I am on the Buffalo system. My buddy who lives 3 miles from me down the street is on the Rochester system.

Does anybody know if the black guide will be 16x9???

Who all is getting that 16x9 guide? Is it ever voming to old 8300HD in STNY?

It can't as the 8300 is incapable of displaying a 16x9 Guide. It will likely be limited to late model ODN boxes. 4600/8600 series and newer.

Samsung and Motorola DCX boxes are capable of a 16:9 UI.

The newer black guide will be forced to 4x3 on the older boxes with likely only 90 minutes of Time Grid, because the older boxes can't do HD guides. Only the Ciscos Samsungs, and new Motorola boxes, can do a true 16x9 HD guide.

Which probably means that the "stretched" guide on the Samsungs will be true HD capable with the new GUI, and the Cisco's that currently only show Navigator's Time Grid at 4x3, will go to a true HD 16x9 non-stretched format.

I wonder if they may take the older boxes that can only do 4x3 graphics and stretch the new guide for them? My guess is no.

You are forgetting the DCX3400M/DCX3510, and DCX3200Mp2/p3 boxes that run navigator on Motorola based system and a few Cisco systems one I know of is Austin Texas. My Motorola market has started giving out the newest samsung's and Cisco's as well. So my market has 3 different brands with ODN 5.0 running in ADSG mode: Motorola, Cisco, Samsung.

I can't say this was true for me. In the 5 years I ran SARA I recall maybe forcing a reboot one time. It ran flawlessly on its own versus the current incarnation of Navigator which requires bi-weekly reboots to cure speed issues. As I always stated, SARA may be butt ugly, but rock solid. I recall maybe missing two recordings total with it and one was likely a power outage while I was out of town. Navigator missed 5 shows in one week one time. I'm very optimistic that this next generation of Navigator will fix or at least vastly improve upon the current state of the software.

That's right! New Motorolla's too should (hopefully get the Widescreen Guide.) Wisconsin does not give out the Motorola boxes.

They didn't put a Guide Transparency feature in your settings did they? I have only seen this for the ODN boxes. I leave it off. One guy I know turned on the Guide Transparency, didn't like it, and two days later, went to turn it off, but it wasn't in Settings anymore! The Guide Transparency, from what I understand is activated at the head-end.

Hey for those with MDN boxes up to MDN 3.0 or higher, what do you all think that little (Dev) means in Diagnositcs? I know it's Development, but developing what? And why is it only on MDN?

Oh well that sucks.. too bad you need all that intelligent home BS to get a better DVR here. I'll stick with my 1.15 terabyte 8300HD and a 4x3 guide I guess.

Anybody have this problem? I'm TWC San Diego, just upgraded to ODN 5.1.0_6.

I noticed a bad thing since the upgrade to V5. When you're in the guide and hit a number and press the right arrow (to advance that number of days), the guide changes but the date does not. It takes a while for it to catch up, so you're never sure what day you're looking at in the guide, unless you know what programming is on what day. This didn't happen in the prior version.

Remember how SARA let you hightlight the DAY/DATE box and scroll to the Day/Date you wanted? I'm hopeful that the next incarnation of Navigator makes sweeping changes.

It's like you got to give those clowns MORE MONEY to get the "better DVR" (Multi-room, Signature Home, Cloud-Based Features.) Not everyone can afford ANOTHER $10-$20 a month just to get a "better" box.

What's your box model, Humdinger? I heard there are some box models that have this bug and others do not. I have ODN 5.1.06, on the SA-8300HDC and at least from what I can tell, the day changes like it always did.

Mine is the Cisco 8640, less than 2 years old.

I will report this on my update Jack.

My 8640 started doing it with 5.0 and still does with 5.1. There was brief discussion of it here a little while ago.

I was wondering if the software diagnostics menu works on this box and how do you access it?

Also how do you do the same for the 8642HDC because someone I know posted over at broadband reports a while back that they could not get into the software diagnostics menu with ODN 5.0? Anyone with ODN 5.0 able to get into the software diagnostics menu on either a 8642HDC or 8742HDC?

You can get into the basic Diag Screen by Pressing the SELECT button (and holding) until the MAIL ICON Blinks, then press ARROW DOWN. If you want the Advanced Service Menu, do the same thing except press the UP ARROW when the MAIL ICON Blinks.

On a side note: TWC is KILLING me with Navigator. Again I get a call back from an install I did complaining how it's missing recordings, doesn't work right etc. All I can do is tell him to reboot and pray. It may come to the point where I tell him to look at other options. I hope to hell TWC rolls out this new guide quick and that it WORKS!

What did they mean by "doesn't work right?" And as for the missed recordings, I'd be curious to know whether the person just failed to resolve a conflict, or if it's some other reason. What does it say about the missed recordings in the recording log?

What is Navigator's Conflict Resolution Sequence Suppose to be?

Years ago, I or someone else asked this, and I can't remember the answer. Specifically, what is it's programmed order for conflict resolution and is this different for MDN/ODN?

In the list below, if two or more shows conflict for the same recorded time slot, what is Navigator's sequence of conflict resolution?

I thought it went something like this: (#1 is highest priority.)

1.) PPV or Video on Demand Purchased Event.
2.) PPV or VOD Movie
3.) One Time Recorded Series. (Search for instances of another time)
4.) Multiple Listings of the Same Series. (Search for instances of another) time
5.) If no other time available, record a series over an individual program
6.) Record individual program

Don't quote me on this priority list, however!

He's not getting conflict messages and has to babysit the DVR by checking the guide to make sure it's recording.He's also getting bumped out of shows when a recording starts which causes the playbacked show he was watching to restart. I went through this before. Hopefully a reboot fixes the issues. Lets just say after years of Tivo, he's VERY unhappy with Navigator. I guarantee if Tivo cuts a deal with TWC like they did with Comcast, he'll be back with Tivo in a second. I'm just sick of being the go between for TWC's piss poor guide. I really hope the dev team fixes the issues quickly!

What kind of deal are you referring to? Would it mean the end of tuning adapters? I don't really care about VOD, but being able to use Tivo reliably on TWC would be a huge win. Of course, being able to use Navigator on TWC would also be a huge win. I am on DirecTV currently because of the issues you describe above with Navigator and an inability to get Tivos to work well with TAs, but I'd rather have cable for the signal reliability, and to be honest the HR24s I have from DirecTV are just OK. I was going to switch to the new DirecTivos, but I might put that off if there is any chance that I might soon be able to use Tivos on TWC without TAs.

It was a combination for this particular person of wanting PPV access and reliable performance without a TA. Problem is he has no real SDV issues now and can order his PPV's, but is unhappy with the overall performance of the box. If Time Warner ditches SDV and makes a deal for VOD access as Comcast did, you might see an uptick in Tivo sales. That or if TWC fixes Navigator and gets it running like it should to the point where people don't need to look at other options.

My situation is exactly the same re: the reliability issues (without the TiVo/TA involvement)


Not sure if you have trees in the way but I've been very pleasantly surprised at the uptime. I've lost signal for a few minutes during a downpour once or twice, but that's it.


That hasn't been my experience - mine have been great. When compared to my 8300HDC, it's like comparing a Rolls Royce to a pinewood derby car with a missing wheel.


I considered doing the same, but one limitation stopped me - from the DirecTV site: "The TiVo HD DVR from DIRECTV is not compatible with DIRECTV Whole-Home DVR service..."

During the stormy season, I routinely lose signal during prime time. This is more of an issue for the wife, who likes to watch live reality shows like Big Brother, than me. Most of the time it is fine though.


Yes, compared to the SA boxes I have tried, the HR24 is great. Compared to Tivos, however, I find many of the interface quirks to be annoying (6 button presses to get to the To Do list, even more to the Series Manager), and it can be sluggish at times. It is better than most, but not as good as it could be. That said, it has come a long way.


Whole Home is nice, but not critical for my wife and me. If you rely on it, then the THR22 is not a good choice.

Sounds like any movement with Tivo and TWC is probably far off, and TWC is probably unlikely to abandon SDV.

Now, if only Navigator was better. I tried it a couple of years ago, but I had problems with it cutting off in the middle of recordings. Is that still an issue?

How does one do a warm reboot on the 8742. On older boxes I could press and hold the power button and depending what state the box was in it would either bring up diagnostics or reboot. Now with the 8742, the power button only ever brings up the diagnostics. So, I'm looking for what the new reliable method is.
