KEF Owners Thread - Page 15

Well today I picked up the following KEF speakers at southern A&B Sound Store in Calgary. The fellows at the store were very helpful and allowed me to audition the speakers until I felt content with what I had chosen. Kudos to Kevin. . I'll be back no doubt to pick up other things as time marches on. The thing I liked about this store was that there was no pressure to pick this item or that item. They were content to let me wander around and ask questions when I had them, they were absolutely great.

Fronts = 2 x iQ9
Centre = 1 x iQ6c
Rears = 2 x iQ1 (They didn't have any Apple wood iQ3 speakers in stock so I'll try the iQ1 pair for the next month and see how they do. The store told me if I wanted to change to let them know and they'll get the iQ3 set in for me.

Sub = 1 Velodyne VRP 1200 (I'm not sure if I'll stick with this. I wouldn't mind having a small sub as the 1200 looks huge in my small 14' x 10' space. My wife's first comment was What the hell is that! .

I choose Apple wood as the colour of choice for my speakers. Just wanted to say thanks very much "sivadselim", your help and suggestions is always greatly appreciated. These speakers look absolutely beautiful. I didn't realize it until I got home, but the Apple wood is the same colour as the other furniture we got in our little home theatre room.

My set is the Dark Apple finish as well, they look terrific don't they?
Someday I may get a set of iQ3s to use in a 7.1 setup, and my Elemental Design A5-350 sub is on order, but for now I'm sure I'll be pretty happy with my KEFs for many years.
I will have to agree the Dark Apple looks amazing! I ordered my KEF surrounds yesterday and should get them any day now..

IQ9's up front
IQ6c Center Channel
IQ5's rears

All I'll have to do now is to decide what sub to combine with them and enjoy
post #426 of 6059
Here's a quick question: I have the KEF 3005s. Is there any advantage to laying the HTB2 sub on its side rather than stand it up?

Dark Apple is the best color choice i think they look great with my home theater. The more you use them the better they sound so there is a break in period needed in my opinion.
I Brought mine in May 07 without listening to them first because I could not find anybody that had these in the Tampa , fl area. I just read reviews on them. So I was was a little nervous ordering these sight unseen, but have not been disappointed since gettting them. I set them up witth my velodyne 4000R subwoofer , tweaked everthing and they sound great! Enjoy

I am debating between replacing my current fronts and center with the Kef 201 and 202c. My current Klipsch fronts suck, no question, but my current Focal CC908 is very nice. So here is my question, has anyone had the opportunity to hear both the Focal Profile 908 and the Kef 201/202, and if so, did you feel either had any obvious advantages? Unfortunately there is nowhere in the Atlanta area that carries the Kef, so I'm in the difficult position of not being able to listen to both.

I don't think too many people own those, pnbwoman.

I have installed a few pairs... they are quite nice... a little bright for my taste, but do exactly what they say you get a great 5 channel image from the 2 speakers, i think its a great set of speakers from KEF! The floor standers are better than the stand mount.

Help me.
I purchased the KEF 3000s a week ago for use with a Denon 2807. I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to home theatre, but i admit the complexity of the denon receiver is a bit intimidating. I'm having trouble getting any bass out of the KEF system. I have read on the forums about adjusting the crossover frequency (some day i plan on learning what that is). Good news is i know how to do that... but it didn't make any noticeable adjustments to the bass being output. I know it's a setting issues... because when i do a test tone, you hear the subwoofer really crank out the bass. WHen watching a dvd however, there's basically no bass. Anyone have any advice on what i might be missing here?
You don't have the setting correct in the speaker setup. Have you ran the self eq yet.
i ran the self eq (audyssey?)... if i look at the speaker settings, the subwoofer is set to -3.5dbs? does that sounds right? i can manually change that when doing the test tones... but i don't think that changes the settings. how would i do that?
Go to manual setup and then speaker setup and see how it is set.

The receiver's subwoofer trim level setting is sort of meaningless on its own as it will change if you change the volume setting on the subwoofer itself. But -3.5dB is an OK setting.

To what size does your receiver set your speakers when you run Audyssey, LARGE or SMALL?

How did you connect the subwoofer to the receiver, exactly?
with respect to the audyssey setting of my sub, I'm at work now (if you can call this working)...so not sure. I will check from home and post. i know the speakers are set to small, but not 100% sure on the sub. I'm not sure if you're familiar with KEF sub, but there is no volume on it... i think there are only 3 or 4 buttons... on/off, auto/manual setting, and then a bass +3 or +6. that's it. The sub is connected to the denon via a monster cable (RCA input?). is there a way to set volume from denon. this is so frustrating... i read the KEF reviews talking about the powerful sub. so i know it's there... just need to configure this darn thing right!

OIC.

Well, provided you ran Audyssey correctly, the subwoofer level that the receiver set should be correct. Not sure what the sub's "bass +3 or +6" setting was when you ran Audyssey, but if you change that setting, theoretically, the Audyssey setting in the receiver for your sub's level should change accordingly. So, if Audyssey sets your receiver's sub level to "-3.5dB" when the KEF's own level is set to "0", Audyssey should set your receiver's sub level to "-6.5dB" if you set the KEF's level to +3 and "-9.5" if you set the KEF's level to +6. So, it's all relative.

Make sure that Audyssey is setting all your speakers to SMALL. What crossover setting does Audyssey set? What are you using to test the bass output?

FWIW, this Sunday, members of the Los Angeles Audio-Video Association (LAAVA) are being loaned a pair of Kef 201/2's (courtesy of the Home Theater Doctor in Redondo Beach) for demo in my home in Manhattan Beach, CA, along with other speakers.

If you are interested in a listen, send me a PM.

Home Theater Doctor http://hometheaterdoctor.com is a great shop, they trust me, and I have referred people to them. They also loaned us the Usher Be-718.

My amp is ICEpower based with 500wpc, Sherwood/Newcastle P-965...an Oppo 970 and Sonos both connected digitally.

I played with the 201/2s tonight...very nice. I'm very curious what the others will think.

I have a Velodyne VRP 1200 sub and I'm not particularly happy with it and it's somewhat larger then the wife would like to see. I was thinking of going with two KEF PSW 2500. Does anyone here have the 2500 sub and what are your thoughts thus far. Thanks in advance for any thoughts you can provide.

I also took a peek at the Totem Storm & some other Velodynes (mini vee 8" was nice and small). They're both compact unobtrusive subs that take up minimal amounts of floor space, but they go for $1000.00 up here. I do like the looks of the KEF 2500 though.

Lucky you! That looks like a really nice, high-end shop. Do they have a large showroom?

Me, too. Please let us know what the consensus is. Curious about the new tweeter.

The low-end f3 on that sub is only 33Hz. I'm sure it is a great sub for music, but it may be lacking a bit in the HT department.

It is not very large. One listening room that is around 20x15, a theater room of about the same size, and a floor space that is maybe 20x20.

2nd Room KEF inwalls

I am just putting together my home theater. I decided to put my available dollars into the video side of the components first, like the latest Samsung 4681 1080P with 100,000 cr and LED backlighting $4000, an Onkyo 875 receiver $1350, with the latest Reon VX chip for video processing and only have $2000, maybe $2500 left (if I secretly borrow from my wife's emergency hidden stash) left for a speaker system.

I am really considering the 5005.2 sytem which comes with 4 speakers and the cool looking subwoofer a room 10' x 16". I can get this for about $1925 right now. Or two other (self-acclaimed audiophiles) recommended the options below:

What do you guys recommend?

1) Go with the 5005.2 system
2) Go with the 5005.2 speakers only and either an SVS or HSU subwoofer (one guy said its a big difference with these subwoofers bec these companies are know for their subwoofers.
3) Go with just two KEF front speakers and/or what else/ would you recommend ---- for $2000? and what if I want to spend $2500?

If I go with 3, I would probably have to wait a year to get add'l speakers, and I'm not sure if I want to wait for the surround sound experience.

thanks for any input.

thanks for the feedback pal1982, i am going to give myself an audition at an authorized kef dealer which is about 20 miles from my home. after that i will give others my opinion or maybe better yet i will pick one up myself. thanks again.
Well there are a lot of what Ifs... in that questions. For what they are the 5005.2 system is verygood and for your size of room they will sound great. They sub not only looks good but sound good as well. Just make sure you have some bass management controls in your receiver. On the sub there is no volume control just a gain setting for 0db, 3db, 6db.

All and all for your room I think you will be happy

Q9s? Is that what you meant to say? Q9c center channel speakers? Or did you mean iQ9s?

If you meant iQ9s, that must sound awesome. What did you run for surrounds prior to the iQ9s? Do you ever miss the hypertweeter on the surrounds?
