Thanks!

Where do they sell those calibration disks and are very hard to use?

Also I'm looking for a HDMI Stereo/Home Theatre in a box and I am leaning towards a Panasonic SCHT940S I found, But I'm not sure if it is good enough for the TV?

It has alot of what I want because it will replace my current stereo and dvd with only one unit, I figure with that and my Bell HD PVR I will be set!

Any opinions on the Panasonic SCHT940S as a good choice for this TV?

No they're really not hard to use. I limit my use to the adjustment of the contrast, brightness, sharpness and colors. It has a lot more on it including calibrating your sound system. Circuit City has them:

http://entertainment.circuitcity.com...did=IMG5867DVD

As for the sound system, I'm afraid I've not heard that particular system so I don't have an opinion on it.

I adjusted my settings off the Avia disc, but did it in the early morning light so it wasn't a dark room. They are
as follows:

for HD and DVD:

contrast - 80
brightness - 61
color - 46
tint +13
sharpness - 23

dynamic contrast - high
DNR - off
MPEG NR - off
Color temp - medium
vertical edge - off
lamp high
color mngt:
red - saturation -7
green - 0
blue - 0

for cable I use this:

dynamic contrast - high
cableclear - high
MPEG NR - middle
color temp - medium
lamp - high
vertical edge - middle

color mngt:
red saturation -6
green sat - 0
blue sat - 0

Toshiba is notorious for having very cool temperatures. Some sources look better than others and most look acceptable colorwise. A good calibration will do the job on the greyscale and colors so I'm not worried about it. What stands out in this TV is the low noise floor and sharp, detailed picture. It's simply outstanding. Colors can be corrected, video processing cannot. I'm completely satisfied with the processing in this set. I've watched a lot of football on different signals (480i, 1080i, 720p) and have not seen any blurring, artifacting or picture breakup. SSE is a non-issue at 10' and hardly an issue closer than that.

Based on your settings I came up with this:

for HD and DVD:

contrast - 85
brightness - 55
color - 36
tint +13
sharpness - 0
dynamic contrast - med
DNR - off
MPEG NR - off
Color temp - medium
vertical edge - off
lamp high
color mngt:
red - saturation -10
green +5
blue +10
yellow +5

I push blue mainly because dynamic contrast darkens it...

The settings above are not technical but please my eye

Intrestingly enough I increased my blue, green and yellow settings as well yesterday. All by +3.

Color temp warm and dynamic contrast always off, it crushes blacks and lamp low.

Any ideas on another thread here I can ask advice on my stereo selection for this TV?

Also are HD Component connections the best for hooking my PS2 to the TV??

Thanks again!!

Does anyone know about the bulb life on the 72MX196 as compared to the
72MX195? I have the 195, and the viewing experience goes like this:

<2 months after purchase>

Wow that's an incredible picture isn't it honey? I'm so glad we chose this...
POP! Dead bulb.

Thank goodness this set is working well now. What bad luck we must have
had before. Let's checkout this awesome movie. I've never seen detail like
that before! POP! Dead bulb.

<2 months later>

2 in a row must have been REALLY unlucky. Let's try that new xbox360
game. POP! Dead bulb.

The tech told me that many many toshiba 195 DLP owners are experiencing these
problems, and toshiba doesn't really know what to do about it. They're
sending out new bulbs like candy on halloween, but they can't fix the root cause.
Is it the bulb manufacturing process? Is it the light engine? Is it something else
in the set?

Now to be fair, the tech told me he hadn't heard of any problems with the 196
yet. I hate to sound so pessimistic, but this set took a fair bit of coin out of my
pocket. I'm going to dump the 195. The question is, do I move up to the 196
and risk having the same issues, or switch to SXRD or something else?

Does anyone have any info on 196 bulb life?

Well that's not good. I haven't researched that issue. I guess all I can do is wait and see.

I had heard from a few places now that the 195 problem was from bad sockets, not the bulbs themselves...

I'm not familiar with PS2. My son has his x-box hooked up to our 50MH66 via component and it's really a nice picture.

I have an Onkyo HT-S780 system hooked up to that TV and I think it's a great sounding system for the money. You'll need to add a DVD player, though. Here's the new model:

Can anyone comment on the differences between the 72MX196 and the 72MH196? I've read the brochures, but I'm still torn on which way to go.

Also, How do these sets compare to plasma in terms of SD, DVD, & HD? Any comments would be invaluable.

Sorry bslep to introduce you to the problem. It is really too bad b/c otherwise the
MX195 is a beautiful set. My fingers are crossed for the 196 owners. Here is the official thread on the MX195.
Unfortunately it is filled with bulb issues:

and here's a thread specifically about lamp failures on these sets:

How bad is the rainbow effect on these sets? How do they compare with Mitsubishi & Samsung?

How do the viewing angles compare as well?

Has anyone compared the different brands over 70 inches?

Thanks for your input Zissou.

I read that warm color temp is better (closer to 6500ka yet still too cool?) But I like medium also.

I don't like to turn dynamic contrast completely off with this TV cause I feel it makes the picture look way too flat. I put it on low or med depending on what I'm watching to make contrast a little more punchy and I barely loose any details. I don't mind having a little black crush (if any) if it gives me better looking overall pic.

My previous (super bright) 60" Sony LCD was always on low lamp cause it was way too bright. However with the 72" Tosh I feel low light is a little too dim (maybe due to its size?). Still, I sometimes put the set on low light while watching HD broadcast or a really bright DVD but generally, I'll go for high lamp cause it looks more pleasant to my eye (especially with my 360).

All the settings above are trials for now. Nothing fixed. All I can say is that I reeeally enjoy my new Toshiba has it gives me lots of options and big satisfaction!

If you can see them you'll see them. I do, especially with my PC (hooked to the TV) but it doesn't bother me as I don't see them often enough (most of the time it's when I suddenly turn my head away from the screen. Even when I watched Sin City I had to "look" for RBE to see them.

I have set my DC to low after doing a quick THX test, its true anything higher than the low setting will crush blacks. even on low it will ever so slightly crush black but the added detail it adds with some sources is enough for me to keep it on low.

All other edge enhancement has been shut off and sharpness down to 20.

ACK!!! Please help me....

I hooked my PS2 up to the TV both with it's regular cables and with the component cables, both looked crappy, I tried turning the Game Mode ON inside the TV itself and that didn't help...Any other PS2 players out there with any ideas on the best setup for this?

Also I bought an upconverting DVD player today, plugged it in and played a dvd, it only looked OK, It is running through an HDMI wire and yet the TV shows the signal as 480p on the screen while playing the DVD, How do I get it to play at 1080i/1080p?

It only looks passable right now, not nearly as good as I'd hoped, so far I'm not impressed with the TV at all...But I really want to be.....

HELP!!!

Most PS2 games being low res (with stair stepped looking image) will probably not look good on a TV this big no mather what you do. PS3 will be muuuch better!

Your DVD player probably has a setting to output at 1080i or 720p... or maybe an HDMI option you can activate?

The fastest way to see the image quality your TV can do right now (other than HD-DVD) is to invite friend that has a xbox360 and set it too 1080i through component cables to your TV. Default (out of the box) settings of my 72MX196 were also only average. You'll have to fool around with picture settings to enhance your TV image.

I went into the menu for the DVD and it had HDMI on/off I put it to ON...But nowhere else in the TV or DVD player settings do I see an option to change from my 480i and 480p signals (Which is all I'm getting)

I don't have any friends who use XBOX they are all playstation lovers lol...

When I set my PS2 up on my TV through my component cables I go inside the PS2 settings and try different things to get the best picture...Any ideas on the best settings....?

Should it be at RGB when hooked up via component cables...??

Thanks!!!

Hi noangelx. Which DVD player? There must be a setting somewhere in the DVD player to activate this feature. The TV will autodetect whatever source resolution it is receiving. If the TV is showing 480i or 480p, the DVD player is the culprit.

Wow, 100 contrast? Must be for daytime viewing? I actually lowered my contrast to 65 and lowered the dynamic contrast to middle. Thankfully, these are temporary settings as I just got on Eliab's calibration tour. I am scheduled to have the TV calibrated on October 19th. Can't wait!

Depending upon the quality of your DVD player you may want to just set the output at 480i and let the TV upconvert the signal to 1080P (it's native resolution). I'm gonna bet that the video processing in the TV is better than that of the DVD player. Everything is relative. As good as the video processing is in the TV, if you give it a poor signal, you'll not get good results. BTW, if you set the DVD player to progressive scan, it's a 480p signal. Interlaced is 480i. Maybe your player has a switch on the outside that does this rather than in a menu?

Yep, I feel anything lower than 90 makes the image look washed out especially on low lamp.

I'm looking foward to read about Eliabs settings!

Anyways... maybe my gaming nature has spoiled my judgment!

One thing for sure I'm really glad I bought this TV!

LOL I run a game store that is like EB games, we have 5 locations, so I guess if I really wanted to I could locate an XBOX 360...I may have to give it a shot!

I'd love to try GT4 at 1080i, But I can't figure out where to switch to 1080i...? When I plug in the PS2 and turn a game on...(Anygame) I get only 480 showing as my resolution.... How do I switch it to 1080???

OK so I found the setting in my DVD player to switch to 1080i for dvds!!! It looks much better!! One thing though, The TV now says 1080i on it when on dvds...Does the TV ever say 1080p? Since it isn't a true 1080p but a wobulated 1080p? Or do we just assume it is upconverting to 1080p while it says 1080i?

The DVD player is the only place so far that I can find to choose resolution...I can't find anywhere to change the resolution in the TV itself....

My DVD is a panasonic, hooked up through HDMI that does upconverting...

Hi! I got the DVD to play 1080i finally! Looks much better!!
Will it ever show as 1080p on the TV though??? lol
