the cost between an 80" (if they ever hit the street) vs. the projector.

I plan to get an HD-DVD player when the xbox 360 model comes out, at that time I know I will want a bigger screen.

Boe - I too would consider an 80" LCOS/DLP vs projector.

I could probably "build it in" curtains and all with only the screen showing. Home Theater 101 and replaceable as "newer" technology produces better product.

I've debated, reviewed and played with the PJ route for 2 years, nothing except highend comes close to what I'm seeking. If someone produces a good (nay) great 1080P RP @ 80-85", I'm betting lots of small Home Theater addicts might jump that direction. My room dimensions are 13.5 x 15 so I can't justify much over 80" +/- wide in any event.

The only caveat might be for a 2.35:1 (full movie size vs 16 x 9) that again can be had only w/FPJ High End and an Anamorphic Lens. But at what cost, for how often, for 5-8 people and more typically 1-2. I dunno bout others but cost/benefit starts to get in the way - that and the WAF !

You can forget it at your price range. The Qualia 006 was $10k. The 70xbr2 is I believe $7k. An 80 incher would be too be big depth wise for many people's taste. And if the price was too affordable, I'd be wary of the quality.

You can count me in on an 80". With plasma and LCD TVs coming closer in price of rear projections every month. Rear Projections have to drop in price and increase their size to stay competitive in this market. I would say by next year we should see bigger rear projection sets.

A salesman in Montreal told me they where going to get a 70k (can) plasma...

I am also waiting for the 80" Sony but I am concerned from this link that it might be a non-1920x1080 resolution.

I just got a 70"JVC Pro about 5 months ago. I love it but I got enough room for a 100" RPTV so why stop at 80"
BTW, FP won't work for me.

Good luck. I doubt either of those sets will be released at an affordable price if they are released at all.

Optoma is selling 80.90 and 100 inch rear projection installations in a box.
JVC demonstrated a 100 inch or so RPTV at IFA.

Now that the 70" is shipping has anyone heard anything regarding when and if a 80" Sony SXRD will come out? Is there an upcoming show where this unit is expected to be shown?

I decided against the front projection for my basement because I wanted to leave the room open where there would be quite a bit of light. Now I am looking for a large RP set. I went to Magnolia the other day to look at some large sets and I really like the Sony 70" XBR2 and the Mistubishi 73." I would really like to get a 80" but I guess 70"-73" will have to do. I looked up these TV prices on the internet and they are much chaper than in the stores. How many of you have gone this route of buying off the internet.? Also what are the differences between the three different models of the "73 Mits?

this is great news if true. I have a 65" rptv and would never get anything smaller; but the 70" just doesn't seem enough of a step-up (although it is price wise; a bit too much I think). 80" would be nice, but I'm sure I would have to hold out a few more years for a price drop...

What I understood from my visit to Optoma's home office earlier this year is that the "box" is a stud wall. As I recall you need a minimum of 36" behind the wall where you install the screen. The main mirror is massive and needs heavy duty supports.

At Optoma's home office they have it in one of their lobby walls with a good sized room on the other side. The screen swings out of the way for maintenance if you are using the minimum depth.

The cost is not much different than a front projector installation. I think entry level at the time we saw it was around $20K and that probably didn't include construction.

Of course the biggest there is 70", but perhaps it is a foreshadow of things to come!

Its possible we will see an 80" at CES. It would probably be a prototype from most vendors. Last CES Sony showed a 55 slim SXRD prototype that never made it to store shelves. Maybe this year we will see more slim models. Samsung usualy shows their new lineup at CES maybe they will have 80 to show off.

You can but a Mitsu 82" from Home Theater Store for like $5k right now. The PQ is not great and the set takes up a TON of room.

I would LOVE to have something that big but I don't have room for it and the PQ seems to suffer the larger you go. I have been looking at the 70"+ models and the Mitsu when watching SD programming is virtually unwatchable, the Sammy is not bad on DVD's but didn't see it on SD, the Sony and Toshi both seem VERY GOOD for SD programming, I did not look at a JVC, and frankly they ALL look good on HD programming, so that is really a non-issue in my view.

I did read somewhere that a 100" is on its way...I think it was JVC, but I can't remember off the top of my head.

What is holding this TV back from being developed and brought to market? Is it the brightness, the screen size, the SXRD chip? Are they waiting for a new generation chip, perhaps the 4K?

Is the slim cabinent design ready to go? Has anyone done the calculations to determine what the depth of an 80" Sony XBR2 would be given current technology and standards?
