Time Warner Cable Navigator - Page 505

We have two sets with Cisco DVR boxes. One set has a 5.1 sound system and the other set has a sound bar.

If we turn to volume all the way down, the last click turns the sound up to scream even though it goes from very soft to one more click to very very loud. The mute button works fine, the closed captioning works fine but if you take that last click down it gets as loud or louder as when the sound is up all the way.

TW came out once and had no solution. This started happening about 2 months ago.

Any help?

I agree with you. And actually I am on your side 100%! I just wish there could be more of a balance struck between the experts like you and the many people of this forum, and the general common denominator people who computer-wise can barely get their e-mail. It seems we either have people who are very knowledgeable representing maybe 5% of a population, who know what they are doing and have considerable experience in the industry. And than 95% who are content with the way things are.

Instead of TWC listening to the 5% who could really make a difference and known their s***, TWC feels they often don't need to listen to the other 95% who accept what is given to them, don't know "better" exists, or just don't care.

The 5% populace who are advanced users often have no place to go, because they are light-years above the CSR's, and there isn't any one to match their skills and experience.

It's been that way with TWC for years, "Why go for the best in winning a gold medal and being number one, when general populations are just happy that we are in the race?"

Common User: "I just want my TV and cable to work so I can watch my shows."

TWC: "Glad it's working, goodbye" (out the door.)

Jack

PS. Maybe most corporations are like that today.

Jack, two more items for the "Still Need" category:

1. Full Android integration.
2. Capability to rewind from the end-of-program screen.

I get your point, but it'll take those 40 years for TWC to get Navigator to even close to where Passport was 2 years ago. I don't know if it's the programmers fault or TWC management saying "Don't worry guys, this is good enough". However, Navigator has been in development for going on about 7 years now and still remains one of the most sub-standard DVR experiences. Even non-technical people I know have issues with it - especially speed.

The main complaints I get from customers I've installed for are:

1) Slow/Laggy operation

2) Illogical Channel Alignment - IE: Channels are too hard to find, too many duplicates, shows too many channels they don't get/want/ or care about. This is a local issue, I admit due to poor channel placement, but a simple guide filter fixes this and is one reason it's probably my top feature request above all others.

I posted a link to video where TWC is trying to make it's Signature Home look like a sexy package for advanced users. They tout an "Advanced DVR" yet the DVR's are no better than any other customer gets. It would be nice if they offered a top line 3rd party DVR for subs in high end packages, but they would have to farm it out.

I think maybe TWC programmers may be able or even want to do better, but could be hindered by management. As I stated, maybe TWC high ups are content with adding very basic features just so they can say they have them against the competition.

Ever since the small update they did a few weeks ago my 8640 has been acting very strange.

If I record a program over 2 hours in length I have trouble getting FF and RR to work. It will go to X1 speed and then start playing again within a few seconds. I have to keep hitting the button 20-30 times per commercial break. VERY annoying and tedious.

My second issue is with the box seeming to forget its storage capacity. Every few days it will not remember to adjust the percentage of available space after programs are deleted, thus causing the auto-delete function to kick in and wipe out shows that I had planned on watching. The only solution is to manually reboot.

And I'm still getting the weird remote control issue. The box seems to be sending multiple signals to the remote or vice versa because there are times when I cannot adjust the volume, etc. until it finishes communicating.

Same problem here with the FFW not working. It's like it has a mind of it's own. It jumps all over the place, stop in the middle and re-starts as well. The boxes are extremely laggy at times. I'm also getting alot of issues re-calling DVR Recordings. I get an error message that it's "Not Available At This Time".

Could you provide a little more detail:
  • What model Cisco boxes? Do you know the version of Navigator software?
  • Do you have EXACTLY the same problem with both set-ups?
  • How is the audio for the 5.1 set-up connected to the DVR? (Coax/Optical connection from DVR to 5.1 system, HDMI to TV and Coax/Optical from TV to 5.1, HDMI to 5.1 system and then HDMI from 5.1 system to TV, etc.).
  • Likewise, how is the audio for the sound-bar connected?
  • What are the remotes you are referring to: cable supplied or something else?
  • Who set-up those remotes? What device on each does the remote volume control control (DVR, sound device, etc.)?
  • What are the brands & models of the 5.1 receiver and the sound-bar?
  • What did the TW tech do? What did he tell you?

This feature is back for me with ODN 4.1.0_6 2011/04/07 11:46 on my 8300HDC although as usual it's a little buggy. Most of the time it works, but occassionaly it rewinds but leaves the end-of-program screen up over top of the video.
That is good news. I'm still at 4.0.2_4, so I have something to look forward to.

I know this feature is not a big deal, but it really annoys me when I FF a bit too far and hit the "dead end" sign.

Know what I REALLY want back from my Passport days? When I go into my DVR program listing, I want it to default to the last program I watched. I'm sick of starting at the top and constantly going looking.

TWC San Diego updated ODN to v4.1.0_7 dated 2011/08/22. Samsung OS was updated to v4.6.8. Cisco Image file was updated to v1.6.8.407.

I really liked that feature too.

speaking of start over it is supposed to be launched on the iguide platform in my area on october 19th if all goes well it was originally scheduled for by the end of September. So it seems that TWC is still planning limited support for iGuide by porting Start Over/Lookback to the regular motorola boxes as well as adding caller id on tv on the regular motorola boxes. TWC has already launched Start Over/Lookback and caller id on tv on the DCX-M multiroom DVRs and DCX-M client boxes. Is the HD options menu in navigator part of ODN 4.1.0_7 if so North Texas has that version as someone mentioned that menu just popped up on DCX3200mP2's in North Texas last wednesday?

Yes the HD settings option is a part of ODN v4.1.0_7 and ODN v4.1.0_6.

I still have the older iGuide boxes which I think are better than the navigator boxes because of the advanced add ons in search and the watch in HD buttons as well as being able to change guide color, as well as having manual recordings. I can live without channel logos.

It is likely that my TWC division got 4.1.0_7 as we got it last week.

Also the DCX multiroom boxes are running DOCSIS Set-top Gateway for OOB instead of the legacy OOB carrier so we may have a special 4.x version or even a 5.x version of ODN.

Central New York - Navigator Update in progress!!!!

On a Navigator note: I just did an install tonight and the customer had a 4240HDC - MY LORD, it was horrible. 2 second channel changes, lag like crazy with any menu function and sometimes the box would just go crazy flipping through channels at random. The customer has had Time Warner out 3 times and two box swaps with no results... needless to say they hate Navigator.

Update: Nevermind - if they slipstreamed something it's a hidden update. Nothing worthwhile although I'm now at ODN Version 5.0.0_6 - Geez, as I'm typing this the box went into another reboot cycle. This is usually when TWC drops updates on our division. I'll give it a run through tomorrow and see if it's anything good or if my box is just flaking out. My other 8642 is doing nothing at this time.

Perhaps the programming info on shows and movies are slightly longer descripted !!! Just a guess ....Got the update at 3 am while trying to watch Hardcore Pawn took like 35 minutes at that point i went to bed after it updated to 5.0.0_6 !!!

I found out that Guide Transparency is activated at the head end like Caller ID on TV. You should see it in Navigator ODN settings within 24-48 hours of the update to ODN 4.1 or higher. You must be running ODN Navigator and your division must be at 4.1 or above to activate this setting.

Other features with the ODN update: (Navigator 4.1+ Higher)

1.) Settings for Start Over/Lookback are now Savable
2.) Channel Banner has Embedded Menus
3.) High Definition has it's own settings in settings (moved from Display)
4.) 4x FF
5.) Whole House DVR clients can now delete a show on any box in the home.
6.) DVR Compensation: Controls amount of jump back coming out of FF/REW to play to compensate for customer reaction time. Settings are Normal (Default), More, Less, or Off.
7.) Improved Speed, HDMI, and other bug fixes.

Same here only 3x and no transparency or in display settings. I can now delete shows on any of my whole home dvr boxes regardless of where they were recorded.

I'm considering go to WH-DVR with BHN Orlando. In terms of WH-DVR in general for TWC/BHN, are the MoCA enabled Cisco boxes used exclusively, or is there another brand in the mix? I have an 8640HDC which I like, so I'm trying to determine if it's alock for getting an 8642HDC with WH-DVR.

Additionally, I'm only lookign at 1 DVR + 1 remote room regular box. When you throw a remote room in the mix that is accessing the main DVR, what limitations does it pose in terms of # of active recordings and # of DVR recordings playing back and watching live TV?

I have the 8642hdc in my WH and the boxes have 500GB and 2 tuners so you could double it if you went to both dvrs
post #15149 of 18035
I don't know if this helps or not,

But when we got the ODN 4.0.06 update, it also showed 3x FF at a maximum speed. For some reason, unrelated to this, I had to do a manual reboot and the 4x FF showed up. Very strange. We have had this build for at least three months, and it does seem to be very stable since that time.

Jack

PS. It should be noted that VOD only goes 3x FF.

Cisco has 8700's being tested in the labs. Don't know if employees are testing or not. Seems that will be the next phase for them. I don't have box specs, or model numbers for the newest Samsungs in testing.
